“There is a problem and we need a solution” is a useful beginning, but strong expository writing asks more: What exactly is the problem? Who experiences it? What causes it? What are the consequences? Which response is feasible? What trade-offs remain?

Name the Problem Precisely
“Transport is bad” is too broad. Is the problem congestion, unreliability, insufficient capacity, high cost, poor accessibility or long travel time? Different diagnoses require different solutions.

Each word names a different failure. Obsolete means outdated because something newer has replaced it; inefficient means resources are used poorly; inadequate means the standard or amount is not enough.

A solution should describe an action or mechanism, not just a wish.
Feasibility Matters
A solution can be desirable but infeasible. Ask whether there is sufficient time, funding, authority, expertise and infrastructure.
“Build a new facility immediately” may be beneficial in theory but financially or logistically infeasible. “Extend operating hours using existing space” may be more feasible but less transformative.

A Model Problem–Solution Chain
Problem: students receive contradictory instructions for a project.
Cause: guidelines are distributed through several channels without one canonical version.
Consequence: confusion increases and teachers spend additional time correcting misunderstandings.
Solution: consolidate instructions into one shared document and require updates to be reflected there.
Evaluation: the solution is feasible because it uses existing tools, but it depends on consistent staff practice.
Avoid Solution Jumping
If the diagnosis is vague, the solution may target the wrong problem. “More education” does not solve every issue. “More technology” does not solve every inefficiency. Define the failure first.
Avoid Universal Claims
A solution may work under specific conditions. Use qualifiers such as may, in some contexts, provided that, when, if to preserve realistic scope.
A Practice Routine
- Name one problem precisely.
- Identify two causes.
- State one direct and one indirect consequence.
- Propose two solutions.
- Compare feasibility.
- Identify one trade-off.
- Choose and justify the stronger option.

Problem-Solving Laboratory: Diagnose Before You Prescribe
A weak problem-solution essay often begins with a solution the writer already likes and then searches for a problem that makes it look useful. Strong reasoning works in the opposite direction. First identify the failure precisely. Then trace its causes. Only after the diagnosis is stable should possible interventions be compared.
The Diagnostic Stack
- Symptom: What visible problem is occurring?
- Mechanism: What process produces it?
- Root condition: What allows the mechanism to persist?
- Affected group: Who experiences the cost, and how?
- Constraint: What limits the available response?
Consider “students submit work late.” That is a symptom, not yet a diagnosis. Causes might include unclear deadlines, overloaded schedules, weak planning, technical access or low motivation. Each cause implies a different response. A reminder system cannot solve a workload problem; a new app cannot repair ambiguous instructions by itself.
Worked Example: Congestion at a School Pick-Up Point
Symptom: Vehicles queue and movement becomes congested at dismissal.
Possible mechanisms: many vehicles arrive within the same narrow time window; stopping points are limited; pedestrians cross the same route; drivers wait for students who are not ready.
Possible interventions: stagger dismissal times, create clearer pick-up zones, improve pedestrian separation, or reduce waiting through better coordination.
Evaluation: each intervention addresses a different mechanism. Staggering may reduce peak demand but complicate schedules. Additional zones may improve flow but require physical space. Better communication may be highly feasible but have limited effect if capacity itself is insufficient.
The point is not to identify one universally correct solution. It is to match intervention to diagnosed cause.
Immediate Fixes vs Structural Solutions

This distinction helps students avoid describing every response as a “solution.” Some actions reduce consequences without removing the underlying cause, and that may still be worthwhile.
Feasibility Has Several Dimensions
- financial: can the cost be sustained?
- technical: can it actually be built or operated?
- administrative: who has authority and capacity to implement it?
- social: will people understand, accept or comply with it?
- temporal: can it happen within the required time?
A proposal can be feasible on one dimension and weak on another. This is why “possible” is often too broad for serious problem-solving.
Unintended Consequences Matter
A response may solve one problem while creating another. Extending opening hours can improve access but increase staffing cost. Restricting vehicle access can reduce congestion but make journeys harder for some users. A world-class solution paragraph therefore asks not only “Does it work?” but “What else changes when we do this?”
Prioritise, Do Not Merely List
If three solutions are possible, compare them by impact, feasibility, speed, fairness and reversibility. Then justify which should come first. A good response can also combine measures: a feasible short-term mitigation while a more structural solution is developed.
The Intervention-Match Test
- Write the exact cause beside the proposed solution.
- Explain how the solution changes that cause or mechanism.
- Identify the main constraint.
- Predict one unintended consequence.
- State what evidence would show whether the intervention worked.
If the first two steps cannot be completed clearly, the proposed solution may be fashionable, attractive or well-intentioned without actually addressing the diagnosed failure.
Cross-Subject Transfer
This architecture travels. Science asks how to control a variable or reduce an error source. Geography asks how communities respond to environmental constraints. Humanities asks how policies address social problems. English asks students to explain and evaluate the proposed responses. Precise vocabulary makes the common reasoning structure visible.
Checkpoint: Can You Explain Why This Solution Should Work?
Do not finish at “This will help.” Write the mechanism. Then ask what would make the solution fail. A response that survives both questions is much closer to a defensible recommendation.
