Expository writing has a different job from narrative writing. It does not primarily ask, “What happened?” It asks, “How does this work?”, “Why does this matter?”, “What causes it?”, “How are these ideas related?” and “What should the reader understand by the end?”
The Secondary 2 Essential 100 Vocabulary contains many words that are especially useful for explanation: analyse, assess, consequence, derive, evaluate, exemplify, fundamental, infer, interpret, significant and validate.

- define — state what something means;
- explain — show how or why;
- illustrate — clarify with an example;
- compare — identify similarities;
- contrast — identify differences;
- analyse — examine parts and relationships;
- evaluate — judge with evidence or criteria;
- conclude — state what follows from the explanation.
Define Before You Develop
If the essay discusses resilience, innovation, bias or sustainability, make sure the working meaning is clear. Expository writing weakens when key terms shift meaning halfway through.
Explain Mechanisms, Not Just Outcomes
Weak: “Exercise is beneficial.”
Stronger: “Regular exercise can enhance cardiovascular fitness, improve sleep and reduce stress, which may in turn support concentration.”
The second sentence names the mechanisms instead of relying on the broad word beneficial.
Useful Explanation Verbs
- contribute;
- influence;
- enhance;
- hinder;
- derive;
- incorporate;
- facilitate;
- illustrate;
- demonstrate;
- indicate.
These verbs are useful because they specify relationships. Influence is weaker than cause; illustrate is not the same as prove.
Use Examples as Evidence, Not Decoration
A strong example exemplifies the point. It should be chosen because it makes the mechanism clearer, not because it is memorable.
Point: resourcefulness matters under constraint.
Example: a team with limited materials adapts its design rather than abandoning the project.
Explanation: the example shows resourcefulness because the team creates an effective response using what is available.
Use Paragraphs to Answer One Question at a Time
A clear expository paragraph can follow:
- claim or topic sentence;
- definition or clarification;
- mechanism;
- example or evidence;
- explanation of significance;
- link forward.
Vocabulary for Significance
Words such as fundamental, significant, predominant, primary, marginal, moderate and substantial help writers distinguish importance and scale. They should be supported, not inserted automatically.
Vocabulary for Evidence
- evidence indicates;
- data suggest;
- the example demonstrates;
- the pattern is evident;
- the finding supports;
- the evidence is insufficient to conclude.
These phrases calibrate certainty. Expository writing becomes more credible when the wording matches the strength of the evidence.
Avoid Empty Formality
“It is an undeniable and fundamentally paramount fact that…” sounds formal but may say very little. Strong exposition prefers direct meaning: “One important reason is…”
Avoid Definition Dumping
A paragraph should not become a dictionary page. Define only the terms necessary for the explanation, then move into relationships and examples.
A Model Paragraph
“Vocabulary growth is cumulative because new words are easier to learn when they connect to existing knowledge. For example, a student who already understands analyse, evaluate and infer can more readily distinguish a new academic verb such as synthesise. The existing semantic network provides comparison points, reducing the amount of entirely new information the learner must construct. This is significant because vocabulary study becomes more efficient as the network becomes richer.”

- Choose one familiar topic.
- Write one sentence defining the central term.
- Explain one mechanism.
- Add one example.
- State why the example matters.
- Replace vague verbs such as does or makes only where a more precise relation exists.
For Parents and Teachers
When a student writes “X is important,” ask “important because what?” When a student writes “X causes Y,” ask “does the evidence show cause or only influence?” These questions improve both vocabulary and reasoning.

Expository Laboratory: Explain the Mechanism, Not Just the Topic
One of the biggest jumps from ordinary school writing to strong expository writing is the move from naming an idea to explaining how it works. “Sleep is important” names a topic. “Insufficient sleep can hinder concentration because attention becomes harder to sustain across demanding tasks” begins to explain a mechanism.
The Five-Layer Explanation Model
- Define: What exactly is the concept?
- Mechanism: What process connects cause and outcome?
- Example: What concrete case makes the mechanism visible?
- Boundary: When might the explanation not apply fully?
- Significance: Why does this relationship matter?
These layers stop a paragraph from becoming a sequence of labels. They also give vocabulary clear jobs. Define, influence, exemplify, qualify, significant are not ornamental academic words; they describe different stages of explanation.
Worked Example: Why Vocabulary Networks Accelerate Learning
Definition: A vocabulary network is a set of connections among words through meaning, contrast, word family, collocation and context.
Mechanism: When a new word enters an existing network, the learner does not begin from zero. Known words provide comparison points and retrieval routes.
Example: A student who already controls analyse, infer, evaluate and justify can place a new word such as synthesise beside familiar thinking operations and ask how its job differs.
Boundary: Connections help only when the learner understands them accurately. A false synonym can make the network more confusing rather than more useful.
Significance: Vocabulary growth can become more efficient over time because new words attach to an increasingly rich system.
Definition Is Not Explanation
“Resilience is the ability to recover after difficulty” defines the concept. It does not explain what helps a system or person recover, how recovery occurs, or what limits resilience. Definitions establish the object of discussion; explanations reveal relationships inside it.
Example Is Not Explanation Either
Suppose a student writes, “Exercise is beneficial. For example, many people go jogging.” The example shows that jogging exists, not why exercise is beneficial. A stronger paragraph connects the example to the mechanism: regular aerobic activity can improve cardiovascular capacity, which may make sustained physical effort easier.
Evidence Strength Changes the Verb

This calibration is useful across English, Science and Humanities. A mature explanation does not pretend every relationship is equally certain.
Explain the Middle of the Chain
Weak explanation: “Long queues cause frustration.”
Resolved explanation: “Long queues can increase frustration because they consume time while leaving people uncertain about how long the wait will continue. Clear updates may reduce this effect by making the delay more predictable.”
The improved version explains the middle: time cost and uncertainty. That middle is often where the real reasoning lives.
Use Boundaries to Prevent Overclaiming
Good explanatory writing often contains a sentence beginning with however, provided that, in some contexts or this effect may be weaker when. Boundaries do not weaken an explanation; they reveal that the writer understands its operating conditions.
Cross-Subject Transfer
- Science: explain a mechanism and distinguish observation from inference.
- Geography: trace interacting causes and consequences.
- History: distinguish contributing factors from single-cause claims.
- English: explain how language choices create tone, implication or persuasion.
The surface vocabulary changes by subject, but the architecture of explanation remains surprisingly stable.
A Paragraph Diagnostic
- Underline the sentence that defines or frames the idea.
- Box the sentence that explains the mechanism.
- Circle the example or evidence.
- Mark the sentence that explains why the evidence matters.
- Add a boundary if the claim is too broad.
- Delete any formal phrase that performs no logical job.
Student Workshop: Explain One Ordinary System
Choose something familiar—a queue, a school timetable, a recommendation system, a study routine or a recycling bin. Explain how it works to someone who has never seen it. Include one definition, one mechanism, one example, one limitation and one consequence. The ordinary topic removes the pressure to sound impressive and makes reasoning visible.
Checkpoint: Could the Reader Draw the Process?
After reading your explanation, could someone sketch the main relationship as a simple flow or diagram? If not, the paragraph may contain information without a clear mechanism. Rewrite until the causal or logical route becomes visible.
