Vocabulary for Cause, Contrast, Addition and Consequence in Secondary 2 Writing

Four relationships organise a large amount of school writing: one idea causes another, contrasts with another, adds to another, or follows as a consequence.

This article complements the Secondary 2 Essential 100 Vocabulary by turning relationship words into a deliberate writing system.

Cause

  • because;
  • since;
  • due to;
  • contributes to;
  • influences;
  • provokes.

Choose according to strength. Contributes to leaves room for other causes; causes is stronger.

Contrast

  • however;
  • whereas;
  • unlike;
  • in contrast;
  • although;
  • despite.

Contrast can show difference or an unexpected outcome. “Although the plan was ambitious, it remained feasible” uses concession: feasibility survives despite a possible obstacle.

Addition

  • also;
  • furthermore;
  • in addition;
  • another factor;
  • similarly.

Addition is useful when the second idea extends the same line of reasoning. Do not use furthermore when the next sentence actually contradicts the previous one.

Consequence

  • therefore;
  • consequently;
  • as a result;
  • thus;
  • this led to;
  • the consequence was.

Consequence language should preserve uncertainty where necessary: “may therefore lead to” is different from “therefore leads to.”

One Topic, Four Relationships

Topic: public transport.

  • Cause: “Service disruptions can increase waiting times.”
  • Contrast: “Trains are efficient during normal operation; however, disruptions can affect many commuters at once.”
  • Addition: “In addition, clear updates can reduce uncertainty.”
  • Consequence: “Therefore, communication quality becomes important during delays.”

Relationship Vocabulary Beyond Connectors

Verbs such as hinder, enhance, influence, diminish, correlate and provoke can express logical relationships inside the sentence itself, reducing dependence on visible connectors.

Avoid Logical Mismatch

If the second sentence is an example, do not introduce it with therefore. If it is a result, do not introduce it with for example. Connector choice is reasoning choice.

Practice Routine

  1. Write four sentences about one topic.
  2. Label each relationship.
  3. Add a connector or relationship verb.
  4. Swap one connector deliberately and notice how meaning changes.
  5. Restore the accurate relationship.

Relationship Words Are Thinking Tools

Use the Secondary 2 Essential 100 as a foundation, then make cause, contrast, addition and consequence explicit. The reader should never have to guess how one major idea connects to the next.

Relationship Laboratory: Change One Connector, Change the Thought

Cause, contrast, addition and consequence are not merely four groups of linking words. They are four different ways to organise reality. If a student changes because to although, the sentence no longer makes the same claim. Relationship vocabulary deserves the same precision as content vocabulary.

The Four-Relationship Matrix

RelationshipQuestionTypical move
causeWhy did this happen?connect factor to effect
contrastHow does this differ or violate expectation?turn the direction
additionWhat else supports or extends the same line?increase the evidence or scope
consequenceWhat follows from what has been established?move from premise to result

Worked Transformation

Base ideas: “The programme costs more. It remains feasible.”

  • Contrast: “Although the programme costs more, it remains feasible.”
  • Cause: “The programme remains feasible because existing facilities reduce implementation costs.”
  • Addition: “The programme costs more; in addition, it requires specialist training.”
  • Consequence: “The programme requires substantial specialist training; therefore, implementation will take longer.”

The vocabulary does not merely smooth the sentences. It determines the logical claim.

Concession Is a Special Kind of Contrast

Although, despite and even though usually signal that one fact might have led us to expect a different outcome. “Although the evidence was limited, the committee approved a small pilot” tells the reader that limited evidence created an obstacle but did not stop the action.

Addition Should Add Weight, Not Repeat

Weak addition repeats the same point in new words. Strong addition contributes a different reason, example or dimension. “The plan is expensive. Furthermore, it costs a lot” adds no information. “The plan is expensive. Furthermore, implementation requires six months of staff training” genuinely extends the case.

Consequence Needs an Established Premise

Therefore is powerful because it tells the reader that the conclusion follows. If the previous sentences do not justify the conclusion, the connector cannot repair the gap. “Many students enjoy music. Therefore, music lessons improve mathematics” contains a logical jump regardless of how formal the transition sounds.

Relationship Verbs Can Replace Connectors

“Limited funding hindered expansion” carries cause and effect within the verb. “The benefits outweighed the costs” carries comparison and evaluation. “The new evidence reinforced the earlier finding” carries addition. Learning relational verbs creates more varied and compact prose.

The Relationship Rewrite Exercise

  1. Write two simple factual sentences.
  2. Connect them once by addition.
  3. Rewrite them so they express contrast.
  4. Create a plausible cause relationship by adding necessary information.
  5. Create a consequence that genuinely follows.
  6. Explain what new claim each version makes.

Checkpoint: Is the Relationship True?

Before choosing a transition, state the relationship in plain language: “This is a reason,” “this is a contrast,” “this adds a separate point,” or “this follows from the evidence.” Then choose the wording. Logic first; connector second.
