Primary 4 students often find the right part of the passage and still lose the mark.
That tells us something important: comprehension is not only about locating evidence. The student must also understand what the question requires and turn the evidence into a complete answer.
For Yishun families, this page focuses on that repair.
Quick Read
- Finding the line is only the first step.
- Questions ask for different jobs. Identify, explain and infer are not interchangeable.
- Evidence must be converted into meaning.
- Precision matters. The marker only sees what reaches the page.
The One-Sentence Answer
Good Primary 4 English tuition should help students move from locating evidence to explaining exactly what that evidence proves.
Why Answers Become Weak After the Right Evidence Is Found
The child may copy too much, omit the reasoning, answer only part of the question or use language that is too vague.
A useful correction therefore asks where the answer lost meaning.
Step 1: Read the Question Before the Passage Line
What is the student being asked to do? A “why” question requires cause or explanation. An inference question requires evidence plus reasoning.
Step 2: Select the Smallest Useful Evidence
Copying a large section can hide weak selection. The student should know which exact detail is doing the work.
Step 3: Explain the Link
“She looked at the clock repeatedly” is evidence. “This suggests she was anxious about being late” completes the reasoning.
Step 4: Check Completeness
Before moving on, compare the number of demands in the question with the number of ideas in the answer.
What Parents Can Ask
- “Which part of the passage proves your answer?”
- “What does that detail show?”
- “Have you answered every part?”
How eduKate Approaches Primary 4 English
eduKate uses small groups of three to make evidence and answer construction visible. We diagnose whether the weakness is task recognition, evidence selection, inference or expression, then test the repair on new passages.
The Goal Is Not Longer Answers
It is answers that are complete, precise and easy to follow.
