Habitat is about suitability
A habitat provides the conditions an organism needs: food, shelter, water, space and suitable physical conditions. Habitat loss therefore means more than “a place disappeared”. It means the living conditions required by an organism were reduced or destroyed.
Ecosystem is about relationships
An ecosystem includes organisms, soil, water, air, temperature, light and the relationships among them. When one part changes, others may be affected. This is why ecosystem vocabulary helps students explain chains rather than isolated facts.
Biodiversity is about variety
Biodiversity can refer broadly to variety among species, genes and ecosystems. At Primary 5 level, the practical idea is simple: environments with many different living things have greater biological variety than environments with very few.

Cause-and-effect language
Deforestation can reduce habitat. Habitat loss can reduce populations. Population decline can reduce biodiversity. A reduction in biodiversity may alter ecosystem relationships. The exact effect depends on context, but the chain gives students a model for environmental explanation.
Comprehension: identify what the writer is actually discussing
If the passage describes where an animal nests, think habitat. If it explains how insects, plants, water and soil affect one another, think ecosystem. If it compares the number and variety of species in two places, biodiversity is central.
Oral English: move from noun to explanation
“Protecting a habitat is important because a species depends on suitable living conditions. If the habitat is destroyed, populations may decline, which can also reduce biodiversity and affect the wider ecosystem.”
Composition: nature vocabulary can carry consequence
Environmental stories become stronger when consequences are specific. Instead of “The forest was destroyed and nature suffered,” show what changed: nesting areas disappeared, water became muddy, animal movement changed, and the once-varied environment became quieter.

Nature vocabulary becomes far more useful when students stop seeing organisms as isolated objects and begin seeing conditions and relationships. A habitat supplies the conditions an organism needs. An ecosystem connects organisms with one another and with physical surroundings. Biodiversity describes variation within that living system.
Habitat Quality Is More Than Location
Two places can look similar on a map but differ greatly as habitats. Food availability, shelter, temperature, water quality, nesting space, predators and disturbance all affect suitability. Habitat loss can therefore occur through degradation even when the land has not completely disappeared.
Ecosystems Are Networks
An ecosystem change can travel through relationships. Fewer insects may affect animals that feed on them; changes in vegetation may alter shade, moisture and shelter; polluted water may affect several species differently. Scale Matters
A fallen tree may reduce habitat for one organism while creating habitat for another. A local change can be harmful to one population without destroying an entire ecosystem. Students should avoid turning every environmental consequence into total collapse.
