Gradable and Scalar Adjectives in English Vocabulary: Why “Very Tall” Works but “Completely Tall” Does Not

Some adjectives behave naturally with **very**: > very tall > very cold > very expensive > very difficult Others sound strange: > *very dead > *very unique > *very married And some adjectives prefer a different kind of intensifier: > completely full > absolutely certain > totally empty but not normally: > *completely tall > *absolutely long The difference is not a random list of collocations. It reflects how English adjectives organise **degrees** and **scales**. A word such as **tall** places something somewhere on a height scale. There is no built-in maximum point called “completely tall”. A person can always be taller. A word such as **full**, however, naturally points toward an endpoint: a container can reach maximum capacity. That difference is one of the central ideas behind **gradable** and **scalar adjectives**. For students, the useful question is not merely: > Which adverb goes with which adjective? It is: > What kind of scale does this adjective create? Once that becomes visible, vocabulary, grammar, comparison and precise writing begin to connect. ## Quick answer: what is a gradable adjective? A gradable adjective describes a property that can vary in degree. Examples: > tall > old > cold > expensive > difficult We can ask: > How tall? > How old? > How cold? > How expensive? We can also compare: > taller > older > colder > more expensive And we can use degree modifiers: > very tall > extremely cold > slightly older > much more expensive The adjective describes a position on a scale. ## Not all gradable scales have the same shape This is where the topic becomes more interesting. Research by Christopher Kennedy and Louise McNally distinguishes gradable predicates partly according to whether their scales are **open** or **closed** and whether their standards are relative or tied to endpoints. A glass can become: > completely full because the scale has a natural upper endpoint. This is why degree words do not combine freely with every adjective. ## Why “very tall” works Consider: > The building is tall. The adjective **tall** compares the building with some context-sensitive standard. A tall Primary 3 child and a tall professional basketball player do not need to be the same height. The adjective depends partly on the comparison class. Now: > The building is very tall. **Very** pushes the building further above the relevant standard. The scale remains open. Nothing in **very tall** claims that the maximum possible height has been reached. That is why the phrase feels natural. ## Why “completely tall” normally does not work Now: > *The building is completely tall. The problem is not grammar in the simple sense that adjective modifiers are forbidden. The problem is semantic fit. **Completely** naturally points toward full attainment of a scale or condition. But **tall** has no obvious endpoint called: > complete tallness. A building can always be taller. So the modifier and adjective disagree about scale structure. English speakers therefore normally choose: > very tall > extremely tall > unusually tall instead. ## “Completely full” works because full has an endpoint Consider a bottle. Its capacity gives us a natural maximum. We can describe stages: > slightly full > half full > almost full > completely full The final phrase makes sense because the upper endpoint is conceptually available. The bottle cannot become “more than completely full” without changing the relevant container assumptions. The adjective **full** therefore behaves differently from **tall**. ## Minimum-standard and maximum-standard adjectives Some scalar adjectives are sensitive to different endpoints. A useful research distinction is: ### Maximum-standard adjectives These often favour an interpretation close to the top of a scale. Examples frequently discussed include: > clean > dry > straight > full Something described simply as **clean** often suggests that the relevant dirt is absent, at least to the standard that matters. ### Minimum-standard adjectives These may require only some non-zero amount of a property. Examples include: > dirty > wet > bent A shirt can count as **dirty** if it has some relevant dirt, even if most of it remains clean. These distinctions help explain why modifiers such as: > completely > almost > slightly behave differently across adjectives. ## “Almost full” tells us something about the scale Compare: > almost full with: > *almost tall The first is ordinary because **full** supplies an endpoint. **Almost** means the endpoint has not quite been reached. With **tall**, there is no corresponding natural endpoint. We can say: > almost as tall as his brother because now the comparison provides a target. The target comes from: > his brother’s height. This is an important lesson: > A modifier can become possible when the sentence supplies the scale endpoint externally. ## Context creates the standard for relative adjectives Consider: > The elephant is small. This sounds strange in ordinary animal comparison. But in a group of adult elephants, one individual may indeed be: > small for an elephant. Likewise: > The classroom is large. This is why vocabulary meaning cannot always be reduced to a single fixed measurement. ## “Tall” does not mean the same centimetre value everywhere Suppose two sentences appear: > Amir is tall for a Primary 6 student. > The tower is tall for a residential building. The adjective is the same. The standard is different. A reader must identify the comparison class. This matters in comprehension because words such as: > large > expensive > difficult > old > fast are often interpreted relative to expectations rather than absolute thresholds. ## Scalar adjectives and antonyms Many common gradable adjectives come in opposing pairs: > tall / short > hot / cold > heavy / light > expensive / cheap These opposites occupy different directions on related scales.
