Voynich and Padua | What Survives After We Remove the Story?

Now remove the mystery.

Remove the beautiful Carrara court.

Remove the dramatic fall of Padua.

Remove Pietro d’Abano, the Dondi clocks, Savonarola, Abano’s hot springs and every tempting visual resemblance.

Remove the desire for Padua to be right.

What is left?

This is the audit article. Its job is not to advance the Padua hypothesis. Its job is to determine which parts survive when narrative force is reduced as far as possible.

Quick Read

  • Survives strongly: the Voynich manuscript is a genuine medieval object whose parchment belongs to the early fifteenth century and whose known materials are consistent with medieval manuscript production.
  • Survives strongly: Padua around 1400 was a major university and medical centre with medicine, natural philosophy, astronomy/astrology and technical knowledge in active interaction.
  • Survives strongly: the Carrara Herbal is a securely Paduan illustrated medical manuscript dated roughly 1390–1404.
  • Survives strongly: Francesco Novello’s 1404 library inventory records a medically dense collection immediately before the fall of Carrara rule.

  • Does not survive as established fact: Voynich was made in Padua, belonged to the Carrara, depicts Abano, derives from Dondi, or was written by any named Paduan scholar.
  • Still missing: a Paduan-specific material, scribal, textual or documentary edge to Beinecke MS 408 and a provenance bridge from the fifteenth century toward Prague.

Why Remove the Story?

Humans are very good at making fragments cohere.

This ability is essential to historical reconstruction.

It is also dangerous.

Once we hear:

  • medical library;
  • illustrated herbal;
  • astrologer-physicians;
  • thermal baths;
  • technical clocks;
  • violent political collapse;
  • missing books;
  • an undeciphered manuscript;

the mind begins doing unpaid bridge construction.

The result can feel more evidential than it is.

The cure is subtraction.

Floor 1: The Voynich Object Is Real and Old

This survives everything.

Radiocarbon testing places the parchment in the early fifteenth century. McCrone analysis found writing ink and pigments compatible with medieval materials. Yale’s later non-destructive investigations found no modern material contradiction and found bookmaking techniques consistent with the medieval object.

The manuscript has a complicated physical history: missing folios, disturbed ordering, later foliation, later binding and evidence of earlier binding states.

None of this says Padua.

It gives us the hard object floor on which every geographic theory must stand.

Floor 2: Padua Was Genuinely Capable

The Padua environment does not need Voynich to be historically interesting.

The university was already mature by the opening of the fifteenth century.

Medicine, philosophy and celestial knowledge interacted.

Court patronage supported manuscripts and professors.

Technical astronomy had deep roots.

Pharmacy and therapeutic bathing belonged to practical medicine.

This is not a Voynich claim.

It is historical context strong enough to survive the removal of Voynich entirely.

Floor 3: The Carrara Herbal Is a Real Control

British Library Egerton MS 2020 remains one of our most valuable controls after every story is removed.

Why?

Because it is independently known to be Paduan.

It gives us a real object against which to measure:

  • medical vernacularisation;
  • plant illustration;
  • page planning;
  • court patronage;
  • scribal production;
  • retrieval architecture;
  • knowledge transformation.

Its usefulness does not depend on Voynich resembling it.

That is exactly what makes it a good control.

Floor 4: The 1404 Inventory Is a Real Snapshot

Francesco Zago’s 9 May 1404 inventory remains a major anchor.

Fifty-seven manuscripts were recorded initially, with four later additions.

More than two-thirds of the titles in Sarah R. Kyle’s reconstruction concern health and medicine.

The list includes physical metadata and evidence of loans.

This survives story removal because the document existed independently of every Voynich theory.

What does not survive is the leap:

Zago has unknown books, therefore one may be Voynich.

Unknown remains unknown.

Floor 5: 1405 Is a Real Systems Transition

The Carrara state ended in 1405.

Venice took Padua.

The university survived.

Venetian policy subsequently directed students toward Padua, recruited professors and supported academic salaries.

This is a documented political and institutional transition.

What disappears when we remove the story is the automatic Voynich consequence.

Political disruption makes manuscript movement plausible in general.

It does not demonstrate movement of Beinecke MS 408.

Floor 6: The Medical Network Is Real

Pietro d’Abano, the Santasofia lineage, the Dondi, Beldomandi, Montagnana and Savonarola do not need to be Voynich suspects.

Their relationships and works establish that Paduan learned culture could connect several domains.

  • Medicine with natural philosophy.
  • Medicine with celestial theory.
  • Medicine with pharmacy.
  • Medicine with bathing.
  • Astronomy with technical diagrams and machines.
  • University teaching with patient-specific advice.

This survives as a network fact.

The named individuals themselves should not be turned into hidden authors.

Floor 7: Knowledge Can Change Interface

Our comparator manuscripts show a recurring historical operation.

A learned text can become:

  • a recipe extract;
  • a household note;
  • a vernacular translation;
  • a classified manual;
  • a technical diagram;
  • a patient-specific consilium.

Representation changes while some functional structure survives.

This is not uniquely Paduan.

But it is a strong methodological result for Voynich research generally.

What Falls Away 1: “Voynich Is in the Carrara Library”

We do not have that evidence.

The Zago inventory does not currently contain a demonstrated Voynich identification.

Therefore Carrara ownership is an open hypothesis, not a surviving fact.

What Falls Away 2: “The Baths Are Abano”

The Euganean medical landscape is real.

The identification of Voynich’s pools with that landscape is not.

Until structural or textual evidence distinguishes Abano from the many other European bathing traditions, the connection remains comparator-level.

What Falls Away 3: “The Circles Are Dondi”

The Dondi tradition proves sophisticated Paduan technical representation.

It does not identify a Voynich wheel.

The surviving insight is functional:

technical diagrams can encode operation rather than appearance.

Voynich still has to demonstrate the operation.

What Falls Away 4: “The Jars Prove Pharmacy”

Known receptaria and antidotaries make pharmacy plausible.

But a practical interpretation needs retrieval, ingredient logic, quantities or other execution cues.

Without them, “pharmaceutical” remains a visual working label.

What Falls Away 5: “1405 Explains the Missing Provenance”

War can disperse books.

The Carrara library had already experienced dispersal in 1388.

But the existence of a plausible disruption does not demonstrate that Voynich was disrupted by it.

The ownership bridge remains missing.

What Falls Away 6: “A Famous Paduan Must Be the Author”

No named Paduan physician or technical scholar has been identified as the author of Voynich.

Pietro is too early for physical authorship.

Dondi is an earlier capability line.

Montagnana and Savonarola are valuable network controls.

Famous names should remain evidence about what a culture could do, not magnets pulling anonymous manuscripts toward them.

What Remains Unknown 1: Production Geography

We still do not know where the manuscript was physically made.

Materials support a medieval date but do not currently localise it to Padua.

The script has not supplied a secure place.

Codicology has not delivered a universally accepted Paduan localisation.

This coordinate remains open.

What Remains Unknown 2: Meaning

No Padua hypothesis can substitute for decipherment or functional understanding.

We still do not know with confidence what the script encodes.

We still do not know whether the traditional section labels correspond to the original creator’s categories.

A good historical environment can narrow questions.

It cannot manufacture semantics.

What Remains Unknown 3: The Ownership Bridge

The seventeenth-century Prague chain is real.

The early-fifteenth-century production horizon is real.

The route between them remains incomplete.

That missing path is one of the highest-value research targets because it could change geographic probability without deciphering a single word.

What the Padua Hypothesis Is After the Audit

After removing the story, Padua still survives.

But it survives in a more modest and more useful form.

Padua is a historically dense, chronologically compatible, medically and technically sophisticated comparator environment that generates testable questions about Beinecke MS 408. It is not currently proven provenance.

That sentence is stronger than the romantic theory because every word can survive challenge.

What Has Actually Improved?

The research has not yet moved us from “unknown origin” to “Padua”.

It has moved us from a vague visual hypothesis to a structured test environment.

We now know what to look for:

  • Paduan-specific parameters rather than generic themes.
  • Operational diagram correspondences rather than shape resemblance.
  • Executable pharmacy structures rather than jars.
  • Functional bath sequences rather than naked figures in water.
  • Independent palaeographic and codicological localisation.
  • Object-level archival identification.
  • A provenance bridge.

That is real progress because it makes future discoveries easier to classify.

The Backbeats That Remain

When the exciting foreground is muted, several slow tracks remain audible.

  • Time: early fifteenth century.
  • Object: real medieval codex with complex production history.
  • Padua capability: unusually strong medicine and technical learning.
  • Network: people and knowledge move across court, university, pharmacy, household and other cities.
  • Representation: technical knowledge can change interface dramatically while preserving function.
  • Unknown: no direct edge from that capability network to the Voynich object.

Those are the tracks worth carrying into the next research cycle.

The Next Questions Are Better Than the First Questions

We began with:

Could Voynich be from Padua?

We can now ask:

  1. Which Voynich features actually discriminate geography?
  2. Which Paduan technical operations have manuscript signatures we can test?
  3. Which students or physicians create documented northward routes?
  4. Which unresolved inventories contain sufficiently specific object metadata?
  5. Which comparative cities explain the same feature bundle?
  6. Which Padua claims fail first under matched controls?
  7. What new observation would cause a major probability update?

That is a much more mature research programme.

The Final Idea

After we remove the story, Padua does not disappear.

That matters.

But it also does not turn into provenance.

That matters more.

What survives is a strong historical comparator, a coherent network model and a set of increasingly sharp tests. What does not yet survive is the claim that Beinecke MS 408 was made in Padua. That is exactly where the research should stand until the world gives us another datum.
