Examination Craft begins before the answer.
It begins with a much smaller decision:
What is this question actually asking me to do?
That sounds obvious.
But it is one of the easiest places for a capable student to lose marks.
A student sees a familiar topic. The brain recognises it. A memorised paragraph, formula, method or explanation becomes available. The pen starts moving.
Only later does the student discover that the question wanted something slightly different.
The knowledge may have been correct.
The answer may even have been impressive.
But it did the wrong job.

An examination question is not merely a topic label. It is a task specification. Before answering, a student needs to identify the action required, the object of that action, the scope of the response, the information that matters and any limits built into the question. Examination Craft trains the student to translate the printed question into a clear job before spending time producing the answer.
Knowing the Topic Is Not the Same as Reading the Task
Imagine a student who has revised photosynthesis thoroughly.
The student sees the word photosynthesis in a Science question and immediately begins writing everything remembered about light, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide, water and glucose.
But perhaps the question was not asking:
“What is photosynthesis?”
Perhaps it was asking the student to explain why a change in one condition affected the result of an experiment.
The topic is photosynthesis.
The job is explanation.
Those are not the same thing.
The same problem appears everywhere.
In Mathematics, a student may recognise a chapter but use a familiar method before noticing a condition that changes the route.
In English, a student may have strong ideas about a passage but answer the general topic instead of the precise inference, comparison, language or evidence task.
In Humanities, a student may know the content but describe when the question requires judgement.
This is why Examination Craft separates two questions:
- What do I know about this?
- What must I do with what I know?
The first is knowledge.
The second is task control.
A Question Is a Small Contract
One useful way to read an examination question is to treat it as a small contract between the paper and the student.
The paper is effectively saying:
Show me this particular capability, in this particular form, using the information and limits provided here.
The student’s job is not to impress the paper with everything they know.
It is to satisfy that contract as accurately and efficiently as possible.
This is why a shorter answer can sometimes be better than a longer one.
And why a sophisticated answer can still be weak if it misses the actual demand.
The Five Things to Notice Before You Answer
A strong student does not need to turn every question into a bureaucratic checklist. The aim is to make the scan increasingly automatic.
But while learning the craft, five elements are worth making visible.
1. The action
What must you do?
State? Explain? Compare? Calculate? Justify? Identify? Evaluate? Suggest?
These words are not decorative. Cambridge International, for example, explicitly defines command words because they signal how a candidate is expected to respond. Exact terminology varies across qualifications and subjects, so students should always use the wording and guidance for their own examination.
2. The object
What exactly are you acting on?
Not “the chapter”.
Not “the passage”.
The exact relationship, quantity, idea, character, evidence, process or claim named in the question.
3. The scope
How wide is the answer supposed to be?
One factor?
Two differences?
A specific line?
A particular time period?
A complete solution?
A response based only on the source?
Scope stops the student from answering a larger and more expensive question than the one printed.
4. The useful information
What has the paper already given you?
Numbers. Units. A diagram. A graph. A quotation. A table. A source. A condition. A previous sub-part. A keyword.
Students sometimes treat these as scenery.
Often they are part of the machinery of the question.
5. The limits
What must remain true?
Use the information in the passage.
Give your answer to a stated accuracy.
Do not use a calculator.
Refer to both sources.
Choose one example.
Limits are easy to miss precisely because the student is busy thinking about the content.
The Dangerous Moment: Recognition
Recognition feels good.
“I know this.”
That feeling can create speed, and speed can be useful.
But recognition can also make a student stop reading.
The chapter name triggers the remembered method before the whole question has been processed.
A mature examination habit is therefore slightly paradoxical:
When a question looks very familiar, that is a reason to become more precise, not less.
Not suspicious.
Just precise.
A Ten-Second Examination Craft Routine
For a substantial question, a student can practise a very short internal translation:
- Do: What action is required?
- On: What exactly am I acting on?
- Within: What scope or condition limits the answer?
- Using: What information matters?
- Deliver: What would a complete response look like?
This is not meant to consume ten seconds on every one-mark item.
It is a training scaffold.
With enough practice, the student becomes quicker at seeing the job without consciously reciting the routine.
That is what craft looks like.
Three Different Subjects, the Same Underlying Skill
Mathematics
A student sees a triangle and thinks: trigonometry.
But the question may require a proof, an exact value, a length, an angle or a comparison. The diagram activates knowledge; the wording decides the job.
Science
A student recognises a familiar process and writes the definition.
But the paper may ask for an explanation of an observed result. The definition may be relevant knowledge, but it is not yet the required output.
English
A student understands the passage and has a sensible interpretation.
But the question may ask for evidence from a specific section, a comparison between two moments, or an explanation of how language creates an effect. Understanding is necessary; task matching determines whether that understanding becomes a usable answer.
What This Article Does Not Mean
It does not mean students should become afraid of every word in a question.
It does not mean there is one universal decoding formula for every examination.
It does not mean command words alone determine the complete answer.
And it does not replace subject knowledge.
The purpose is more modest:
Do not spend valuable capability on the wrong task.
How Teachers and Parents Can See This Skill
When a student loses marks, resist the immediate conclusion that the content was not learned.
Look at the question and the response together.
Ask:
- Did the student understand what action was required?
- Did the response stay on the exact object of the question?
- Was an important condition missed?
- Did the student use the information supplied?
- Was the answer solving a nearby question instead?
This matters because the repair is different.
If the student does not know the concept, teach the concept.
If the student knows the concept but repeatedly misreads the job, more notes may not solve the problem.
The student needs practice translating questions into tasks.
The Independence Test
A useful teaching test is simple.
Give the student an unfamiliar question in a familiar subject.
Before allowing them to solve it, ask:
What job is this question giving you?
If the student can explain the job clearly, identify the relevant information and describe what a complete response would need to accomplish, the question has already become smaller.
Not easier in the sense of magically knowing the answer.
Smaller because the uncertainty has been reduced.
That is a form of control.
