Narrative vs Expository Reading for Incidental Vocabulary: Why Text Type and Working Memory Change What Students Retain

Two students can meet the same unfamiliar word the same number of times and still leave the passage with different amounts of learning.

Incidental vocabulary learning happens when a learner picks up word knowledge while doing something else—usually reading for meaning rather than memorising a list. It is attractive because it resembles real literacy. But “just read more” is too blunt. The structure of the text, the learner’s existing vocabulary and the amount of information that can be held active in working memory all influence what happens to the new word.

This article owns one specific job: to explain why narrative and expository reading can place different demands on incidental vocabulary learning, and how teachers can use that difference without pretending one text type is always superior.

What the 2025 Study Found

Lim and Lee’s 2025 study in Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching examined 46 Korean high-school learners reading one narrative and one expository text containing unfamiliar pseudowords. The researchers measured vocabulary form recognition and meaning recognition immediately and again two days later, while also considering prior vocabulary knowledge and working-memory capacity.

In that study, the narrative text produced stronger longer-term incidental vocabulary gains than the expository text. Prior vocabulary knowledge helped, but working memory showed especially strong relationships with lexical inferencing and retention. Crucially, text type interacted with working memory: the kind of text that supported learning was not independent of the learner.

The result should not be turned into “stories always teach vocabulary better than information texts.” One study with a specific sample, language background and text set cannot support that universal claim. The useful principle is narrower: text structure changes the cognitive route by which an unfamiliar word is interpreted and remembered.

Why Narrative Can Sometimes Help

Narratives often create a chain of people, goals, actions, causes and consequences. A new word can be anchored to an event: who did what, why it mattered, what changed and what happened next. If a character hesitated at the door, looked back, raised a hand, then withdrew it, the learner receives several behavioural clues that converge on uncertainty or reluctance.

This event structure may reduce the number of disconnected details the learner must hold at once. The word becomes part of a scene.

Why Expository Text Can Be Harder—and More Valuable

Expository texts often compress relations. A Science paragraph may introduce permeability, diffusion, concentration gradient and equilibrium within a few sentences. A History passage may move across causes, institutions and periods without a single protagonist carrying the reader through the sequence.

That density can increase working-memory demand. But it also teaches the vocabulary of formal knowledge. Students cannot avoid expository text simply because narratives are easier to remember. They need scaffolds that help them extract the relation structure.

The Mechanism: Working Memory Carries the Inference

To infer an unfamiliar word, a reader may need to hold the sentence, connect it to an earlier idea, suppress an implausible interpretation and test a new meaning against the next sentence. Working memory supports that temporary workspace.

When the text is dense, the learner may spend so much capacity maintaining the passage that little remains for the new word. The word is recognised as “something important” but never receives a stable meaning. This is one reason rereading can feel familiar without producing ownership.

Diagnosis Before Prescription

“The student understands the story but does not remember the new words.”

Diagnosis: comprehension of events may be strong while lexical attention is weak. Prescription: after reading, ask for two or three target words, reconstruct the scene that supported each meaning, then retrieve them later without the passage.

“The student collapses in Science or Humanities passages.”

Diagnosis: the problem may be conceptual density rather than general reading weakness. Prescription: break the paragraph into relations—definition, cause, contrast, example, sequence—and attach each new term to one relation.

“The student keeps rereading but still cannot infer the word.”

Diagnosis: repeated exposure is occurring without a usable hypothesis. Prescription: prompt one discriminating question: What kind of thing could this word be here—action, quality, process, object, cause or result?

A Better Reading Routine: Notice → Infer → Verify → Retrieve

  1. Notice: mark only a small number of high-value unfamiliar words.
  2. Infer: use grammar, local context and the wider passage to propose a meaning.
  3. Explain: identify which clue supported the proposal.
  4. Verify: check a reliable dictionary, glossary or teacher explanation.
  5. Reconnect: place the word back into the passage and ask what role it plays.
  6. Retrieve: test the word later without the original sentence.
  7. Transfer: use it in a different text type.

Narrative-to-Expository Transfer

A useful teaching move is to let a concrete narrative introduce the concept, then move the same vocabulary into an expository explanation. A story about a puddle disappearing can establish evaporation; a Science paragraph can then define particle movement and energy transfer. A story about ration cards can establish scarcity; an Economics or History passage can later formalise allocation and constraints.

This is not simplification for its own sake. It creates an episodic anchor before abstraction.

Singapore Subject Transfer

For Singapore students, this distinction matters across the curriculum. English comprehension includes narrative and informational texts. Science and Humanities increasingly require expository reading. General Paper requires dense argumentative prose. A learner who performs well in stories but weakly in academic passages may not have “poor vocabulary” in a single undifferentiated sense. The learner may need stronger handling of conceptual density, sentence relations and working-memory load.

Teachers can therefore vary the route: first establish a word in a lower-load context, then move it into the subject where it must ultimately function.

What the Evidence Does Not Say

  • It does not show that narrative is always better than expository text.
  • It does not show that students with lower working-memory capacity cannot learn from dense texts.
  • It does not show that incidental learning can replace explicit vocabulary instruction.
  • It does show why learner characteristics and text characteristics should be considered together.
