Layer 1: Knowledge — The Student Does Not Yet Have the Necessary Resource
Knowledge gaps are real and should not be disguised as “carelessness”. A student may not know the meaning of a key word, the function of a grammatical structure, the conventions of a text type, how to develop an argument or enough background information to interpret a passage.
When the problem is knowledge, the repair is teaching. The tutor explains, models, gives guided examples and builds retrieval until the knowledge becomes available.
Knowledge Gap Example: Vocabulary
A student misreads a paragraph because the word ambivalent is unknown and the surrounding context is not enough to infer it confidently. The child cannot interpret the writer’s attitude without first building the word meaning.
The repair may include contextual inference, morphology, synonyms and repeated use. More comprehension questions alone will not fix a missing lexical resource.

Layer 2: Interpretation — The Student Has Resources but Builds the Wrong Meaning
Interpretation failures are especially important in English because the language can be understood locally while the task is misunderstood globally. The student may know every word but miss irony, misread a pronoun, overlook a contrast, misunderstand the question command or infer beyond the evidence.
When the problem is interpretation, reteaching basic grammar may waste time. The repair should target how the student reads relationships and task demands.
Interpretation Example: The Command Is Misread
A question asks, “How does the writer show that the neighbourhood has changed?” The student answers, “The neighbourhood became more crowded.” That may identify a change but does not explain how the writer shows it. The task may require language evidence or textual technique.
The student knew the passage. The error occurred when the command was translated into the wrong thinking job.
Interpretation Example: Evidence Is Overextended
A character replies briefly, avoids eye contact and leaves the room quickly. The student concludes that the character is dishonest. The evidence may support discomfort or avoidance, but dishonesty may be too strong without more information.
The repair is an inference boundary: what is stated, what is implied and what the evidence can actually justify?
Layer 3: Execution — The Student Knows and Understands, but Does Not Deliver Reliably
Execution errors are frustrating because the student can often explain the correct answer immediately after the paper. Parents may ask, “If you knew it, why didn’t you do it?” That question is diagnostic. The child may need a trigger, a checking routine, better pacing or more independent retrieval.
When the problem is execution, another long explanation may not help. The student needs repeated performance under conditions close enough to the real task that the method becomes available at the right moment.
Execution Example: Editing
The student can explain subject–verb agreement perfectly when asked, yet misses the same error inside a dense editing passage. The knowledge is present. The trigger is not.
We train the student to identify the core subject before choosing the verb and later reduce that visible routine until it becomes fast and internal.
Execution Example: Writing Under Time
The student can plan a strong paragraph in class but abandons the structure during a timed assessment. The problem may be time allocation, working-memory load or insufficient fluency with the planning routine.
The repair is timed compression: practise the same planning decision with progressively less external support and less time.

How We Tell the Layers Apart
We change the task while preserving the skill. If the student fails even with extra time and a simplified example, knowledge may be missing. If they succeed after the question is paraphrased, interpretation was likely important. If they succeed immediately when prompted with “check the subject”, execution or triggering is implicated.
This is why one more identical worksheet can be low-value. It does not tell us which variable mattered.
Comprehension Diagnosis
For comprehension, we reconstruct the route:
- Did the student understand the vocabulary?
- Did they resolve references correctly?
- Did they understand the paragraph’s direction?
- Did they interpret the command accurately?
- Did they locate the relevant evidence?
- Did they make an evidence-bound inference?
- Could they express the answer precisely?
A mark can leak at any one of these points. The first broken point is often the best repair target.
Writing Diagnosis
For writing, a weak paragraph may come from missing content knowledge, misunderstanding the task, weak organisation or poor timed execution.
We ask whether the student can explain the purpose and audience, generate relevant ideas, organise the argument or narrative, write clear sentences and sustain the method under time. The diagnosis determines whether the next lesson teaches, clarifies or calibrates.
Grammar and Editing Diagnosis
A grammar mistake may be pure knowledge: the rule is unknown. It may be interpretation: the student misidentifies the subject or clause relationship. It may be execution: the student knows the relationship but skips the check when reading quickly.
We therefore ask the child to explain the original choice. The explanation often reveals the layer faster than another ten items.
Oral Diagnosis
A student who gives short oral responses may lack ideas, misunderstand the question, struggle to organise thoughts in real time or feel inhibited. These require different support.
We can reduce the task, give planning time, change the topic or let the student explain the same idea in writing. Differences across conditions help identify the bottleneck.
Do Not Call Every Execution Error “Careless”
“Carelessness” is often too vague to repair. Why did the child not notice? Were they overloaded? Did they lack a trigger? Was the checking routine too broad? Did they misallocate time? Did they change a correct answer without evidence?
Turning “careless” into a specific execution mechanism gives the student something actionable.
The Repair Must Match the Layer
- Knowledge repair: teach, model, practise, retrieve.
- Interpretation repair: compare meanings, clarify commands, inspect evidence and boundaries.
- Execution repair: create triggers, timed practice, targeted checking and support fading.
If the layer is wrong, practice becomes inefficient. A student with an interpretation problem can memorise more vocabulary without improving the actual error. A student with an execution problem can hear the same explanation repeatedly and still fail under time.
Mixed Failures Are Common
Real students do not always fit one box. A vocabulary gap can cause a passage misinterpretation, which then produces a weak written answer. Weak knowledge and execution can coexist.
We therefore look for the earliest useful weak link. Repair the upstream failure, then retest downstream performance. If the later problem remains, it receives its own intervention.
