Vocabulary becomes more demanding in the middle years of secondary school because the learner is no longer dealing only with unfamiliar objects, actions and descriptive words. The difficult words increasingly carry relationships between ideas. A student must recognise evidence, qualification, cause, contrast, implication, perspective, degree, reliability, uncertainty and judgement. The challenge is therefore not simply to know more words. It is to control words well enough that reading becomes faster, writing becomes more exact, discussion becomes more thoughtful and learning can move across subjects.
This guide is built for Secondary 2 students and for learners at a broadly comparable stage of early-adolescent or middle-school education around the world. School systems do not line up perfectly: a Secondary 2 learner in one country is not automatically identical to a Grade 8 or Year 8 learner elsewhere. The useful overlap is developmental. Around this stage, texts become denser, subject language becomes more abstract, questions demand more inference, and students are expected to explain not only what they know but how ideas connect.
The list therefore has a specific job. It is not a collection of rare words chosen to make a student sound impressive. It is not an official syllabus and should not be treated as a prescribed examination list. It is a curated set of high-utility academic words that recur in reading, explanation, argument, data, science, humanities, classroom discussion and independent learning. The words are deliberately useful across domains. A learner who controls relevant, infer, criterion, variable, significant, qualify and corroborate gains tools for thinking as well as vocabulary for English.
The article also separates breadth from depth. Breadth asks how many words a learner can recognise. Depth asks what the learner can actually do with each word. Can the student explain it in ordinary language? Distinguish it from a neighbour? Use its common collocations? Move between noun, verb, adjective and adverb forms where the family permits? Match the register? Retrieve it without seeing the list? Transfer it into another subject or a new writing task? Secondary 2 is an excellent stage to turn vocabulary from a collection into a working system.

Why High-Utility Academic Vocabulary Matters at Secondary 2
A high-utility word earns its place because it can solve many language problems. Consider factor. In Science, a factor may affect the outcome of an experiment. In Geography, several factors may influence migration. In History, a writer may weigh political and economic factors. In English, a student may identify the factors shaping a character’s decision. The word is not tied to one chapter. It travels. That ability to travel is why academic vocabulary gives unusually good returns on study time.
The same is true of verbs such as analyse, interpret, evaluate, justify and substantiate. They appear in questions, rubrics, feedback and model answers because they describe operations the learner must perform. Knowing the dictionary definition is useful but insufficient. A student who sees evaluate and merely describes has not understood the operation. A student who sees justify and restates an opinion has not supplied the required reason or evidence. Academic vocabulary is therefore partly a language system and partly an instruction system for thought.
Current middle-school vocabulary resources often foreground phrases such as high-frequency, high-utility, academic vocabulary and words students should know. Those title patterns are useful because they point to a genuine educational distinction: priority matters. A learner could spend an hour memorising ten obscure adjectives encountered once in a novel, or spend the same hour gaining control of ten words that reappear across school for years. This guide chooses the second path.
Priority does not mean that every student must learn the same 100 words in the same order. A learner who already controls context and contrast should move quickly through them and invest more effort in a weaker word such as corroborate or qualify. Another learner may recognise variable in Mathematics but not realise that it can also describe something that changes in an investigation. Vocabulary learning should be diagnostic. Study effort follows the gap, not the page number.
What It Means to Know a Word
Word knowledge is layered. The first layer is recognition: you have seen the word before. The second is a rough central meaning. The third is boundary: you know what the word does not mean and how it differs from nearby words. The fourth is behaviour: you know common grammar and collocations. The fifth is family: you can connect forms such as analyse, analysis, analytical and analytically. The sixth is register and stance: you know whether the word is neutral, formal, technical, evaluative or tentative. The seventh is retrieval: the word can come back without the list in front of you. The eighth is transfer: you can use it correctly in a new task.
This is why memorising a definition can create a false sense of mastery. A student may define significant as important, yet misuse it whenever something is merely large. In statistics, significant can carry a technical meaning. In ordinary academic prose, a significant factor is an important or meaningful factor. In a sentence such as “the temperature rose significantly,” the adverb describes a notable degree of change. The learner needs context, grammatical role and domain sensitivity, not only a one-line gloss.
Depth also protects writing from the thesaurus trap. Near-synonyms are rarely perfect substitutes. Credible is not identical to true. Objective is not identical to neutral. Consequence is not identical to result in every context. Infer describes what a reader or thinker concludes from evidence; imply describes what a speaker, writer, sign or set of facts suggests without stating directly. When these boundaries become visible, vocabulary begins improving reasoning rather than decorating sentences.
For each word in this guide, use six questions. What does it mean in plain English? What is one important boundary or near-neighbour? What words naturally occur beside it? What other useful forms belong to the same family? What would a correct Secondary 2 sentence look like? Where else could the word travel? A word that survives all six questions is much closer to active ownership.

The clusters are organisational tools rather than rigid boxes. A word can belong to several. Evidence is central to reasoning but also to Science and History. Perspective matters in literature, media literacy and social understanding. Variable is technical in Mathematics and Science but also useful in ordinary reasoning. The goal is not to memorise ten isolated categories. The goal is to build a network in which one word can activate several kinds of thinking.
Words 1–10: Reasoning and Evidence
1. Analyse means to examine something carefully by separating it into parts, relationships or features so that its structure becomes clearer. The important boundary is between analysing and merely describing. Description tells what is present; analysis explains how parts work, relate or matter. Common collocations include analyse the data, analyse a passage, analyse the causes and analyse the evidence. Useful family members are analysis, analytical and analytically. Example: “Iona analysed the paragraph by separating the writer’s claim, evidence and assumption.” Transfer test: use the word once in English, once in Science and once in Humanities. If the operation remains the same across all three contexts, the word is becoming portable.
2. Infer means to reach a conclusion from clues, evidence or known facts rather than from a direct statement. Do not confuse infer with imply. The reader infers; the text, speaker or evidence implies. Common patterns include infer from the evidence, infer that, reasonable inference and infer meaning from context. Family members include inference and inferential. Example: “From the repeated references to locked doors, Maren inferred that the setting was designed to feel restrictive.” A good inference must be anchored. Ask, “Which clue earns this conclusion?” If no clue can be pointed to, the response may be a guess rather than an inference.
3. Evaluate means to judge quality, importance, effectiveness or strength using stated or implied criteria. Evaluation is more than giving an opinion. The learner needs a basis for judgement. Common collocations include evaluate the effectiveness, evaluate the evidence, evaluate the impact and evaluate against criteria. Family forms include evaluation and evaluative. Example: “Leonie evaluated the revision plan by checking whether it improved recall, accuracy and speed.” The boundary with analyse matters: analysis can explain how something works without deciding how good it is; evaluation adds a judgement. A useful sentence frame is: “This is effective to the extent that ___ because ___, although ___ limits the result.”
4. Justify means to give adequate reasons, evidence or principles showing why a claim, choice or action is defensible. It is stronger than simply explain because justification must answer “Why is this choice warranted?” Common collocations include justify a decision, justify the claim, justify your answer and well-justified conclusion. Family members include justification and justifiable. Example: “The student justified the recommendation by comparing cost, safety and long-term benefit.” A weak justification repeats the claim in different words. A strong one supplies a reason that could persuade a sceptical reader. Transfer practice: justify one interpretation of a story, one step in a Mathematics solution and one conclusion from a Science investigation.
5. Evidence is information that supports, challenges or helps establish a claim. Evidence is not automatically proof. A single example may support an idea without making it certain. Common collocations include strong evidence, supporting evidence, direct evidence, evidence suggests and lack of evidence. Related forms include evident and evidently, though these do not replace the noun in most academic sentences. Example: “Iona separated the writer’s opinion from the evidence used to support it.” Depth test: for any claim, identify what would count as relevant evidence and what would not. This forces the learner to connect the word to standards of relevance, source quality and strength.
6. Credible means believable or trustworthy enough to deserve serious consideration, usually because the source, reasoning or evidence has qualities that support confidence. Credible does not mean automatically correct. A credible source can still contain an error. Common collocations include credible source, credible explanation, credible evidence and credible account. Family members include credibility and credibly. Example: “Maren considered the report credible because it identified its method, sources and limitations.” A powerful boundary question is: “What would make this source more or less credible?” Students can consider expertise, transparency, independence, corroboration, date, method and possible conflicts of interest without turning credibility into a simple trusted/untrusted label.
7. Relevant means directly connected to the question, purpose, decision or issue being considered. Something can be true but irrelevant. That distinction is essential in comprehension, essays and research. Common collocations include relevant evidence, relevant detail, directly relevant and relevant to the question. Family members include relevance, irrelevant and irrelevance. Example: “Leonie removed two accurate facts because they were not relevant to the question being answered.” Relevance is relational: information is not simply relevant in itself; it is relevant to something. Transfer task: take five facts about a topic and sort them according to three different questions. The same fact may move from useful to irrelevant when the question changes.
8. Sufficient means enough for a particular purpose, requirement or conclusion. It does not mean abundant or perfect. Common collocations include sufficient evidence, sufficient time, sufficient reason, sufficient detail and necessary and sufficient in more technical contexts. Family members include sufficiency and insufficient. Example: “One quotation showed the character was worried, but it was not sufficient to prove that fear controlled every decision.” The key question is “Enough for what?” A single observation may be sufficient to show that an event occurred but insufficient to establish a general pattern. Learning this word helps students calibrate claims and understand why more evidence is sometimes required.
9. Valid means logically, methodologically or contextually acceptable according to the rules or standards that apply. In ordinary school reasoning, a valid point is one that genuinely follows or is properly supported. In technical fields, validity can have narrower meanings. Common collocations include valid argument, valid conclusion, valid method, valid reason and valid measurement. Family members include validity, validate and invalid. Example: “The conclusion was plausible, but Iona asked whether it was valid given the limited sample.” The word should not become a vague synonym for good. Ask which rule, assumption or standard determines validity in this context.
10. Corroborate means to strengthen or confirm a statement, account or finding by providing additional independent evidence. Corroboration is especially useful when one source may be incomplete or uncertain. Common collocations include corroborate an account, corroborating evidence, corroborate the findings and independently corroborated. Family members include corroboration and corroborative. Example: “Two photographs and a time-stamped message corroborated the witness’s account of when the event occurred.” The boundary with repetition matters: two websites copying the same original claim are not necessarily independent corroboration. The deeper idea is convergence from distinct evidence routes.
Words 11–20: Reading and Meaning
11. Interpret means to explain or understand the meaning of information, language, behaviour, data or events. Interpretation is not permission to invent any meaning. Strong interpretations are constrained by evidence and context. Common collocations include interpret a text, interpret the data, interpret a gesture and interpret the results. Family members include interpretation and interpretive. Example: “Maren interpreted the final image as hopeful because it reversed the darker pattern established earlier.” Two interpretations can differ while both remain defensible if each accounts for the evidence. The skill is therefore not finding one magical answer but building an explanation whose fit with the available evidence can be shown.
12. Perspective is a particular viewpoint, position or way of understanding a situation. Perspective is shaped by information, experience, role, goals and assumptions. Common collocations include from the perspective of, different perspective, historical perspective, broader perspective and shift in perspective. Related forms include perspectival in specialist writing, though most Secondary 2 students will mainly use the noun. Example: “Iona compared the resident’s perspective with the planner’s perspective and noticed that both valued safety but defined convenience differently.” Perspective is not the same as bias. Every account has a perspective; bias involves a systematic inclination that may distort selection or judgement.
13. Context is the surrounding information, situation or conditions that help determine meaning. A word, quotation, statistic or action can change significance when context changes. Common collocations include in context, historical context, social context, context clues and out of context. Family members include contextual and contextualise. Example: “The word ‘radical’ sounded negative until Maren examined its context and saw that the writer meant a far-reaching change rather than reckless behaviour.” Context operates at several scales: the sentence, paragraph, whole text, social situation, historical moment and subject domain. Strong readers check the smallest scale that resolves meaning, then widen if ambiguity remains.
14. Implication is a meaning, consequence or conclusion that is suggested rather than fully stated, or a likely effect that follows from an idea or action. Common collocations include the implication is, possible implications, long-term implications and implication for. Family members include imply and implicit. Example: “If the study measured only volunteers, one implication is that the results may not represent everyone.” The word has two related routes: implied meaning and consequence. Students should identify which route is active. Asking “What follows from this?” often reveals an implication that is not explicitly written.
15. Connotation is the emotional, cultural or evaluative colouring a word carries beyond its basic dictionary meaning. Words can point to similar things while creating different attitudes. Common collocations include positive connotation, negative connotation, strong connotations and cultural connotation. The partner term is denotation. Example: “Calling a group a ‘mob’ rather than a ‘crowd’ changes the connotation even if both refer to many people gathered together.” Connotation explains why synonym replacement can fail. A word may be semantically close yet socially or emotionally wrong for the sentence. Secondary 2 writers should learn to ask not only “What does this word name?” but also “What attitude does this word carry?”
16. Denotation is a word’s direct or core referential meaning, considered separately from the feelings or associations it may carry. Common collocations include literal denotation, denotative meaning and the paired phrase denotation and connotation. Example: “The denotation of ‘home’ is a place where someone lives, but its connotations may include safety, belonging, family or memory.” Denotation is useful because it gives students a baseline. When two words have similar denotations but different connotations, the writer’s choice can reveal tone or stance. The distinction also helps when analysing loaded language: first establish what the word literally refers to, then identify what additional judgement or emotion it brings.
17. Ambiguous means open to more than one reasonable interpretation, often because information, wording or reference is unclear. Ambiguous is not the same as difficult. A hard sentence may have one clear meaning once understood; an ambiguous sentence genuinely permits alternatives. Common collocations include ambiguous wording, ambiguous statement, deliberately ambiguous and remain ambiguous. Family members include ambiguity and unambiguous. Example: “The notice said students should meet the teacher near the old hall, but ‘old hall’ was ambiguous because two buildings used that name.” A useful repair is to name the competing interpretations explicitly and identify what extra information would resolve them.
18. Explicit means stated, shown or expressed directly and clearly rather than left for the reader to infer. Common collocations include explicit statement, explicit instruction, make explicit and explicit evidence. The main contrast is implicit. Example: “The writer never made an explicit accusation; instead, the doubt appeared through repeated questions.” Explicit does not necessarily mean simple. A complex idea can be explicitly stated. In comprehension, students should separate information that the text directly gives from information that must be inferred. In instructions, making criteria explicit reduces ambiguity because the learner can see the required operation instead of guessing the teacher’s expectation.
19. Implicit means present in meaning, structure or assumption without being directly stated. Common collocations include implicit meaning, implicit assumption, implicit bias and implicit message. Family members include implicitly and the related verb imply. Example: “The advertisement’s implicit message was that owning the product would increase social status, even though it never said so directly.” A strong reader locates the clues that support an implicit reading. The word is especially useful when examining assumptions. A claim can depend on an implicit premise that remains invisible until someone asks what must be true for the reasoning to work.
20. Nuance is a small but meaningful difference in meaning, tone, degree or implication. To notice nuance is to move beyond broad labels such as good/bad or happy/sad and recognise finer distinctions. Common collocations include subtle nuance, nuance of meaning, lose the nuance and nuanced argument. Family members include nuanced. Example: “Iona noticed the nuance between ‘reluctant’ and ‘opposed’: the first suggests hesitation, while the second suggests a clearer negative position.” Nuance is a central Secondary 2 skill because advanced vocabulary often improves writing not by making it harder but by increasing resolution. Better word choice lets the reader see smaller differences accurately.
Words 21–30: Writing and Argument
21. Articulate means to express an idea clearly and effectively in speech or writing. It can also describe a person who communicates clearly. Common collocations include articulate a view, articulate a concern, clearly articulate and highly articulate. Family members include articulation. Example: “Maren could sense the problem in the argument but needed a more precise sentence to articulate it.” Articulation is not the same as complexity. A short explanation may be more articulate than a long one if the relationships between ideas are easier to follow. Transfer task: explain one difficult concept first in everyday language, then in subject-appropriate language without changing the underlying meaning.
22. Coherent means logically connected and easy to follow as a whole. A coherent paragraph has sentences that belong together and build a recognisable line of thought. Common collocations include coherent argument, coherent explanation, coherent structure and internally coherent. Family members include coherence and coherently. Example: “Iona understood every sentence separately, but the paragraph was not coherent because the evidence did not connect to the claim.” Coherence differs from grammatical correctness. Ten correct sentences can still form a poor paragraph if they point in unrelated directions. To test coherence, summarise the paragraph in one sentence and ask whether every major sentence helps that summary become clearer or better supported.
23. Concise means expressed in relatively few words without losing necessary meaning. Concise is not the same as short at any cost. A sentence that deletes essential qualifications may be brief but inaccurate. Common collocations include concise answer, concise summary, clear and concise and concise explanation. Family members include concision and concisely. Example: “Leonie reduced the response from five sentences to three while keeping the reason, evidence and limitation, making it more concise rather than merely shorter.” A useful edit is to remove repetition, empty framing and words that add no new distinction. Concision is compression with meaning preserved.
24. Elaborate as a verb means to add useful detail, explanation or development so an idea becomes fuller and clearer. It does not mean to make language decorative. Common collocations include elaborate on a point, elaborate further and elaborate explanation. Family members include elaboration. Example: “When asked to elaborate, Maren added the mechanism linking sleep loss to slower recall rather than adding another adjective.” Good elaboration answers a productive question: how, why, under what conditions, with what example, or with what consequence? Weak elaboration simply repeats the claim. A useful drill is to take a one-line answer and expand it using exactly one mechanism and one example.
25. Substantiate means to support a claim with adequate evidence, reasoning or factual detail. It is stronger than merely mentioning evidence because the support must make the claim more defensible. Common collocations include substantiate a claim, substantiate an allegation, substantiate the argument and well-substantiated. Family members include substantiation. Example: “Iona asked the writer to substantiate the broad statement with data from more than one source.” The word is especially useful for distinguishing assertion from supported argument. A claim may sound confident and still be unsubstantiated. When reading, ask which sentences do the substantiating work and whether they are relevant, credible and sufficient.
26. Qualify in academic writing means to limit, soften or make a statement more precise by adding conditions, scope or degree. This is different from qualifying for a competition. Common patterns include qualify a claim, qualified agreement and with an important qualification. Family members include qualification. Example: “Instead of writing ‘social media harms attention’, Maren qualified the claim: ‘Frequent switching between short-form content can make sustained attention harder in some contexts.’” Qualification often strengthens an argument because it prevents the claim from outrunning the evidence. Useful qualifiers include may, often, in some cases, under these conditions and to a limited extent.
27. Counterclaim is a claim that opposes, challenges or offers an alternative to another claim. Common collocations include address a counterclaim, respond to the counterclaim and strong counterclaim. Example: “The essay argued for later school start times, then considered the counterclaim that transport and family schedules could become more difficult.” A counterclaim is not an obstacle to hide. It is a test of whether the main argument can survive contact with another plausible position. Strong argumentative writing represents the counterclaim fairly before answering it. If the opposing view is weakened into something unreasonable, the response may look easier but the reasoning becomes less credible.
28. Concession is an acknowledgement that part of an opposing view, limitation or inconvenient fact has merit. Common collocations include make a concession, important concession and concede that. Family members include the verb concede. Example: “Iona conceded that the cheaper option reduced immediate cost, but argued that maintenance made it less economical over five years.” Concession differs from surrender. The writer can accept one point while maintaining the larger claim. It is useful when reality is mixed rather than absolute. Sentence frames include “Although ___ is true, ___ remains more important because ___” and “This objection is valid to the extent that ___; however, ___.”
29. Synthesis is the process or result of combining information or ideas from several sources into a new, integrated understanding. It is not a pile of summaries. Common collocations include synthesis of evidence, synthesise information, research synthesis and integrated synthesis. Family members include synthesise and synthetic, although the latter has other meanings. Example: “Maren created a synthesis by showing how the science article, survey and interview all explained different parts of the same problem.” A useful test is whether the sources interact. If each source sits in a separate paragraph with no comparison, relationship or combined conclusion, synthesis has not yet happened.
30. Transition is a movement from one state, stage or idea to another; in writing, it also refers to language that makes that movement clear. Common collocations include smooth transition, transition between ideas, period of transition and transitional phrase. Family members include transitional. Example: “Leonie added one transition sentence showing why the paragraph about causes led naturally to the paragraph about solutions.” Transition words such as however or therefore help only when the underlying relationship is real. The goal is not to sprinkle connectors. It is to make the reader see how one idea changes the route into the next.
Words 31–40: Relationships and Categories
31. Compare means to examine two or more things to identify meaningful similarities and, depending on the task, differences. Common collocations include compare with, compare the results, compare approaches and comparative analysis. Family members include comparison and comparative. Example: “Iona compared the two accounts by looking at what each included, omitted and emphasised.” Strong comparison requires a shared dimension: cost, speed, reliability, motive, structure, tone or another criterion. Listing unrelated facts about A and B is not enough. A useful frame is “Both A and B ___, but A ___ whereas B ___.”
32. Contrast means to examine or present important differences between things. As a noun, a contrast is a noticeable difference. Common collocations include contrast with, sharp contrast, by contrast and contrast the two methods. Family members include contrasting and contrastive. Example: “Maren contrasted the narrator’s calm language with the chaotic events being described.” Contrast becomes analytical when the difference matters. Saying one object is red and another blue may be accurate but irrelevant unless colour is connected to the question. Ask what the difference changes: interpretation, performance, consequence, tone, reliability or choice.
33. Distinguish means to recognise or explain the difference between things that may look similar. Common collocations include distinguish between, clearly distinguish, distinguishing feature and difficult to distinguish. Family members include distinction and distinctive. Example: “Leonie distinguished an explanation from a justification: the first shows how or why something happened, while the second shows why a claim or choice is defensible.” This word is powerful because many examination errors are boundary errors. Students know two concepts roughly but cannot separate them under pressure. A distinction test asks for one feature that changes classification.
34. Equivalent means equal in value, meaning, function or effect according to a relevant standard, though not necessarily identical in form. Common collocations include roughly equivalent, equivalent value, equivalent expression and functional equivalent. Family members include equivalence. Example: “Two fractions can look different yet be equivalent because they represent the same proportion.” In language, paraphrases aim for meaning equivalence, not word-for-word sameness. The boundary with identical matters: equivalent things can differ in appearance while matching in the dimension that matters.
35. Criterion is a standard used to judge, classify or decide something; the plural is criteria. Common collocations include selection criterion, evaluation criteria, meet the criterion and criterion for success. Example: “Before evaluating the two solutions, Iona defined three criteria: safety, cost and durability.” Criteria protect judgement from becoming vague. If a student says one answer is better, ask “Better according to which criterion?” Different criteria can produce different winners. A fast comparison becomes more rigorous when the learner names the standard first.
36. Factor is a condition, element or influence that contributes to an outcome. In Mathematics it can also mean a number or expression that divides or multiplies in a particular way, so context matters. Common collocations include key factor, contributing factor, risk factor and factor affecting. Example: “Sleep was one factor affecting recall, but motivation and prior knowledge also mattered.” A factor does not automatically cause an outcome by itself. The word often signals a multi-causal system. When students use it, they should ask whether the factor is necessary, sufficient, merely associated or one influence among many.
37. Variable is something that can take different values or change. In experiments, variables are features that may be controlled, changed or measured; in Mathematics, a variable can represent a value that may vary.
