There is a moment in the Voynich Manuscript when the plants disappear and the book seems to enter another physics.
Small human figures stand in green pools.
Others sit inside rounded containers.
Tubes descend from margins, split, bend and enter chambers.
Blue and green areas look like liquid.
Some figures seem to touch, argue, hold objects, emerge from openings or stand beneath canopies.
A few animal-like forms appear.
Text continues through the scenes as if the writer understood exactly what all of this meant.
We do not.
This is Quire 13, the group of folios conventionally called the biological or balneological section.
Both labels are useful.
Both are dangerous.
“Biological” encourages anatomy, reproduction and body systems.
“Balneological” encourages baths, therapeutic waters and medical bathing.
The drawings can support pieces of both stories.
They can also support several others.
The figures are clearly doing something. The difficult part is deciding what kind of “doing” the diagram represents.
That is where serious reading begins.
Quick Read
One-sentence answer: Quire 13 is a physically coherent gathering of folios 75–84 dominated by mostly female human figures interacting with pools, containers and tube-like structures alongside extensive Currier-B text, and although medieval therapeutic-bath literature makes balneological interpretation historically plausible, the visual system does not yet establish whether it represents literal bathing, anatomy, reproduction, medical processes, natural waters, symbolic flows or a hybrid technical model.
- Quire 13 contains the manuscript’s complete major group of so-called biological or balneological pages.
- It consists of five bifolia rather than the more usual four-bifolium pattern seen in several other gatherings.
- The surviving folios are numbered 75 through 84.
- Folio 76r is text-only, demonstrating that the quire’s textual programme is not dependent on illustration on every page.

- Pools are coloured blue or green in different places, but colour should not automatically be read as literal water chemistry or body fluid.

- Topology—what connects to what—is more secure than assuming what flows through the connection.
- Short labels occur near some figures and tube structures while long paragraphs occupy other areas.
- Most Quire 13 text is conventionally classified as Currier B or strongly B-like.
- The human figures resemble those on the zodiac pages enough to justify comparison, but not enough to prove identical semantic roles.
- Medieval and fifteenth-century medical literature contains genuine treatises on baths and therapeutic waters, so balneology was a real technical domain rather than a modern fantasy.
- Known bath literature usually gives us readable place, disease, regimen and therapeutic information; Voynich gives us a far more abstract and networked visual system.
- Gynaecological and reproductive interpretations are plausible because of the predominance of female forms, but sexed-looking figures do not by themselves prove pregnancy, menstruation or reproductive anatomy.
- A strong theory must explain the whole quire: pools, tubes, figures, labels, animals, colours, page-to-page recurrence, text distribution and physical bifolium structure.
The quire is not confusing because nothing is organised.
It is confusing because the organisation is obvious and the legend is gone.
Quire 13 Is a Physical Unit Before It Is a Semantic Section
One reason Quire 13 deserves its own article is that the visual family aligns unusually well with a physical gathering.
The pages from folio 75 through 84 are gathered together as one quire.
That gives the modern “biological” or “balneological” label more physical grounding than some other section labels.
But physical coherence and semantic coherence remain different questions.
A quire can be produced as a batch.
It can contain one topic.
It can contain several related topics.
It can contain material copied from more than one source.
The important fact is that the manuscript maker gave this family a physical home.
That strengthens the proposition that the pages form a meaningful production unit.
It does not yet tell us what title the maker would have put on the unit.
Five Bifolia Means the Quire Was Built Deliberately
A quire is not an abstract set of page numbers.
It is a stack of folded physical sheets.
Quire 13 contains five bifolia.
Each bifolium joins two leaves physically.
This means the quire can be analysed at two scales:
- page-level visual scenes;
- bifolium-level production relationships.
If two distant-looking folios occupy opposite halves of one sheet, that can matter more to production history than their current page adjacency.
A theory that claims a sequential process from page 75 to page 84 should therefore survive the quire’s physical structure.
Reading order is not automatically production order.
And production order is not automatically process order.
That distinction prevents a row of baths from becoming a treatment sequence simply because the folio numbers increase.
Folio 76r Is a Useful Interruption
One page in the quire contains only text.
That is easy to ignore because the illustrated pages are so spectacular.
It should not be ignored.
If Quire 13 were purely a visual atlas, a text-only page needs explanation.
Perhaps the text continues an entry.
Perhaps it introduces a new submodule.
Perhaps an illustration was never added.
Perhaps the intended information sometimes requires no picture.
The blank visual field therefore stops us from defining the section only by its pictures.
The text is not secondary decoration around a bath book.
It has enough autonomy to occupy a page alone.
“Nymph” Is a Nickname, Not an Identification
The small human figures are often called nymphs.
The word is charming.
It is also semantically expensive.
A nymph belongs to mythology.
These figures may be mythological.
They may be patients.
They may be personifications.
They may represent body parts, states, substances, stars, individuals or abstract units.
We do not know.
So in careful description, “human figure” is safer.
Even “female figure” needs some caution because sex is inferred from stylised bodies and hair rather than read from a caption.
The visual impression is strong.
The semantic category remains open.
Why So Many Female-Looking Figures?
This is one of the hardest facts for a neutral theory to ignore.
The human figures appear predominantly feminine.
That can support several families of interpretation.
- women’s health;
- gynaecology;
- pregnancy and reproduction;
- bathing customs involving women;
- personifications conventionally rendered as female;
- generic human figures drawn using one preferred body type;
- astrological or cosmological entities represented anthropomorphically.
The first three are especially seductive because medicine and women’s health can coexist historically with herbs, baths and astrology.
But a demographic-looking visual pattern does not prove a medical specialty.
A strong reproductive theory must explain the tubes, pools, labels and page architecture in anatomically or procedurally consistent ways.
“Mostly women” is a constraint.
It is not a diagnosis.
The Pools Look Like Water—Until We Ask What “Like” Means
Blue and green bounded regions are naturally read as pools.
Figures stand inside them.
Tubes enter or leave them.
The label “balneological” therefore makes immediate visual sense.
But a bounded coloured field can represent more than literal water.
- bath water;
- thermal spring;
- body fluid;
- container contents;
- cloud or vapour;
- conceptual region;
- process state;
- symbolic medium.
We need a way to discriminate.
Literal water should behave spatially like water.
Body-fluid models should correspond to body-like structures.
Process-state models should recur with stable transformations.
Colour gives us a variable.
The whole system must tell us what the variable means.
Green and Blue Should Not Be Translated Too Quickly
Some pools are green.
Some are blue.
A theory can immediately assign meaning.
Blue = clean water.
Green = herbal infusion.
Or green = bile.
Or green = mineral water.
Or green = one stage of a process.
Each interpretation can sound convincing because colour is visually powerful.
A colour code becomes evidence only when it predicts something else.
Do green pools have different textual vocabulary?
Different figure counts?
Different connector types?
Different positions in the quire?
Until a stable correlation appears, green and blue remain painted classes whose exact semantics are unknown.
Tubes Establish Connection Before They Establish Flow
The tube-like forms are perhaps the quire’s most important structural feature.
They bend around margins.
They connect pools.
They end in openings.
Figures stand on or near them.
Modern viewers naturally call them pipes.
A pipe carries material.
That noun immediately implies flow.
So it is useful to step back and call them connectors until direction is demonstrated.
Topology gives us secure questions.
- Which regions connect?
- Which connectors branch?
- Which terminate?
- Which touch figures?
- Which enter coloured areas?
- Which forms recur on other pages?
Only after topology is mapped should we ask what moves through the network—if anything.
Connection is evidence.
Flow is interpretation.
A Hydraulic Interpretation Is Attractive Because the Network Looks Physical
If the tubes are literal conduits and the pools are literal liquids, Quire 13 begins to look hydraulic.
Water enters.
Water exits.
People occupy baths.
Different chambers might represent different temperatures or mineral waters.
This can fit therapeutic bathing.
But a hydraulic model must obey hydraulic logic.
- Is direction visible?
- Do channels have plausible sources and outlets?
- Do reservoirs connect consistently?
- Does gravity matter?
- Do repeated tube forms carry stable functions?
- Does text distinguish water classes or operations?
If the network ignores all physical flow constraints, literal plumbing becomes weaker.
The same geometry might then be diagrammatic rather than engineering-realistic.
Balneology Was a Real Medieval Medical Domain
The word “balneological” should not be dismissed simply because it sounds like a convenient modern nickname.
Medieval and fifteenth-century physicians genuinely wrote about therapeutic baths and mineral waters.
Biblissima records a remarkable manuscript, Paris BnF NAL 211, containing a collection of bath-related medical texts.
Among them are works associated with Giovanni Michele Savonarola, Hugolin of Montecatini, Gentile Gentili, Petrus de Tussignano and others.
Savonarola’s De balneis et thermis naturalibus omnibus Italiae belongs to the intellectual world of the fifteenth century.
Peter of Eboli’s earlier De Balneis Puteolanis describes the therapeutic waters of the Pozzuoli region and circulated in illustrated manuscripts.
This proves something useful:
medical baths were sufficiently important to generate specialised texts, collections and illustrations.
Therefore a bathing or therapeutic-water interpretation of Voynich is historically plausible.
Plausibility is not identification.
Known Bath Texts Make Voynich Look More Strange, Not Less
Historical controls do not only make hypotheses more plausible.
They show us what a known version of the domain looks like.
A medical bath text can identify a place.
Describe water properties.
List conditions treated.
Advise season, duration or regimen.
Show people bathing.
Voynich Quire 13 instead gives us a highly abstract connected visual network.
The figures may bathe, but the tubes and compartments often look more schematic than ordinary bath architecture.
This means the historical comparator cuts both ways.
It validates the domain.
It also raises the question of why Voynich represents the domain so differently if literal balneology is the answer.
A Fifteenth-Century Bath Manuscript Can Be Illustrated Without Looking Like Quire 13
The University of Edinburgh preserves a fifteenth-century manuscript of Peter of Eboli’s De balneis Puteolanis with half-page illustrations accompanying the text.
This matters because illustration is not itself diagnostic.
Two medical bath manuscripts can represent the same broad domain using very different visual grammars.
Therefore a failure to find an exact image match does not eliminate balneology.
But neither does the existence of illustrated bath books prove it.
The stronger question is functional:
Does the Voynich visual grammar behave like a system for organising therapeutic waters or bathing procedures?
That question can be tested through recurrence, topology, labels and textual differentiation.
Herbs, Baths and Women’s Questions Could Coexist Historically
British Library Harley MS 2375 gives another useful historical control.
Its fifteenth-century contents include herbal material, references to bathing, questions concerning women, medical recipes and broader medical-astrological material.
This is important because Voynich theories often look implausible when judged by modern departmental boundaries.
Botany.
Women’s medicine.
Baths.
Astrology.
Recipes.
These could share a practical medical manuscript world.
Again, this does not prove Voynich is such a compendium.
It removes one bad objection:
those subjects would never belong together.
Historically, they could.
Whether Voynich connects them must still be shown internally.
The Anatomy Hypothesis Starts With Tubes and Bodies
Another influential family of interpretations treats Quire 13 as anatomical or physiological.
The tubes become ducts, vessels, intestines, reproductive channels or other internal structures.
Pools become organs, cavities or body fluids.
Human figures may personify internal states or stand inside enlarged anatomical spaces.
This has a conceptual advantage.
It explains why human figures coexist with impossible-looking “plumbing”.
The plumbing may not be external architecture at all.
But an anatomical theory needs anatomical constraints.
- Do connections correspond to known bodily relationships?
- Are repeated structures consistently identifiable?
- Is orientation meaningful?
- Does the same organ-like form recur with the same textual behaviour?
- Do the figures represent scale changes coherently?
Without repeated anatomical mapping, the hypothesis can become another way to rename ambiguous tubes.
Reproductive Anatomy Is Attractive Because of the Figures
The predominance of female-looking figures makes reproductive interpretations especially persistent.
Wombs.
Fallopian-like tubes.
Menstrual cycles.
Pregnancy.
Fertility.
These are plausible subjects in medieval medicine.
Yet the images do not provide a stable modern anatomical diagram.
A reproductive theory must therefore explain why forms depart so radically from ordinary anatomical representation.
Maybe medieval anatomy used different schemata.
Maybe the diagrams are functional rather than spatial.
Maybe the figures are patients rather than anatomy.
All remain available.
Female-looking bodies make reproduction worth testing.
They do not make it the default answer.
A Process Diagram Can Use Human Figures as State Markers
There is another possibility that sits between literal bodies and literal baths.
The figures may mark states in a process.
A person in one pool may represent one condition.
A person in another pool another condition.
Tubes may express transitions.
Colour may classify stages.
This would make the figures symbolic participants rather than literal tiny bathers.
But a process model needs direction and state change.
Does the same visual sequence recur?
Are there identifiable inputs and outputs?
Do labels track stages?
Without those, “process” can become as vague as “symbolic”.
A useful abstraction must still produce predictions.
The Four-Elements Interpretation Shows How Fast Symbols Can Multiply
On some pages, openings, flows and coloured forms have been compared with elemental systems such as air, water, fire and earth.
Such comparisons are historically possible.
Medieval natural philosophy used elemental categories extensively.
But elemental interpretation has a particular danger.
Almost any four contrasting forms can be assigned four elements after the fact.
A strong elemental model would need stable visual signatures.
Fire-like markers should recur with one class.
Water-like markers with another.
Textual associations should support the distinctions.
The model should predict another four-part arrangement elsewhere.
Historical possibility is easy.
Systematic recurrence is harder—and more valuable.
Animals Are a Warning Against One-Silhouette History
A few animal-like forms appear in Quire 13.
Because they are ambiguous, they have attracted spectacular identifications.
One famous example has been compared with an armadillo.
That identification would carry enormous chronological and geographic implications.
Yet alternative Old World animal drawings can produce similar silhouettes.
This is exactly why one strange animal cannot rewrite the manuscript’s history by resemblance alone.
A high-consequence identification needs a high evidence threshold.
Multiple diagnostic features.
Historical plausibility.
Independent confirmation.
The quire teaches the same lesson as the herbal roots:
ambiguous shapes become most dangerous when the proposed identification is historically exciting.
Crowns, Hair and Headgear May Be Classification Features
Some figures appear to have elaborate hair, caps, crowns or head-like ornaments.
These details are easy to treat as decoration.
They may be classificatory.
If headgear varies systematically, it could encode:
- status;
- category;
- stage;
- identity;
- celestial association;
- or merely stylistic variety.
The useful research move is to treat the feature as a variable before treating it as a crown.
Does the form recur?
Does it correlate with a pool colour?
A text label?
A zodiac figure type?
Repeated correlation can turn ornament into evidence.
One elaborate head shape cannot.
Pairing and Grouping May Matter More Than Individual Identity
Some figures appear in pairs or clusters.
Modern viewers naturally turn pairings into social stories.
Two women talking.
Two patients.
Mother and daughter.
Twins.
Again, perhaps.
But grouping can encode non-social information.
Two figures can mark a count.
A comparison.
A transformation from one state to another.
A pair of categories.
So the stable unit may be the group rather than the person.
A strong theory should explain why the figures are grouped the way they are, not merely assign biographies to them.
Labels Near Figures and Tubes Create a Classification Problem
Some Quire 13 pages contain short labels near figures, pools or tube structures in addition to longer blocks of text.
This creates at least two textual roles on one page.
Running text may explain, describe or instruct.
Labels may identify components.
But “identify” still leaves options.
- person name;
- body part;
- bath name;
- water type;
- process stage;
- code;
- cross-reference.
This is where cross-manuscript recurrence becomes useful.
If the same short form labels a comparable structure elsewhere, identity becomes more plausible.
If it appears across unrelated visual contexts, perhaps the form has a more general linguistic or structural role.
Labels should therefore be studied as a network, not as isolated miniature translations.
Currier B Is One of Quire 13’s Strongest Textual Facts
Most of Quire 13 belongs strongly to the textual regime conventionally called Currier B.
This matters because the quire is visually distinctive and textually distinctive at the same time.
That correlation invites semantic interpretation.
B is the language of bathing or the body.
Too fast.
B also occurs outside Quire 13.
And Currier regime may track scribe, source, chronology, encoding procedure or register as well as topic.
The strong conclusion is:
Quire 13 was produced under a textual state closely associated with Currier B.
The hidden cause of that association remains open.
A Visual Section and a Textual Regime Can Reinforce Each Other Without Being Identical
This is a subtle but important point.
Suppose Quire 13 has a distinct topic.
Topic can change vocabulary.
Suppose it was also copied by a particular writer.
Writer can change spelling or glyph habits.
Suppose the source used a particular notation.
Source can change token distribution.
The resulting Currier-B profile may therefore reflect several variables at once.
This explains why a strong visual-text correlation does not immediately identify the causal variable.
Correlation can be real and multicausal.
Voynich repeatedly teaches us that one visible partition may project several hidden partitions together.
The Zodiac Similarity Is Strong Enough to Ask About—Not Strong Enough to Answer With
Small female-looking figures appear prominently in both zodiac pages and Quire 13.
This cross-section visual vocabulary is unlikely to be irrelevant to the manuscript’s artistic system.
But what does it mean?
Perhaps zodiac figures are people and Quire 13 figures are the same class of people under treatment.
Perhaps both are personifications.
Perhaps the illustrator simply uses the same human template everywhere.
The key is independent linkage.
Do the same labels recur?
Do figure attributes correspond?
Do counts align?
Does one page family predict another?
Visual similarity opens the investigation.
Cross-prediction decides whether the semantic bridge is real.
The Medical Master-Pipeline Is Still Too Clean
Quire 13 is the middle of one of the manuscript’s most attractive grand stories.
Plant → ingredient.
Ingredient → vessel.
Vessel → treatment.
Treatment → body.
Zodiac → timing.
Recipe → final instruction.
Quire 13 easily becomes “treatment” or “body”.
The entire book then appears to run like a medical operating system.
The retained evidence does not justify that total architecture as established meaning.
The physical sections do not create one guaranteed operational order.
The text remains undeciphered.
Visual recurrence is suggestive rather than decisive.
Local medical relationships remain worth testing.
The grand pipeline remains a model, not a result.
A Literal Bath and a Metaphorical Bath Can Share the Same Picture
This is another underdetermination problem.
A person standing in water can literally be bathing.
The same visual can represent purification.
Transformation.
Immersion in a substance.
A body fluid.
A stage of a process.
So even if the painter intentionally makes a scene look bath-like, literal bathing is not guaranteed.
Historical diagrams frequently use embodied scenes to represent abstractions.
The discriminator must come from the rest of the system.
Literal baths should connect to real bath practices.
Symbolic baths should show consistent symbolic transformations.
The same image can begin both hypotheses.
Only wider evidence can finish one.
Text Placement May Tell Us Which Visual Units Are Addressable
Long paragraphs and short labels coexist on these pages.
This creates a useful information-design clue.
A component with its own label may be independently addressable.
A pool.
A tube.
A figure.
If labels consistently attach to one class of component, the class becomes stronger.
If labels occur opportunistically, their function may be different.
The relationship between labelled and unlabelled components therefore matters more than any single proposed translation.
Before asking what a label means, ask what kinds of things receive labels.
Document architecture can reveal ontology before vocabulary.
Figure Position May Be More Important Than Figure Appearance
A figure at the top of a tube may be doing a different job from a figure inside a pool.
A figure at a junction may mark a transition.
A figure at an endpoint may mark an outcome.
A pair inside one compartment may represent a relationship.
This suggests a shift in analysis.
Do not begin by classifying hairstyles.
Begin by classifying network position.
Then ask whether appearance varies with position.
If it does, the figure may encode state or role.
If it does not, the figure may be a generic human unit.
Topology can reveal function that portrait-like reading misses.
The Page May Be a Diagram of Relations, Not a Scene
This may be the most important conceptual correction.
A scene depicts an event in a place.
A diagram uses images to organise relations.
Quire 13 may look scenic because people appear in coloured spaces.
But the impossible scale, repeated connectors and compartmental structure can make diagrammatic reading more productive.
If it is a diagram, a tiny woman need not literally be tiny.
A pool need not literally be a pool.
A tube need not be plumbing.
The images may be symbols in a relational grammar.
This does not solve the page.
It changes the target from “what scene is happening?” to “what relation is being encoded?”
A Diagrammatic Reading Must Still Respect Historical Representation
“Diagram” should not become a universal rescue.
If every impossible-looking feature is declared symbolic, the theory cannot lose.
A strong diagrammatic model should identify a grammar.
- What does a pool-shaped container do?
- What does a narrow connector do?
- What does a human figure do?
- What changes when colour changes?
- What changes when two figures share one region?
- Which motifs recur with the same relationships?
The rules should remain stable from page to page.
A diagrammatic theory becomes useful when it predicts an unseen page.
Without stable grammar, “symbolic” is just another word for unknown.
The Quire May Be Multiscale
At page scale, we see pools and figures.
At local scale, we see connectors, openings, objects and labels.
At quire scale, repeated motifs form a family.
At manuscript scale, human figures, stars, labels and container-like structures connect outward to other sections.
A good explanation should remain coherent across these zoom levels.
An anatomical theory that explains one tube but not the quire architecture is incomplete.
A bath theory that explains the pools but not the figure-label system is incomplete.
A zodiac-medical theory that explains female figures but not the hydraulic topology is incomplete.
Cross-scale consistency is one of the best filters for grand Voynich interpretations.
What Survived From Our Quire 13 Work
- Quire 13 is a genuine physical and visual unit.
- The human-figure vocabulary is systematic enough to matter.
- Pool-like regions form recurring bounded categories rather than random colour patches.
- Tubes and connectors encode real relationships among regions.
- Topology is more secure than proposed flow substance.
- Long text and labels have different page roles.
- Currier-B association is strong and must be explained by any serious model.
- Visual links to zodiac figures justify cross-section comparison.
- Medieval balneology is historically real and close enough in period to remain a serious comparator domain.
- Women’s medicine, bathing, herbs, recipes and astrology could coexist in known fifteenth-century medical worlds.
- No single literal-bath, anatomy, reproductive or hydraulic model yet explains the entire quire strongly enough to become established meaning.
- The most durable public description is a human-centred relational system involving contained regions and connectors.
That is not a retreat into vagueness.
It is the highest-resolution description that survives without forcing the legend.
What Did Not Survive as Established Knowledge
- A proof that every coloured region is literal bath water.
- A proof that green and blue encode specific fluids or treatments.
- A decoded hydraulic direction system.
- A complete anatomical map.
- A proven reproductive tract diagram.
- A proof that all figures are women, patients or bathers.
- A proof that zodiac figures and Quire 13 figures are the same semantic class.
- A demonstrated elemental system.
- A proven medical-treatment sequence across the folios.
- A proven link from herbs → bath → zodiac → recipe as one operational pipeline.
These remain research hypotheses.
Some are stronger than others.
None should be hidden behind the modern section label.
A Better Quire 13 Analysis
1. Start with physical structure
Map the five bifolia and preserve the difference between page order and sheet relationships.
2. Classify visual units neutrally
Human figure, bounded region, connector, opening, container-like form, animal-like form, label.
3. Map topology
Record what touches what before deciding what flows.
4. Treat colour as a variable
Ask what else changes with green or blue rather than naming the substance immediately.
5. Separate labels from running text
Their textual jobs may differ.
6. Compare historical domains
Bath medicine, anatomy, women’s medicine, natural philosophy and technical diagrams all provide different controls.
7. Require cross-page prediction
A proposed function for one tube type should predict another tube of the same type.
8. Connect outward only after local grammar stabilises
Then test relationships to zodiac figures, pharmaceutical fragments and other manuscript systems.
This order makes it harder for the whole-book theory to dictate what every local object must mean.
What Would Make a Balneological Theory Strong?
- It identifies recurring bath or water structures under stable rules.
- It explains why figures occupy particular pools or containers.
- It explains tube topology as a plausible water or therapeutic system.
- It gives colour differences a repeatable interpretation.
- It explains labels as bath names, water types, procedures or another consistent category.
- It accounts for the text-only folio.
- It matches historically appropriate bath literature without requiring false provenance.
- It predicts unseen page structure.
- It explains Currier-B association.
- It distinguishes itself from anatomical and process-diagram models.
The historical existence of balneology satisfies only one item on that list.
The Voynich pages must satisfy the rest.
What Would Make an Anatomical Theory Strong?
- Repeated structures map consistently to anatomical entities.
- Connections preserve plausible bodily relationships.
- Orientation or body-region logic can be recovered.
- Female-figure prevalence receives a coherent explanation.
- Colours or contained regions correspond to stable physiological categories.
- Text labels predict anatomy on pages not used to create the mapping.
- The model explains why medieval representation differs from ordinary anatomical diagrams.
- The same anatomical grammar survives across the quire.

It is the physical gathering containing folios 75–84 of the Voynich Manuscript and the complete major group of pages conventionally called biological or balneological.
Are the figures women?

Are they bathing?
