Vienna creates a different problem for the Padua hypothesis.
Prague proves that Central Europe had a serious medical and astronomical university culture.
Vienna proves that this culture could be technically organised around calendars, tables, instruments and mathematical astronomy during the exact decades we care about.
Vienna is therefore a matched control for the Dondi–Beldomandi line: another university in which medicine and mathematical astronomy operate side by side inside the Voynich parchment window.

Vienna asks whether that configuration is truly local.
The answer is uncomfortable.
Vienna also had an active medical faculty and a rapidly developing mathematical-astronomical school.
That does not erase Padua’s specificity.
It raises the discriminator threshold.
Medicine Is Not Peripheral in Early-Fifteenth-Century Vienna
The University of Vienna’s institutional history preserves detailed records of medical faculty officers.
Johannes Schroff, born in the Inn Valley, served as dean of medicine in 1402, 1403, 1405/06, 1406/07, 1408/09, 1410/11 and 1414/15.
Christian von Susato served repeatedly as dean from 1405 through 1428.
Petrus Volczian then appears repeatedly in the deanship from 1426 onward.
These are not isolated names.
They demonstrate institutional continuity across the entire early Voynich window.
Johannes von Gmunden Changes the Technical Comparison
The University of Vienna identifies Johannes von Gmunden, born around 1380–1384 and deceased in 1442, as the foundational figure of Vienna’s medieval astronomical school.
He likely began studying at Vienna around 1400, received the master’s degree around 1406 and joined the arts faculty.
From 1416 he regularly taught mathematics and astronomy.
That date matters enormously.
It places an active technical astronomy programme inside the same material interval as Beinecke MS 408.
Tables Are a Different Kind of Representation
Johannes von Gmunden’s reputation rests partly on astronomical tables.
A table is not a picture.
It is a compressed operational interface.
It converts a mathematical model into something a trained user can consult repeatedly.
This creates a useful Voynich question.
Could some repeated Voynich textual or diagrammatic structures function like lookup systems rather than prose?
Padua’s Beldomandi material asks the same kind of question.
Vienna shows that the operation is not geographically unique.
Calendars Bring Time Into the Interface
Johannes von Gmunden also produced calendars that circulated widely.
Calendar knowledge is especially relevant because it joins astronomy to practical temporal use.
A calendar can support:
- religious observance;
- seasonal timing;
- astronomical prediction;
- medical timing;
- agricultural or administrative decisions.
This means circular or zodiacal structure can belong to a practical time system without being a horoscope.
Instrument Instructions Are an Even Harder Control
The Vienna historical archive notes Johannes von Gmunden’s instructions for constructing astronomical instruments.
This is important because it closes the gap between diagram and object.
A technical manuscript can contain geometry intended to become a physical instrument.
That is directly comparable to the Dondi Tractatus astrarii, where a machine survives through manuscript description.
Padua and Vienna therefore independently demonstrate:
astronomical model → diagram/instruction → executable instrument.
This lowers the geographic value of technical diagramming by itself.
1435: Books and Instruments Enter the University Library
Johannes von Gmunden’s 1435 testament left books and astronomical instruments to the arts faculty library.
This detail is a gift to manuscript-history research.
It shows knowledge existing across multiple physical forms:
- books;
- tables;
- calendars;
- instruments;
- lectures.
A technical tradition is not reducible to one manuscript type.
The Vienna School Becomes Even Stronger Later
Johannes von Gmunden was followed by the famous Vienna astronomical tradition associated with Peuerbach and Regiomontanus.
Those later figures sit beyond or at the edge of the Voynich parchment interval and must not be used to back-project mature later forms into 1420.
But their success demonstrates continuity of the school that begins inside our target period.
later fame is continuity evidence, not proof that every later feature existed in the same form earlier.
The Medical Faculty and Astronomy Need Not Be the Same People
Padua’s Beldomandi is unusually powerful because one person crosses medicine and astronomy.
Vienna’s control does not require the same biographical fusion.
A university network can connect disciplines institutionally even when specialists are different people.
This matters for Voynich because a composite or collaborative manuscript may combine knowledge from several specialists.
We should not assume one author mastered every apparent domain.
Tyrol Gives Vienna an Alpine Human Route
Johannes Schroff’s origin in the Inn Valley is a small but useful geographic signal.
The medical faculty itself drew people through Alpine regions linking northern Italy and the German-speaking lands.
This does not connect Schroff to Padua.
It reminds us that the Alps are a corridor, not an intellectual wall.
Vienna’s Strengths Against Padua
- Active medical faculty across 1404–1438.
- A mathematical-astronomical school developing inside the same period.
- Johannes von Gmunden’s tables, calendars and instrument instructions.

- Explicit northward circulation of Paduan medical texts.
The Vienna–Padua Test
To discriminate the two environments, compare:
- astronomical table structures;
- zodiacal calculation methods;
- instrument diagrams;
- calendar organisation;
- scribal abbreviations;
- mixed medical-astronomical manuscripts;
- paper versus parchment preferences;
- local coordinate systems;
- language mixtures;
- provenance routes.
Generic circles and star imagery should carry almost no weight unless they preserve one of these deeper differences.
What Would Make Vienna Win?
- Austrian palaeographic or codicological localisation.
- Voynich diagrams matching Viennese astronomical operations more closely than Paduan ones.
- Direct relation to Johannes von Gmunden’s technical tradition.
- An Austrian or Viennese ownership trace before Prague.
- Mixed-language or manuscript-production features clustering with Vienna/Klosterneuburg controls.
What Would Keep Vienna as a Comparator?
- If its strongest correspondences remain generic technical astronomy.
- If manuscript materials and hands point south.
- If no object-level route emerges.
- If Paduan-specific operations outperform Viennese controls.
The Important Result Already
Vienna removes another shortcut.
A university combining medicine and technical astronomy is not enough to identify Padua.
Astronomical tables are not enough.
Instrument diagrams are not enough.
The Voynich diagrams must tell us which technical tradition they belong to; the mere existence of technical astronomy can no longer do the localisation work for us.
