Students are often told to “answer the question”.
That instruction sounds complete.
It is not.
Because before a student can answer well, there is another problem to solve:
What would count as a sufficient answer here?
This is one of the quiet differences between a student who knows a subject and a student who can consistently turn that knowledge into marks.
The first student may know many true things.
The second student knows which of those true things need to become visible on the page.

An examination answer is evidence. It must make enough of the student’s relevant capability visible for the assessment to recognise it. “Enough” depends on the subject, question type, mark allocation and official marking requirements. Examination Craft does not invent universal answer formulas. It teaches students to look for the evidence burden of the specific task and to stop confusing more writing with a better answer.
The Marker Cannot Award the Thought You Never Showed
A student may understand something perfectly inside their own head.
That understanding matters educationally.
But an examination has a practical limitation.
The marker receives the response.
Not the student’s internal monologue.
So Examination Craft asks a very operational question:
What must become visible for this response to demonstrate the requested capability?
This does not mean writing everything.
It means showing the right evidence.
Correct Is Not Always Complete
Suppose a Science question asks why a result occurred.
A student writes one scientifically correct fact.
The fact may be true.
But if the question requires a relationship between cause and effect, the fact alone may not complete the job.
Or suppose a Mathematics question asks for a value and the paper or question structure allows method credit.
A student writes only an unsupported final number.
Even if the number is right, the response may expose less of the student’s method than a properly structured solution would. Exact marking treatment varies by examination, so students should follow the requirements of their own syllabus and paper.
Or suppose an English question asks for an explanation of an effect.
A quotation may be relevant evidence.
But merely copying it may not yet show the interpretation the question is asking for.
The problem is not truth.
The problem is sufficiency.
Longer Is Not Automatically Safer
Students sometimes respond to uncertainty by writing more.
Another sentence.
Another example.
Another explanation.
Another paragraph just in case.
This can feel responsible.
But examinations are constrained environments.
Every extra minute spent proving something already adequately demonstrated is a minute no longer available elsewhere.
So there are two opposite failures:
- Under-answering: the response does not expose enough relevant evidence.
- Over-answering: the response keeps consuming time after the job is already done.
Examination Craft tries to locate the middle.
Sufficient, clear, relevant, then move.
The Evidence Burden Changes with the Question
There is no single universal number of sentences, working lines or examples that makes an answer complete.
The burden changes.
A request to identify something is different from a request to explain it.
A request to compare requires a relationship across items rather than two isolated mini-descriptions.
A request to justify needs support for a position.
A request to calculate requires a mathematical route and result appropriate to the paper.
A request to evaluate normally asks for judgement rather than a catalogue of facts.
Cambridge International’s command-word guidance makes this distinction explicit: different verbs represent different response jobs. Other examination systems have their own terminology and assessment objectives.
The craft is not memorising a generic answer template.
The craft is learning to estimate the evidence burden of the actual question in front of you.
Marks Are a Clue, Not a Complete Formula
Students naturally look at the number of marks.
That is sensible.
Marks can provide information about the likely scale of the task.
But “one mark equals one sentence” is not a universal law.
Some marks reward separate points.
Some reward linked reasoning.
Some are attached to method.
Some use levels or bands.
Some assessment objectives are not reducible to one neat sentence per mark.
So use the marks as information.
Then combine that information with the question wording, subject knowledge and the actual conventions of the paper.
The Completion Test
Before moving on from a substantial answer, a student can ask three questions:
- Did I perform the requested action?
- Did I make the necessary evidence visible?
- Is there anything missing that would change whether this answer counts as complete?
If the answer is yes, yes and no, it may be time to leave.
Notice what is absent from the test:
“Do I feel perfectly certain?”
Certainty and completeness are different.
A student can produce a complete answer while still feeling some uncertainty.
That distinction matters under time pressure.
The Marker-Visible Principle
A useful teaching phrase is:
If it matters to the mark, make it visible.
Not louder.
Not longer.
Visible.
In Mathematics, that may mean a logically readable method rather than invisible mental arithmetic where the assessment expects working.
In Science, it may mean making the causal link explicit rather than assuming the marker will infer it.
In English, it may mean connecting evidence to the actual inference or effect instead of dropping a quotation onto the page and walking away.
In Humanities, it may mean making the judgement and support visible rather than leaving the conclusion implicit.
The exact form belongs to the subject.
The general craft is the same:
Do not make the marker reconstruct the important part of your thinking for you.
Why Capable Students Sometimes Over-Answer
This is particularly common among conscientious students.
They know a lot.
They want to be safe.
So they keep adding.
The strength is knowledge.
The weakness is stopping.
An examination rewards what the assessment asks for, not the maximum number of correct statements a student can produce before time expires.
This is where restraint becomes part of craft.
Not because students should write less for its own sake.
Because they should spend their finite time where additional work still has value.
How to Train “What Counts?”
Take a completed paper and do something different from ordinary marking.
For selected questions, hide the student’s answer first.
Ask the student to predict:
- What would a complete answer need to show?
- What evidence would be essential?
- What would be relevant but unnecessary?
- What would make the response too thin?
Then reveal the student’s actual response and compare.
This turns marking into calibration.
The student is learning not merely whether an answer was right, but how accurately they can predict the requirements of a question.
That is much closer to the skill needed in the examination hall.
What Parents and Tutors Should Diagnose
If a student repeatedly loses marks despite knowing the topic, classify the failure before prescribing more work.
- Was the knowledge absent?
- Was the question misread?
- Was the right idea retrieved but incompletely expressed?
- Did the student fail to show a required link, step or justification?
- Did the student over-answer and create a time problem elsewhere?
One mark is a signal.
It is not automatically a diagnosis.
The repair should match the earliest useful weakness.

Official command-word guidance is useful because it makes clear that different questions ask candidates to perform different actions. Metacognition research is also relevant: students become more independent when they are explicitly taught to plan an approach, monitor whether it is working and evaluate the result rather than merely completing more tasks.

The useful sentence
Do not ask only:
“Is what I wrote true?”
Also ask:
“Have I made enough of the right evidence visible for this answer to count?”
