Semantic Markedness in English Vocabulary: Why “How Old Are You?” Does Not Mean “Are You Old?”

English asks: > How old are you? The question does **not** normally mean: > Are you old? A seven-year-old can answer it. A seventeen-year-old can answer it. A seventy-year-old can answer it. The adjective **old** is doing something broader than its ordinary descriptive job. Now compare: > How young are you? That question is much less neutral. It tends to assume that the person is young, or at least to place youth itself under discussion. This asymmetry is a classic example of **semantic markedness**. In many antonym pairs, one member behaves as the more neutral, general or **unmarked** term, while the other behaves as the more specific or **marked** term. The important classroom lesson is not that one word is “better” than the other. It is that apparently symmetrical opposites often behave asymmetrically inside real sentences. That asymmetry affects: – questions; – measurement; – comparison; – inference; – dictionary meaning; – writing precision. ## Quick answer: what is semantic markedness? In a pair such as: > old / young both words can describe opposite regions on an age scale. But **old** can also appear in a neutral age question: > How old is the building? The question does not imply that the building is old. By contrast: > How young is the building? is marked. It normally assumes that youth or recency is relevant. So in this particular scale and construction: > old = relatively unmarked measuring term > young = relatively marked alternative The same broad pattern appears in pairs such as: > long / short > wide / narrow > high / low > deep / shallow We ask: > How long is the bridge? without implying that the bridge is long. We ask: > How wide is the road? without implying that the road is wide. This is one of the clearest places where lexical meaning meets grammatical behaviour. ## Unmarked does not mean “positive” The word **unmarked** can sound as though it means: > ordinary, good or preferred. That is not the technical point. An unmarked term is simply less restricted in certain environments. Consider: > old In ordinary description: > The building is old. **old** clearly locates the building toward one end of the age scale. But in: > How old is the building? it becomes the neutral dimension word: > what is its age? The same lexical form has a broader grammatical privilege. Markedness is about distribution and interpretation, not praise. ## “How long?” does not imply long Suppose a pencil is only 5 cm long. We can still ask: > How long is the pencil? The natural answer is: > Five centimetres. No contradiction appears. Now: > How short is the pencil? This usually carries a different conversational effect. It may imply: – the pencil is already known to be short; – shortness is under discussion; – the speaker expects an unusually small length. The two adjectives occupy opposite ends of the same scale. Their question behaviour is not symmetrical. ## Measurement expressions reveal the asymmetry English says: > The table is two metres long. Even if two metres is not especially long for a table in some context. Likewise: > The road is six metres wide. > The pool is two metres deep. > The building is thirty metres high. The unmarked adjective often names the dimension itself. This is why we normally do not say: > *The table is two metres short. or: > *The road is six metres narrow. when we merely want to state a measurement. The marked opposite is usually reserved for evaluative comparison: > The table is too short for the room. > The road is unusually narrow. The difference is semantic and grammatical at once. ## One word can have two jobs Take **long**. ### Descriptive job > The queue is long. Meaning: > it extends relatively far compared with a relevant standard. ### Dimensional job > How long is the queue? Meaning: > what is its length? The same adjective can therefore operate as: > one end of a scale and as: > the neutral name of the scale dimension. This duality is central to semantic markedness. ## Why “How old?” is especially memorable Age makes the pattern easy to see because every person has an age. A newborn has an age. A child has an age. An adult has an age. An elderly person has an age. English therefore uses: > How old are you? as the ordinary neutral question meaning: > What is your age? The adjective **old** no longer contributes the ordinary inference: > you are old. The construction neutralises that part of the adjective’s usual descriptive force. ## Markedness is construction-sensitive A word is not globally “marked” or “unmarked” in every possible sentence. Compare: > This phone is old. Now **old** is not neutral. It means something like: > old relative to an expected phone age. Compare: > The phone is three years old. Here **old** participates in an age-measurement construction. Then: > How old is the phone? Again it serves as the neutral dimension term. The exact sentence pattern matters. This is a good safeguard against turning markedness into another memorised label. ## Markedness can appear in antonym pairs Classical lexical semantics often examines markedness in oppositional pairs. Examples include: > old / young > long / short > high / low > wide / narrow > deep / shallow One member may support neutral measurement questions more naturally. This asymmetry helps show that lexical opposites are not simply mirror images. Their meanings interact differently with grammar. ## Antonymy alone does not explain the pattern If two words are antonyms, we know they contrast.
