Secondary 3 Vocabulary for Cause and Effect: Explaining Why Things Happen

“Because” is one of the most important words in school. It is also one of the easiest to misuse. When students explain why something happened, they often turn a complicated event into a single cause. Strong Secondary 3 vocabulary helps us describe causal relationships with more accuracy.

This article complements the Top 100 Vocabulary List Secondary 3 Grade A1, especially its academic words for reasoning, evidence, inference and outcomes.

Cause is a strong claim

To say A causes B means changing A helps produce B. Sometimes this is well supported. Sometimes we only know that A and B occur together. Vocabulary should distinguish these cases.

Contributing factors

Many real outcomes have several causes. Examination stress may be influenced by workload, expectations, sleep, preparation, personality and uncertainty. Contributes to is often more accurate than causes.

Necessary and sufficient

A necessary condition must be present for an outcome; a sufficient condition is enough to produce it. These ideas help students avoid simplistic reasoning. Oxygen is necessary for ordinary combustion, but oxygen alone is not sufficient to create a fire.

Mechanism

A mechanism explains how the cause produces the effect. “Sleep affects learning” is broad. “Insufficient sleep reduces attention and memory consolidation, making new information harder to retain” identifies a pathway.

Trigger versus background condition

A trigger is the immediate event that sets something off. A background condition makes the event more likely or more severe. One critical comment may trigger an argument, while weeks of unresolved resentment form the background.

Exacerbate and mitigate

Exacerbate means make an existing problem worse. Mitigate means reduce its severity. These words are valuable because they do not imply that the factor created the original problem.

Immediate and long-term effects

A decision can solve one short-term problem while creating later costs. Good cause-and-effect writing tracks time: immediate effect, secondary consequence, long-term outcome.

Direct and indirect effects

A transport improvement may directly reduce travel time and indirectly expand access to jobs or schools. Words such as directly, indirectly, thereby and in turn help show chains.

Feedback loops

Sometimes an effect returns to influence its cause. Confidence may increase participation; participation creates successful experiences; successful experiences build more confidence. This is a reinforcing feedback loop.

Correlation is not causation

If students who read more have larger vocabularies, reading may help vocabulary growth. But other factors—interest, home environment or education—may influence both. The association alone does not prove the full causal story.

Reverse causation

Sometimes we assume A causes B when B may partly cause A. Do confident students speak more, or does speaking more build confidence? Both directions may operate.

Confounding factors

A third factor can influence both variables. This is why empirical evidence must be interpreted carefully.

Worked example: education

“Smaller classes automatically cause better results” is too strong. A more precise explanation might be: “Smaller classes can create more opportunities for feedback and teacher attention, but their effect depends on teaching quality, student needs and how the additional capacity is used.”

Worked example: social media

Instead of “social media causes anxiety”, write: “Certain patterns of social-media use may exacerbate anxiety by increasing social comparison, sleep disruption or exposure to hostile interactions.” The mechanism makes the claim more precise.

Worked example: narrative

A character’s anger may not be caused by the final insult alone. The insult can function as a trigger after accumulated frustration. Understanding causal layers improves both narrative writing and comprehension.

The “what else?” test

After naming a cause, ask what else could contribute. This single question prevents many simplistic explanations.

The mechanism test

Complete the sentence: “A affects B because…” If you cannot explain a plausible pathway, your causal claim may be too loose.

The counterfactual test

Ask what might have happened if the proposed cause were absent. Counterfactual thinking helps clarify whether the cause is genuinely important.

Practice routine

  1. Choose one outcome.
  2. List three possible causes.
  3. Separate triggers from background conditions.
  4. Explain one mechanism.
  5. Name one factor that could exacerbate or mitigate the outcome.
  6. Write a qualified conclusion.

Return to the hero

Use words such as empirical, inference, hypothesis, outcome, prediction, inductive and deductive from the Secondary 3 Grade A1 hero to strengthen causal reasoning.

If so, “because” becomes more than a connector. It becomes a disciplined explanation of how the world changes.


Deep Causal Lab: Maps, Mediators, Confounders and Feedback

Real causes often form networks rather than straight lines. A useful causal explanation therefore asks not only whether A influences B, but through what pathway, under which conditions, and what other variables may alter the relationship.

Build a Causal Map

Start with an outcome in the centre. Add direct causes, background conditions, mediators and feedback loops. For example, poor sleep may reduce attention directly, while stress can reduce sleep and reduced attention can increase study difficulty, creating further stress.

Mediator Versus Confounder

A mediator sits on the pathway: A affects M, which affects B. A confounder influences both A and B, making their relationship harder to interpret. Knowing the distinction protects against simplistic causal claims.

Feedback Changes the Story

Some effects return to influence their causes. Confidence can increase participation; participation can produce successful experiences; success can build confidence further. Language such as reinforces, amplifies and mitigates helps describe these loops.

  1. What evidence links the variables?
  2. What mechanism is plausible?
  3. Could reverse causation operate?
  4. Could a third factor influence both?
  5. Does the relationship change across groups or time?

  3. Add one possible confounder.
  4. Identify one reinforcing or balancing feedback loop.

Causal vocabulary becomes powerful when it reveals structure instead of simply attaching “because” between two events.
