Trust is the willingness to rely on a person, group or system under uncertainty because available evidence suggests that important expectations are likely to be met.

Trust Should Be Calibrated by Scope, Stakes and Reversibility
Trust is not one global switch. It should be calibrated to what is being entrusted, how much harm could follow from failure, and how reversible the decision is.
You may trust a student to choose which practice set to start with while still checking a high-stakes laboratory setup. You may trust a familiar software tool for routine formatting but independently verify a consequential financial calculation.
Low stakes + reversible → lighter verification. High stakes + hard to reverse → stronger verification even when trust is high.

Leaders, parents and professionals often delegate work to people or systems they trust. Delegation can increase scale and autonomy, but it does not automatically erase the delegator’s responsibility to choose an appropriate agent, define the job and monitor proportionately to risk.
This becomes especially important with AI and automation. A system may perform a task reliably most of the time while still producing rare high-impact errors. Trusting the tool can be rational; surrendering all verification and accountability to the tool is a different decision.
Trust Can Become Self-Reinforcing — in Good and Bad Directions
Justified trust can create more opportunities for cooperation, which generates more evidence and stronger relationships. But misplaced distrust can also become self-reinforcing: people withhold information, the system becomes less responsive, and the resulting poor coordination appears to confirm the original distrust.
