The one-sentence truth: Thirty days before a promotion exam is not the time to collect hundreds of new words. It is the time to make your best vocabulary reliably retrievable.

Days 1–5: Diagnose and reduce
Choose about 40–60 high-value words rather than attempting to review everything. Test meaning, collocation, distinction and one original sentence. Mark words red, amber or green.
Days 6–10: Claims, qualification and causation
Review vocabulary for thesis statements and paragraph mechanisms: contend, arguably, contingent, contribute, exacerbate, mitigate, perpetuate, catalyst. Rewrite weak claims until they are precise and defensible.
Days 11–15: Evidence, evaluation and counterargument
Focus on credible, empirical, corroborate, representative, viable, equitable, proportionate, concede, rebut, caveat. Write one paragraph per day that includes evidence evaluation and a limitation.
Days 16–20: Paper 2 control
Practise vocabulary-in-context, paraphrase, summary, inference and tone. Use the cover-and-rebuild method: read, hide the passage, reconstruct meaning, then check degree and scope.
Days 21–24: Topic clusters
Build compact clusters for society, economics, governance, technology, environment and media. Limit each cluster to vocabulary you can actually use.
Days 25–27: Transfer under time
Choose unfamiliar questions and give yourself five minutes to plan. Retrieve vocabulary by reasoning job rather than by topic: claim, mechanism, evidence, qualification, counterargument, judgement.
Days 28–29: Full Paper 1 and Paper 2 integration
Complete timed work. Afterward, inspect repeated vague words, awkward collocations and moments where you knew an idea but lacked the language to express it. Repair only those high-value gaps.
Day 30: Light retrieval, not panic
Review your green and amber core. Explain words aloud, produce collocations, and write a few short sentences. Do not overload the final day with unfamiliar vocabulary.
The daily 20-minute core
- 5 minutes: retrieve old words without notes.
- 5 minutes: collocations and distinctions.
- 5 minutes: one GP paragraph or paraphrase.
- 5 minutes: transfer the vocabulary into a different topic.
What to stop doing in the final month
- Stop collecting rare words for prestige.
- Stop counting recognition as mastery.
- Stop memorising long model sentences.
- Stop forcing vocabulary into paragraphs where it does not fit.
- Stop treating Paper 1 and Paper 2 vocabulary as separate universes.
The final readiness test
Take ten core words. If you can define, collocate, distinguish and apply at least eight of them quickly without notes, your vocabulary is becoming exam-ready. Then test the same words in a second topic to confirm transfer.
The deeper lesson
The last month is about reliability. The goal is not to know the largest number of words. It is to have enough precise language available at the exact moment your thinking needs it.
