A hypothesis that can explain every result is not strong.
It is insulated.
The Padua hypothesis has become richer as we have reconstructed the Carrara library, the university, Paduan medicine, pharmacy, baths, astronomical computation, knowledge transfer and the 1405 Venetian transition.
That richness creates a new danger.
Padua can begin to explain too much.
This article is the red-team article: not “why Padua works”, but exactly how Padua should lose if the evidence stops supporting it.

- The hypothesis should weaken if supposedly Paduan features turn out to be common across Europe.
- It should weaken if palaeography or codicology consistently points elsewhere.

- It should fail as a provenance claim if a strong alternative provenance chain is discovered elsewhere.
- Failure would not make the Padua research wasted; Padua could remain an excellent historical comparator.
Failure Test 1: The “Paduan” Features Are Actually Generic
The easiest way for Padua to lose is also the most ordinary.
Suppose the features we find exciting are not local at all.
- Illustrated plants may be common across many medical centres.
- Zodiac circles may be widespread.
- Bathing medicine may exist from Italy to Central Europe.
- Apothecary jars may share broad visual conventions.
- Medicine and astrology may be integrated in many universities.
If so, these observations tell us about medieval Europe rather than Padua.
A feature loses geographic value as its geographic distribution widens.
Failure Test 2: Better Controls Beat Padua
Padua should not be tested in isolation.
The hypothesis becomes meaningful only against competitors.
If Bologna offers an equally dense medicine–astrology network with stronger codicological matches, Padua weakens.
If Lombard manuscripts match production practice better, Padua weakens.
If Central European manuscript traditions explain the script and imagery more economically, Padua weakens.
The right question is comparative likelihood, not narrative beauty.
Failure Test 3: Palaeography Points Elsewhere
The unknown script is one of the largest surviving sources of geographic information.
If systematic palaeographic comparison finds that ductus, abbreviation habits, rare signs and hand structure cluster strongly outside northern Italy, the Paduan production hypothesis should lose weight.
It may survive as an intellectual-ancestry hypothesis.
But that is a different claim.
This distinction prevents a geographic hypothesis from silently changing type when challenged.
Failure Test 4: Codicology Points Elsewhere
Bindings, quires, foldouts, parchment preparation and production order are not glamorous.
That makes them useful.
If the manuscript’s physical construction repeatedly fits another regional tradition better than securely Paduan controls, we should not allow iconographic resemblance to overrule the object.
The manuscript itself outranks the story built around its pictures.
Failure Test 5: Materials Acquire a Non-Paduan Geography
Current materials analyses are mostly non-localising.
But future research could change that.
If parchment sourcing, mineral inclusions, pigment provenance or another physical marker were shown reliably to derive from a region incompatible with Paduan production, that should matter greatly.
We should not rescue Padua by saying that every material was imported unless there is independent reason to think so.
Failure Test 6: The Baths Do Not Behave Like Baths
The Euganean thermal landscape is one of the most seductive Padua connections.
So it needs one of the hardest tests.
If Voynich’s pools, pipes and figures do not exhibit consistent hydraulic, therapeutic or procedural behaviour, then the balneological reading should weaken.
That would remove one of Padua’s strongest apparent thematic matches.
The correct response would not be to redefine every tube as metaphorical merely to save Abano.
Failure Test 7: The Pharmaceutical Pages Are Not Executable
Paduan pharmacy and receptaria show how practical medicine can move from learned authority to working instruction.
But if Voynich’s pharmaceutical-looking pages lack any recoverable retrieval, quantity, preparation or ingredient logic, then the practical-pharmacy model should lose weight.
A jar shape alone cannot carry the interpretation.
Failure Test 8: The Circular Diagrams Are Not Operational
The Dondi comparator asks whether geometry preserves relationships.
If Voynich circles show no stable ring logic, sector structure, recurrent label roles, periodicity or cross-page grammar, the technical-computation comparison weakens.
They may be symbolic, decorative or classificatory instead.
That would not destroy Padua by itself.
It would remove one supporting lane.
Failure Test 9: Mixed Content Is an Illusion
The Padua network is attractive partly because medicine, plants, astrology, baths and pharmacy can coexist inside one historical system.
But what if the Voynich sections do not form one integrated system?
If statistical, codicological or scribal analysis shows that the sections were produced for different jobs and later assembled, then the need for one Paduan knowledge environment becomes weaker.
A composite manuscript may have multiple origins.
Failure Test 10: The Timeline Stops Fitting
The Padua corridor benefits from the early-fifteenth-century parchment dating.
If future dating or palaeographic work convincingly shifts major production activity outside the relevant Paduan state we have reconstructed, the hypothesis should be reweighted.
The historical environment should not be stretched indefinitely to follow the manuscript.
Failure Test 11: No Ownership Bridge Emerges
Absence of evidence is not automatically evidence of absence.
But sustained targeted failure matters.
If Paduan, Venetian, Ferraran and Central European archival searches continue to produce no object-specific bridge while another provenance corridor gains documentary support, Padua should lose probability.
The hypothesis should not remain permanently frozen at “maybe”.
Failure Test 12: The Carrara Library Does Not Contain the Object
No Zago inventory entry has been demonstrated as Voynich.
If the entire inventory becomes securely resolved and none can match, the specific Carrara-ownership hypothesis should fall.
Padua could still survive through post-1405 production or another network route.
But the hypothesis must change openly rather than pretending the Carrara claim was never made.
Failure Test 13: The Hypothesis Requires Too Many Invisible Transfers
One undocumented edge may be historically normal.
Ten undocumented edges are a warning.
A theory becomes expensive when it requires:
- an unknown Paduan owner;
- an unknown fleeing scribe;
- an unknown Venetian transfer;
- an unknown German student;
- an unknown Central European collection;
- an unknown rebinding;
- an unknown later sale;
all merely to connect the known endpoints.
Every hidden edge adds flexibility.
Too much flexibility removes predictive power.
Failure Test 14: The Evidence Is Not Independent
Ten clues can really be one clue.
If plants, jars and layouts all derive from one broadly Italian visual convention, counting them separately exaggerates support.
A robust Padua case needs channels that fail independently:
- archive;
- object;
- script;
- materials;
- technical operation;
- provenance.
Failure Test 15: A Better Provenance Appears
The cleanest falsification would be positive evidence for somewhere else.
Imagine a secure fifteenth-century Central European inventory describing the exact physical manuscript, supported by ownership marks and local scribal evidence.
At that point, Padua should not be defended as physical provenance simply because its medicine remains interesting.
It could remain an intellectual comparator.
The hypothesis must be allowed to change type or die.
How Hypotheses Cheat Without Meaning To
There are several common rescue moves we should recognise.
- Moving the goalposts: when production fails, switch silently to intellectual influence.
- Exception stacking: every mismatch becomes a special case.
- Selection bias: show only the Paduan images that resemble Voynich.
- Denominator neglect: ignore how many non-Paduan manuscripts show the same feature.
- Story completion: fill archival gaps with the most narratively convenient route.
- Authority substitution: a famous historical person replaces object evidence.
The series should actively test itself for these behaviours.
A Kill-Switch Table
- Carrara ownership hypothesis: kill if inventory/object evidence excludes it and no independent ownership trace emerges.
- Paduan production hypothesis: kill or sharply reduce if palaeography/codicology/material geography points elsewhere.
- Euganean bath hypothesis: kill if Voynich water pages fail functional balneological tests.
- Pharmaceutical execution hypothesis: kill if retrieval and recipe behaviour cannot be demonstrated.
- Dondi technical-line hypothesis: kill if diagrams lack operational structures or relevant transmission.
- Broad Paduan intellectual-environment hypothesis: retain only if Padua remains a useful, historically accurate comparator even after direct provenance claims fail.
Failure Is Not Wasted Work
Suppose Padua eventually loses.
We would still have learned:
- how fifteenth-century medical knowledge moved;
- how technical manuscripts transform across receivers;
- how university networks survive political change;
- how baths, pharmacy and astrology connect to medicine;
- which Voynich features are generic and which are unusual;
- how to build better controls for the next hypothesis.
A failed hypothesis can be an excellent instrument.
The World-Return Rule
Every few articles, the Padua model should be returned to the world.
Ask:
- What did we predict?
- What did we observe?
- Which observations were independent?
- Which failed?
- What had to be rescued after the fact?
- Did Padua become more specific or merely more elaborate?
A good theory becomes narrower as evidence accumulates. A bad theory becomes more flexible.

The Final Idea
The Padua hypothesis does not deserve protection.
It deserves good tests.
If it survives them, it becomes more valuable.
If it fails, we should know exactly where it failed and carry that information into the next model.
We are not trying to make Padua win. We are trying to make the evidence win.
