A bound book creates an illusion.
Open the cover and the pages seem to arrive in one natural order.
Page 1 belongs before page 2.
Quire 8 belongs before Quire 9.
The spine appears to certify the sequence.
For the Voynich Manuscript, that assumption is unsafe.
The codex has missing leaves, unusual foldouts, quire marks that belong to an earlier numbering event than the foliation, evidence of more than one sewing phase, and at least one foldout whose gathering mark makes better sense under a different binding orientation.
The binding therefore does not simply hold the Voynich together.
It is evidence.
The Binding Problem asks a precise question: which parts of the manuscript’s present order were established during original production, which were established during an early binding, and which may be the result of later reassembly?

Start With the Physical Grammar of a Codex
A manuscript is not normally built by writing 116 separate leaves and then stacking them like printer paper.
Sheets of parchment are folded into bifolia. Bifolia are nested into gatherings. The gatherings are sewn through their folds onto supports. Covers and boards then protect the text block.
This construction creates nested relationships that survive even when page order later changes.
A bifolium is stronger evidence than adjacency.
Two pages may face each other today because someone bound them that way. Two folios belonging to the same bifolium are parts of one sheet.
The Voynich Has Several Ordering Clocks
The safest reconstruction begins by refusing to collapse every mark into one date.
- Production clock: parchment preparation, drawing, writing and at least some painting.
- Gathering clock: bifolia nested into provisional or final quires.
- Quire-mark clock: gathering numbers added, typically in preparation for binding.
- Binding clock: gatherings sewn into a codex.
- Foliation clock: leaves numbered 1–116 later.
- Loss/removal clock: bifolia and leaves disappear or are cut out.
- Rebinding/repair clock: sewing and covers are altered.
- Modern conservation clock: twentieth- and twenty-first-century stabilisation.
If we merge these clocks, contradictions appear.
If we separate them, the manuscript becomes much more legible physically.
The Quire Marks Come Before the Folio Numbers
The Voynich gatherings carry quire marks, generally on the verso of the last folio in each gathering. Their numeral style appears older than the later foliation.
This creates a relative sequence:
quire organisation → quire marking → later foliation
That matters because missing quire positions and skipped folio numbers can tell us whether a loss occurred before or after a particular numbering event.
When the foliation jumps across leaves that no longer exist, the simplest reading is that those leaves were still present when the folio numbering was assigned.
This is not semantic reconstruction.
It is timeline reconstruction.
Missing Quires 16 and 18 Are Not Blank Spaces in a Story
The manuscript’s quire sequence lacks 16 and 18.
Because folio numbering also skips corresponding leaves, these absences are physically constrained.
But we should resist the temptation to invent what they contained.
A missing gathering tells us that material is absent.
It does not tell us that a missing key, title page, decoding table or decisive recipe once occupied the gap.
The correct output is a structural void with bounds.
Quire 9 Is the Binding Problem in Miniature
Quire 9 consists of the unusual foldout bifolium containing folios 67 and 68, plus a narrow sewn strip.
Its gathering mark appears in an unexpected location in the present binding.
Yet that mark would occupy the conventional end-of-gathering position if the sheet had been bound differently.
This is unusually valuable because the clue is not based on interpreting the astronomy-like diagrams.
It is a relationship between physical orientation and a scribal/binding mark.
The conclusion must still be modest:
Quire 9 preserves evidence consistent with a different earlier binding orientation.
That is much stronger than saying the current orientation is necessarily “wrong” in every historical stage.
The Current Cover Is Not the Whole Binding History
The Voynich has been handled, stored, repaired and rebound across centuries.
Physical descriptions note old sewing supports as well as later leather repair around the spine. Additional stitching holes and differences in thread structure point toward more than one intervention.
At the outermost leaves, old insect damage and staining are consistent with an earlier covered state different from the manuscript’s modern appearance.
Therefore “the binding” is not one object.
It is a sequence of binding states.
Why Sewing Supports Matter
Sewing supports are structural elements, not decoration.
When gatherings are sewn onto thongs or cords, their holes, thread paths and attachment scars can preserve evidence of prior structures even after repair.
If one set of holes is unused in the current sewing, that may record an earlier state.
If thread types differ, repairs may have occurred at different times.
But thread colour alone is not a date.
A proper analysis requires fibre identification, microscopic examination, stitch-path mapping and conservation context.
Rebinding Can Change Adjacency Without Changing Bifolium Identity
This distinction is essential for Voynich research.
Suppose two bifolia are swapped within a quire.
Their internal leaf partnerships remain unchanged.
But the pages facing one another change.
Line-of-thought continuity can break.
Paint-transfer relationships can change.
Hair/flesh pairing can change.
A diagram spanning an intended opening can be separated.
This is why the Bifolium article established the sheet as a production unit before we began reconstructing sequence.
The Biological Quire Gives a Different Kind of Warning
Within the so-called biological section, parts of a design on one bifolium align in a way that would be especially natural if that bifolium occupied the centre of the gathering.
In the present arrangement, it does not.
This does not independently prove a complete alternative order.
It does show that image continuity can provide another physical-layout constraint to compare against sewing and quire evidence.
When multiple independent clues prefer the same arrangement, confidence rises.
A Binding Reconstruction Needs Independent Channels
A strong reconstruction should not be accepted because the text “reads better” under a speculative interpretation.
It should combine evidence that is as independent as possible:
- bifolium identity;
- quire marks;
- folio-number chronology;
- sewing holes and supports;
- hair/flesh side pattern;
- paint or moisture transfer;
- damage that crosses or avoids joins;
- diagram continuity;
- textual boundary statistics measured without semantic assumptions.
This is CivDJ logic applied to codicology: keep the tracks separate until they actually synchronise.
What Binding Evidence Cannot Prove
- It cannot identify what the manuscript means.
- It cannot identify a city merely because a binding technique is common there.
- It cannot make Padua provenance true by compatibility.
- It cannot prove that the manuscript originally had six semantic sections.
- It cannot tell us that every modern adjacency is wrong.
- It cannot distinguish authorial rearrangement from later owner rearrangement without additional evidence.
The Binding Problem and the Frozen Voynich Matrix
eduKate’s Test 1B result was deliberately conservative: the manuscript has real physical, scribal, textual, visual, geometrical and distributional provinces, but no single partition captures all of them.
Binding history is one reason that conclusion matters.
A present-day page sequence can mix production systems that were once organised differently.
Therefore a boundary in today’s foliation may be:
- an original production boundary;
- a quire boundary;
- a later binding boundary;
- a missing-leaf boundary;
- or merely an artefact of current sequence.
Those possibilities must remain separate until tested.
What Survives
- The Voynich is physically organised as bifolia and quires.
- Its quire marks and foliation belong to different chronological layers.
- Some now-missing material appears to have existed when later folio numbers were assigned.
- Quire 9 preserves a strong orientation anomaly relevant to binding history.
- Old sewing and later repairs indicate more than one physical state of the codex.
- Present sequence should therefore be treated as a historical state, not automatically as the authorial sequence.
What Does Not Survive as Established Knowledge
- A fully recovered original folio order.
- A date for every rebinding.
- An identified historical binder.
- A proven original cover.
- A claim that every thematic discontinuity was caused by rebinding.
- A claim that binding style localises the manuscript to one city.
A Better Binding Test
Build a versioned binding-state graph.
- Represent every surviving bifolium as an immutable object.
- Record current quire membership.
- Record quire marks and their positions.
- Record foliation and skipped numbers.
- Map sewing holes, supports and visible repair threads.
- Add parchment-side classifications with uncertainty.
- Add confirmed transfer/offset relationships.
- Add cuts, tears, wormholes and cover stains.
- Generate alternative admissible quire orders.
- Score each arrangement against all physical evidence before looking at semantic hypotheses.
The goal is not to produce the most elegant sequence.
The goal is to eliminate sequences the object itself refuses.
