Environmental Vocabulary Works Best as a System
Children often meet environmental words one at a time: habitat, ecosystem, biodiversity, conservation, renewable, emissions, sustainability. The words become much easier when the relationships are visible.

Environmental vocabulary becomes memorable when each word explains part of a living system.
Habitat
A habitat is the place where an organism lives and obtains what it needs. Useful collocations include natural habitat, destroy a habitat, protect a habitat, suitable habitat.
Ecosystem
An ecosystem includes living organisms and the physical environment interacting together. The key word is interaction. An ecosystem is not simply a list of animals and plants.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety of living things in an area. It connects naturally with habitat protection and conservation because changes to one part of an ecosystem can affect many others.
Conservation
Conservation means protecting and managing natural resources, habitats or species carefully. Useful phrases include conservation efforts, wildlife conservation, conserve resources.
Renewable
Renewable resources can be replenished naturally over a relatively short human timescale. Common examples include sunlight and wind. Teach the adjective inside phrases such as renewable energy rather than in isolation.
Emissions
Emissions are substances released into the environment, often gases. The word frequently appears with carbon emissions, reduce emissions and vehicle emissions.
Sustainability
Sustainability is about meeting needs in ways that can continue without exhausting resources or creating unacceptable long-term harm. It is a reasoning word because it asks children to consider future consequences.

Worked Example: Habitat Loss
If a forest is cleared, the immediate change is habitat loss. That can reduce food and shelter, alter species populations and reduce biodiversity. Conservation may involve protecting remaining habitat or restoring damaged areas.
Worked Example: Energy Choices
Using renewable energy can reduce dependence on finite fuels and may reduce certain emissions. The vocabulary forms a cause-and-consequence chain rather than separate science terms.
Worked Example: Waste
Words such as reduce, reuse, recycle, conserve, waste, resource allow children to describe not only what to do but why it matters.
Environmental Vocabulary in Comprehension
When reading factual passages, ask children to track systems and relationships. Which species is affected? What changed? What consequence followed? What response is proposed?
Environmental Vocabulary in Oral
Use claim → reason → example → consequence. “I think reducing waste is important because resources are limited. For example, reusing materials can reduce the amount thrown away and support more sustainable habits.”
Environmental Vocabulary in Composition
Environmental language can appear naturally in stories about littering, responsibility, community clean-ups, school projects or caring for animals. Avoid forcing technical terms into scenes where they do not belong.

- Choose one environmental problem.
- Identify what changed.
- Name the affected habitat or resource.
- List two consequences.
- Suggest one response.
- Explain whether the response is sustainable.
The Word-Network Drill
Choose biodiversity and connect it to habitat, species, ecosystem, conservation and endangered. Then explain each relationship in a full sentence.
Common Failure Mode 1: Memorising Definitions Without Systems
A child can define ecosystem and still fail to understand interaction. Use arrows and cause chains.
Common Failure Mode 2: Treating Every Environmental Action as Equally Effective
Ask what problem the action actually addresses. Vocabulary should support reasoning, not slogans.
Common Failure Mode 3: Using “Sustainable” as a General Compliment
Sustainable should connect to long-term continuation, resource use and consequences. It is not simply a more impressive word for “good”.
