Vocabulary for GP Conclusions: How JC2 Students End with Judgement, Not Repetition

The one-sentence truth: A conclusion should not repeat the essay in smaller font. It should show what became clearer after the argument was tested.

The final paragraph is where JC2 students convert analysis into judgement. A strong conclusion ranks competing considerations, states the conditions under which the verdict holds and identifies what is ultimately decisive.

The four jobs of a conclusion

  • Synthesise: combine the main lines of reasoning rather than list them.
  • Rank: identify which consideration carries the greatest weight.
  • Qualify: state the conditions and limits of the verdict.
  • Close: leave the reader with the deeper principle revealed by the essay.

Useful conclusion vocabulary

On balance, ultimately, comparatively, the decisive consideration, remains defensible, is contingent upon, outweighs, is less significant where, and the stronger conclusion is are useful when they reflect genuine weighing.

Do not introduce a new argument

A conclusion can deepen an existing idea, but it should not suddenly introduce a major example or criterion that the body never examined. The final judgement must emerge from the essay’s own logic.

Return to the criterion

If the essay judged success by effectiveness and equity, conclude on those criteria. If the essay ranked causes by magnitude and durability, return to those standards. This creates coherence.

From repetition to synthesis

Weak: “In conclusion, technology has advantages and disadvantages. It helps people but can also cause problems.”

Stronger: “On balance, digital technology has expanded human capability more than it has diminished it, but that judgement is increasingly contingent on governance. The decisive question is no longer whether technology can create value, but whether institutions can distribute its benefits and constrain harms that individual users cannot manage alone.”

Conditional conclusions are often stronger

A conclusion can be firm and conditional at the same time. “Targeted regulation is justified where harm is substantial, private correction is weak and enforcement is transparent” gives a clear verdict while preserving boundaries.

The final sentence

The final sentence should not reach for drama. It should reveal the governing idea underneath the essay. A discussion of AI may end with a principle about human judgement. An essay on inequality may end with the distinction between opportunity and outcome. An essay on censorship may end with the relationship between power and accountability.

Conclusion audit

  • Have I answered the exact question?
  • Have I ranked the competing considerations?
  • Have I stated conditions?
  • Have I returned to my criteria?
  • Does the final sentence deepen rather than decorate?

Seven-day drill

  • Rewrite five repetitive conclusions.
  • Rank considerations explicitly.
  • Add one condition to each verdict.
  • Remove new examples.
  • Return to the opening criterion.
  • Write five quiet final sentences.
  • Complete three timed conclusions.

Final thought

A conclusion is where the essay stops arguing and starts knowing what the argument was really about.
