The easiest numbers in the Voynich Manuscript may be more informative than the unreadable text.

They sit quietly in corners.

Because these marks use familiar European numerals, they can feel like administrative noise added by somebody who merely wanted to organise the book.

That is exactly why they matter.

Administrative marks record the state of an object at the moment somebody administers it.

If the book had already been reordered, the numbers inherit that reordered state.

If leaves were still present, the numbering records their existence.

If a foldout had been bound differently, a number can suddenly appear in the “wrong” place after rebinding.

The Voynich numbering systems are not part of the original message. They are timestamps left by later encounters with the physical book.

First: Folio Numbers Are Not Page Numbers

A folio is one physical leaf.

Its front is the recto.

Its back is the verso.

So folio 57 gives us f57r and f57v.

The numeral “57” is written only once on the leaf, normally at the upper-right of the recto.

This distinction becomes crucial on foldouts because one numbered folio can unfold into several modern viewing panels.

A digital viewer may display f72r1, f72r2 and f72r3 separately.

The historical foliator still numbered the physical leaf as folio 72.

The numbering system therefore belongs to codex navigation, not to our modern screen segmentation.

What Is a Quire Mark?

A quire, or gathering, is a bundle of folded sheets nested together before binding.

Medieval and early modern book production often used gathering signatures or numbers to help binders keep those units in order.

Voynich carries a sequence of quire marks running through twenty numbered gathering positions, although only eighteen gatherings survive today because quires 16 and 18 are missing.

Most quire marks are found where we would expect a gathering identifier to be useful: near the end of the gathering.

They commonly combine an Arabic-looking numeral with an abbreviation corresponding to Latin ordinal endings.

This makes them visually strange to modern eyes but entirely understandable as practical manuscript bookkeeping.

The Two Systems Were Not Written by the Same Hand

Researchers have long noted that the quire marks and folio numbers differ palaeographically.

That means the manuscript was organised at least twice.

One person or group labelled gatherings.

Another later foliated individual leaves.

The time between those events is debated.

The quire marks are generally considered compatible with fifteenth-century practice. Estimates for the foliation have ranged more widely; modern codicological discussion often places it later, potentially into the seventeenth century.

The safe conclusion is simpler than choosing one exact decade:

quire numbering and foliation belong to distinct historical acts.

Why Different Numbering Dates Matter

If two navigation systems were added at different times, the manuscript can preserve two snapshots of its physical history.

Imagine a stack of classroom worksheets.

First somebody numbers the folders.

Years later somebody numbers every sheet.

Later still, six sheets disappear.

The surviving folder and sheet numbers can tell you which losses happened after which organisational event.

Voynich works the same way, except the “worksheets” are parchment bifolia hundreds of years old.

The Missing Numbers Are Positive Evidence of Former Leaves

Usually absence cannot serve as evidence for content.

But numbering gaps can serve as evidence that a numbered position once existed.

That distinction is important.

If folio numbers jump from 58 to 65, we cannot say what f59–64 contained.

We can say the foliation system recognised those six positions.

Combined with the physical quire structure, that missing run corresponds to three absent bifolia at the centre of Quire 8.

This is stronger than merely noticing a tear.

The numbering and codicology agree.

The numbers cannot tell us what the missing leaves said. They can tell us that the later numbered codex included positions those leaves once occupied.

Quire 8: The Six-Number Jump

Quire 8 makes the logic unusually visible.

The surviving sequence runs through f57 and f58, then jumps to f65 and f66.

That is exactly six missing folio numbers.

Physical reconstruction indicates three missing central bifolia.

Six missing folios.

Six skipped numbers.

The correspondence is too structured to treat casually.

It is one reason current codicological work treats these leaves as having existed in a numbered state before their loss.

Missing Quires 16 and 18

The quire sequence contains gaps at 16 and 18.

The foliation contains corresponding two-folio gaps around f91–92 and f97–98.

This alignment links two independent organisational systems.

The most economical explanation is that gatherings occupying those numbered positions once existed in the organised codex and were subsequently lost or removed.

The exact historical moment and agency of loss remain unknown.

Again:

numbering can establish a missing structural position without recovering the missing content.

f12 and f74 Are a Different Kind of Loss

Folio 12 and folio 74 are not simply missing as parts of vanished central gatherings.

Physical stubs indicate that individual leaves were cut out.

Because their numbers survive as gaps inside the foliation, the numbered codex had already assigned those positions.

This gives a relative chronology:

  1. the leaf existed;
  2. the foliation system recognised its position;
  3. the leaf was later removed.

That still does not tell us who removed it or why.

The Numbers Tell Us Reordering Happened Early

This is one of the most consequential deductions.

Several parts of the manuscript appear to be out of their most natural visual or textual order.

Herbal bifolia with different textual properties are intermixed.

Pharmaceutical-looking bifolia are split between Quires 15 and 19.

Quire 9 has evidence for an earlier fold/binding arrangement.

Yet the quire numbers and folio numbers both increase monotonically through the order in which the book later existed.

This means the organisers who numbered the book were not restoring an obvious original sequence.

They were numbering the sequence they had.

If the quire marks are indeed early fifteenth-century additions, then at least some disturbance in bifolium order occurred surprisingly close to the production period rather than only centuries later.

A Number Can Freeze a Mistake

Suppose several unnumbered bifolia are accidentally stacked in the wrong order.

Then somebody numbers the resulting gatherings.

The numbers do not correct the mistake.

They stabilise it.

From then on, “Quire 5” refers to the fifth gathering in the disturbed order.

This is why later numbering cannot be treated as evidence of authorial conceptual sequence.

Navigation preserves the state of the book. It does not certify the intention of the maker.

Quire 9: When a Number Lands in the Wrong Place

Quire 9 is the dramatic exception.

Its large foldout contains folios 67 and 68.

The quire number appears in a location that is awkward under the present binding.

But apparent old stitching gaps in another fold suggest an earlier binding crease.

Use that earlier crease and the quire mark suddenly appears where a quire number belongs: at the end of the gathering.

The folio numbers, by contrast, make sense under the later binding orientation.

This creates a remarkable relative sequence:

  1. one binding orientation;
  2. quire mark added in relation to that orientation;
  3. foldout rebound through a different crease;
  4. folio numbering applied to the later configuration.

The exact chronology remains subject to codicological refinement, but the mismatch is precisely the kind of evidence that lets a physical book remember change.

The Foldouts Were Numbered While Folded

On large foldouts, folio numbers were written where the corner appeared when the sheet was folded into the codex.

That is a small but powerful observation.

It tells us the foliator was handling a functioning book object rather than numbering every unfolded panel as a separate modern page.

The fold state itself was part of navigation.

This is why a foldout can look numerically confusing when viewed completely open on a screen.

The number belongs to the closed-book interface.

Quire Marks 19 and 20 Break the Usual Pattern

Most earlier quire marks use an ordinal-style form with a trailing abbreviation.

Quires 19 and 20 are different.

Their numbers do not follow the same usual ordinal notation, and Quire 20’s mark is placed unusually on the recto of the first folio rather than at the normal end position.

Nick Pelling and others have proposed multiple hands within the quire-mark sequence.

The exact hand count is not settled.

What is safe is that the quire-mark system itself contains variation.

This prevents us from treating “the quire-numbering event” as automatically one pen, one sitting and one moment.

Could the Quire Marks Be Original?

Possibly close to original production.

Gathering marks are the sort of practical notation that can be added during or soon after initial assembly.

Palaeographic assessments often place many of the Voynich quire marks in the fifteenth century.

But “fifteenth century” still covers a range of moments relative to writing, illustration, colouring and binding.

A quire mark can be early without being authorial.

A binder can add it after bifolia have already been rearranged.

Therefore:

early navigation is not identical to original intellectual architecture.

Could the Foliation Be Seventeenth Century?

Yes, and current discussion often favours a relatively late foliation compared with the quire marks.

Older palaeographic estimates have ranged more widely, which is a useful reminder not to convert a handwriting date into false precision.

If the folio numbers are indeed seventeenth century, they would belong near the period when the manuscript becomes much more visible in surviving documentary history.

That would make them especially interesting as a snapshot of the codex before the losses visible today were complete.

The exact dating question deserves specialist palaeographic treatment; the sequence logic does not depend on choosing one precise year.

Numbering Layers Versus Main-Script Numbers

Do not confuse the familiar folio/quire numbers with the separate question explored in Where Are the Numbers?.

That article asks whether the primary Voynich system contains numerals, quantities, coordinates or counting mechanisms.

This article asks what later familiar numbering tells us about the physical history of the codex.

They are opposite directions of evidence.

  • Main-script number problem: can we identify quantitative notation inside Voynichese?
  • Later-numbering problem: what can readable numbers tell us about the book’s changing physical state?

Numbering Creates a Terminus Sequence

Codicology often advances through relative chronology rather than exact calendar dates.

For Voynich, a simplified sequence supported by the numbering evidence is:

  1. main bifolia produced;
  2. some page/bifolium ordering becomes disturbed;
  3. quire marks are added to an organised gathering sequence;
  4. at least Quire 9 undergoes a binding change relative to its earlier fold geometry;
  5. folio numbers are added to a later book state;
  6. leaves whose folio numbers are now absent are subsequently lost or removed;
  7. the surviving book reaches its modern binding/custody state.

The fine details remain debated.

The broad lesson is secure:

the manuscript passed through several organisational states before reaching us.

Why This Matters for Decipherment

A language or cipher theory can ignore numbering only if it does not depend on page order.

Many theories do depend on page order.

Plant first.

Then preparation.

Then body.

Then recipe.

Or one diagram leading to the next.

If the present sequence contains early disturbances, those narratives must be reconstructed from stronger evidence than current folio adjacency.

A later number can tell us where a page was when it was numbered.

It cannot tell us where the original maker intended the idea to sit.

The Numbering Systems Are Evidence About Readers Too

Someone cared enough about the codex to make it navigable.

Numbering a quire is useful for assembly.

Numbering folios is useful for reference.

The second system especially suggests an environment in which individual leaves needed stable addresses.

Those addresses are now indispensable to researchers.

A later organiser unknowingly created the vocabulary with which modern scholarship discusses the manuscript.

“f57v” is not medieval Voynichese.

It is one later reader’s navigational infrastructure surviving into ours.

What the Numbering Systems Do Not Prove

  • They do not recover the original conceptual order by themselves.
  • They do not identify who rearranged the bifolia.
  • They do not identify why leaves were removed.
  • They do not reveal the content of missing folios.
  • They do not prove every quire mark was written by one hand.
  • They do not provide one uncontested calendar date for foliation.
  • They do not mean the manuscript had only one binding before the present one.
  • They do not prove a later foliator could read Voynichese.

What They Do Give Us

  • Two distinguishable navigation layers.
  • Evidence that major reordering preceded at least some numbering.
  • Evidence that leaves now missing occupied recognised numbered positions.
  • Relative chronological constraints on losses.
  • A bridge between missing-folio analysis and rebinding analysis.
  • A way to distinguish historical book state from original authorial intention.
  • One of the strongest non-semantic routes into the manuscript’s early physical biography.

Primary School: Number the Pages, Then Remove Three

Make a ten-page booklet.

Number every page.

Then remove pages 4, 5 and 6.

A future reader can no longer know what was written there.

But the jump from 3 to 7 proves the numbered sequence once expected those missing positions.

Secondary School: Number the Folders Before the Sheets

Give students five folders containing loose sheets.

Mix two sheets first.

Number the folders.

Rebind one folder differently.

Then number every sheet.

Later remove one sheet.

Students can reconstruct the relative sequence of events from where the numbers now sit.

That is codicological reasoning.

JC and Adult Readers: Build an Event Graph

Represent each observable as a chronological constraint.

  • If a removed leaf had a folio number, foliation precedes removal.
  • If a quire mark makes sense only under an earlier fold, quire marking relates to that earlier geometry.
  • If foliation makes sense under the later geometry, rebinding precedes foliation.
  • If both numbering systems follow an already mixed page order, mixing precedes both numbering systems.

Then solve for the event order without forcing exact dates where the evidence supplies only before/after relationships.

Reader Checklist: Before You Trust Voynich Page Order

  1. Is the number a folio number or quire mark?
  2. Which hand/layer wrote it?
  3. Does the number make sense in the current fold state?
  4. Does the physical bifolium constrain adjacency?
  5. Are missing numbers present?
  6. Are missing leaves physically confirmed?
  7. Does the visual/textual sequence suggest an older ordering?
  8. Did numbering occur before or after that suspected reorder?
  9. Could rebinding explain the mismatch?
  10. Is present navigation being mistaken for authorial sequence?
  11. What exact chronological relation is actually supported?

Frequently Asked Questions

Who numbered the Voynich Manuscript?

The individuals are unidentified. Palaeographic evidence indicates that quire marks and folio numbers were written by different people, and there may also be variation within the quire-mark series itself.

Are the numbers original?

The Voynich numbers do not tell us what the book says. They tell us what happened to the book while people were still trying to keep it in order.
