A student may know feasible during revision and lose it completely during a live discussion. Speaking places vocabulary under time pressure. The word has to arrive while the student is also listening, thinking, organising and responding.
This article complements the Secondary 2 Essential 100 Vocabulary by training access rather than recognition.
Quick Read: Retrieval Can Be Trained
- practise idea → word, not only word → definition;
- store collocations and chunks;
- use short speaking drills;
- paraphrase when the exact word does not arrive;
- repair and continue instead of freezing.
Train from Concepts
Prompt: “possible and practical” → feasible. “Recover after difficulty” → resilient. “Open and direct honesty” → candid. Speaking begins with ideas, so retrieval practice should too.
Store Chunks
- significant impact;
- legitimate concern;
- feasible solution;
- draw a conclusion;
- evaluate the evidence;
- to some extent.
Chunks reduce the number of individual choices the speaker must make.
Use Paraphrase as a Bridge
If meticulous does not arrive, say “extremely careful about detail” and keep going. Fluency matters. The precise word can be strengthened later.
Repair Naturally
“The plan is possible—more precisely, it seems feasible with the resources we already have.” Self-correction can demonstrate control rather than failure.
One-Minute Drills
- Choose one question.
- Select five possible target words.
- Speak for one minute without looking.
- Do not force targets.
- Afterward, note which ideas lacked vocabulary.
- Repeat with a different topic.
Reduce the Search Space
Organise active vocabulary by functions: evaluating, agreeing, disagreeing, cause, consequence, emotion, evidence. During discussion, the function can activate a small cluster instead of the entire vocabulary store.
Do Not Chase the Perfect Word Too Long
A clear ordinary word is better than ten seconds of silence. Say the idea, then continue. Fluency and precision should support one another.
Speaking Pressure Reveals What Is Truly Active
Use the Secondary 2 Essential 100 as your active bank, then practise retrieving from concepts, situations and live questions. The goal is vocabulary that arrives fast enough to participate in thought.
