The one-sentence truth: “My vocabulary is weak” is too vague to fix. You need to know which layer is failing.
Use the Top 100 General Paper Vocabulary Words for JC1 as the diagnostic inventory and the wider JC1–JC2 vocabulary guide as the conceptual parent.
Layer 1: Recognition
Can you recognise the word when you see it? If not, the problem is basic exposure. Choose a smaller vocabulary set and read it repeatedly in context.
Layer 2: Plain meaning
Can you explain the word without using another equally difficult word? If you cannot explain contingent as “dependent on conditions”, the concept is not stable yet.
Layer 3: Collocation
Can you produce natural phrase partners? Mitigate risk, systemic inequality, credible evidence, proportionate response. Weak collocation produces awkward writing even when definitions are correct.
Layer 4: Distinction
Can you separate nearby concepts: equality/equity, efficiency/effectiveness, credible/true, correlation/causality, legality/legitimacy? This layer determines analytical resolution.
Layer 5: Retrieval
Can you produce the word without seeing it? Recognition can create false confidence. Close-book retrieval is the real test.
Layer 6: Sentence use
Can you use the word naturally in one accurate sentence about a real issue? If your sentence bends awkwardly around the word, it is not yet productive.
Layer 7: Argument use
Can the vocabulary help you perform a GP job: qualify, compare, explain causation, evaluate evidence or rebut an objection? This is where vocabulary becomes reasoning.
Layer 8: Paper 2 transfer
Can you use the concept to paraphrase or summarise meaning without distorting degree, scope or causation?
Layer 9: Cross-topic transfer
Can resilience move from climate to economics? Can accountability move from politics to AI? Can equity move from education to healthcare? Transfer is a high-level mastery signal.
The 40-point diagnostic
Choose ten words. For each, award one point for plain meaning, one for a natural collocation, one for a nearby distinction and one for a fresh GP sentence.
- 32–40: productive vocabulary; focus on transfer and nuance.
- 24–31: usable but inconsistent; focus on retrieval and collocation.
- 16–23: mostly passive; reduce new input and increase use.
- Below 16: rebuild a smaller core before adding more words.
