He gives it a named German scholar who studied at Padua, graduated there in 1423, formed lasting scientific friendships in that environment and then returned north.
Cusa is a real Padua→Germany intellectual route inside the Voynich parchment window. He is not a Voynich owner, scribe or demonstrated carrier.

The degree date is unusually valuable.
1423 sits squarely within the commonly reported 1404–1438 parchment interval.
We do not need to use a later sixteenth-century scholar to demonstrate the northward route.
A German intellectual is physically studying in Padua at the right time and returns north almost immediately afterward.
Cusa Is a Lawyer in a Scientific Environment
Cusa’s formal Paduan degree was in canon law, not medicine.
That difference matters.
His relevance to Voynich does not depend on turning him into a hidden physician.
The important feature is the university environment.
Treccani describes his Paduan years as intellectually expansive beyond his formal discipline, placing him in contact with humanist and mathematical circles.
A university can transfer more than the subject printed on the diploma.
Toscanelli Is the Key Scientific Friendship
Cusa formed a lasting friendship at Padua with Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli.
The relationship continued for decades and included mathematical discussion.
Treccani notes that Cusa dedicated mathematical work to Toscanelli and sought his correction.
This gives us a robust intellectual edge formed in Padua and surviving across geography and time.
Padua creates a relationship; the relationship continues after both scholars leave the city.
Beldomandi Sits Nearby in the Network
Toscanelli studied with Prosdocimo de’ Beldomandi.
Treccani cautiously notes that Beldomandi’s teaching may have offered subjects of interest to Cusa as well.
The caveat is important.
We should not turn possible intellectual exposure into formal discipleship.

Cusa’s Paduan education connected him with important canon lawyers and future church leaders, including Giuliano Cesarini and Domenico Capranica.

After Padua and Rome, Cusa entered the University of Cologne in 1425 for philosophy and theology.

person route + intellectual continuity ≠ Voynich object route.

- later medical collector: Hartmann Schedel;
- church intellectual/diplomat: Nicholas of Cusa;

These routes are different.

Why This Matters for the Prague Problem
Voynich is securely documented in Prague much later.
One possible historical model is northern-Italian intellectual material entering Central Europe through mobile scholars and church networks.
Cusa demonstrates the mobility mechanism in general.
He does not supply the missing object-level chain to Prague.
That gap remains intact.
What Would Make Cusa Directly Voynich-Relevant?
- A library catalogue or ownership note connecting him to an unidentified illustrated technical codex matching Voynich.
- A manuscript in his circle using the same unusual script or distinctive visual grammar.
- A specific Beldomandi/Toscanelli technical source preserved both in Cusa’s network and Voynich.
- A custody chain from a Cusan collection into later Prague or Rudolfine libraries.
- Independent codicological evidence placing Voynich inside the same manuscript network.
What the Cusa Route Can Legitimately Support
- A German scholar was trained at Padua and graduated there in 1423.
- He formed lasting scientific and ecclesiastical relationships in Padua.
- He returned to the German scholarly world almost immediately afterward.
- Padua could therefore transmit intellectual culture north through named individual carriers inside the Voynich window.

What It Cannot Support
- that Cusa owned, copied or saw Voynich;
- that Voynich travelled Padua→Cologne;

- Inventory manuscripts securely connected to Cusa’s Padua years.
- Separate books owned before Padua from books acquired during or after Padua.
- Trace named scribes and companions.
- Search for scientific diagrams, astronomical tables and unusual technical compilations.
- Follow later custody into German and Central-European libraries.
- Require object evidence before linking any route to Voynich.
