Voynich Comparator | Pseudo-Mesue’s Grabadin: When Medieval Pharmacy Organised Medicines by What They Became

There is a reason the Grabadin belongs immediately after the Antidotarium Nicolai in the eduKateSG Voynich comparator library.

The Antidotarium Nicolai teaches us what a compact, repeatable compound-medicine repertoire can look like.

Pseudo-Mesue’s Grabadin pushes the problem one step further.

It asks us to notice that medicines can be organised not only by disease, ingredient or authority, but by what kind of preparation they become.

Electuary.

Syrup.

Decoction.

Troche.

Pill.

Ointment.

Oil.

Once that principle becomes visible, a medieval pharmacy no longer looks like a random collection of substances. It looks like a transformation system.

The Grabadin matters to Voynich research because it shows how a technical tradition can classify medicines through physical outcome and procedure. It does not prove that Voynich is a copy of Mesue, a pharmacy manual, Italian, Arabic-derived or written in Latin.

Quick Read

  • The corpus traditionally attributed to “Mesue the Younger” is now treated cautiously by modern scholarship as the work of an anonymous thirteenth-century European author or authors writing under the authority of the Mesue name.

  • The system therefore provides a strong control for asking whether a manuscript’s categories reflect ingredients, diseases, procedures, material states or finished products.
  • It does not establish any direct historical relationship to Beinecke MS 408.

Comparator Firewall

Grabadin is a historical control. It is not a Voynich source claim.

This firewall is especially important because the chronology is seductive.

A surviving Grabadin manuscript was completed in 1418.

The Voynich parchment falls in the broad early-fifteenth-century radiocarbon window commonly reported as 1404–1438.

Those dates make comparison historically legitimate.

They do not create contact.

Two books can exist at the same time without one author ever seeing the other.

Chronological overlap is a permission to investigate, not evidence of descent.

First Correct the Name: Pseudo-Mesue Is Not Simply Ibn Māsawayh

Older catalogues and printed editions often present the pharmaceutical corpus under the name Johannes Mesue, Mesue Junior or Johannes Damascenus and connect that name with the famous Persian physician Yūhannā ibn Māsawayh.

Modern scholarship is more cautious.

Wellcome’s current catalogue for MS.492 describes the corpus as attributed to an anonymous thirteenth-century author, perhaps more than one author, probably European and possibly from Italy or France. The “Mesue” identity appears to have supplied authority to the texts.

This matters because attribution is itself a transmission layer.

A medieval book can carry the name of a famous authority without having been written by that historical person.

That is not fraud in the simple modern sense. Premodern textual cultures often transmitted works through attributions that were accepted, contested, inherited or strategically authoritative.

Voynich research needs the same discipline whenever a name appears near the manuscript.

A name attached to a work is evidence about attribution history. It is not automatically a verified biological author.

The Corpus Is Already Modular

Wellcome MS.492 presents four treatises as one larger work.

  1. Canones — principles concerning purgation and the correction/use of medicines.
  2. De consolatione medicinarum — a compendium of purgative simples.
  3. Antidotarium sive Grabadin — compound medicines.
  4. Practica sive Grabadin — diseases arranged broadly from head downward with remedies.

The same named corpus therefore moves across at least four different information jobs.

Principle.

Simple substance.

Compound preparation.

Disease-specific practice.

This is important for Voynich because visual heterogeneity does not automatically imply unrelated subject matter. A single technical domain can legitimately demand different organisational modes.

A 1418 Witness Gives Us a Rare Chronological Control

Wellcome MS.491 is particularly valuable because its scribe dated the completion of the manuscript.

The catalogue records a Grabadin medicinarum particularium completed on 23 March 1418.

The volume is on vellum, written in a neat semi-Gothic hand, with initials, paragraph marks and some headings in red.

This makes it useful in two separate ways.

First, it demonstrates that Grabadin material was actively copied in the same broad chronological world as the Voynich parchment.

Second, it gives us a normal manuscript control.

The 1418 book is readable.

Its rubrication is recognisable.

Its textual role is recoverable.

Its date can be stated because the scribe actually supplied one.

Voynich gives us none of those semantic conveniences.

That contrast is scientifically useful.

The Grabadin Organises Medicine Through Material Outcome

One of the most interesting features of the Grabadin tradition is its organisation of compound medicines into preparation categories.

Modern historical work on pharmacy commonly summarises twelve distinctions including:

  • electuaries;
  • opiate preparations;
  • purgative medicines;
  • confections;
  • loochs or thick preparations taken by licking;
  • syrups and related preparations;
  • decoctions and infusions;
  • troches or lozenges;
  • powders;
  • pills;
  • ointments and plasters;
  • oils.

Several of those categories are striking because they organise medicine by material state and preparation method.

A syrup is not primarily defined by one disease.

A pill is not one ingredient.

An ointment is not one organ.

They are ways of making matter behave.

ingredient identity → transformation → material form → usable preparation

That is a different taxonomy from a herbal organised by plant name or a medical handbook organised from head to toe.

Why Material Form Matters to an Apothecary

Physical form changes practice.

A powder is measured, stored and administered differently from an oil.

A syrup flows differently from an ointment.

A troche must hold together as a solid.

A decoction requires extraction in liquid.

A plaster must remain sufficiently cohesive to be applied externally.

Therefore the end product controls several other variables:

  • container;
  • mixing method;
  • heating;
  • grinding;
  • viscosity;
  • storage;
  • dose form;
  • route of application;
  • shelf handling.

Modern research into early pharmacy has recently emphasised how much this tactile, material understanding mattered. A technical category can be embodied in the substance itself.

The medicine tells the practitioner something by how it pours, spreads, hardens, dissolves or sticks.

This Gives Us a Better Way to Look at Voynich Vessels

The so-called pharmaceutical pages of Voynich contain differentiated vessel-like forms beside plant fragments and labels.

The easy interpretation is:

This jar contains this plant medicine.

That may be true.

Grabadin gives us a richer alternative question.

Could vessel or container classes encode preparation state rather than merely ingredient identity?

A narrow-necked vessel could, in principle, correlate with one class of liquid.

A wide form could correlate with an ointment-like preparation.

A vessel family could be diagrammatic rather than literal.

These are hypotheses.

The important advance is that the comparator gives us new variables to test.

  • vessel morphology;
  • label morphology;
  • adjacent plant-part type;
  • text length;
  • repeated container class;
  • possible preparation family.

If those variables correlate systematically, vessel shape becomes more interesting.

If they do not, the pharmaceutical-container interpretation weakens.

The Practica Shows a Different Organising Principle

The Pseudo-Mesue corpus is useful partly because it contains its own internal contrast.

The Antidotarium sive Grabadin organises compound medicines.

The Practica sive Grabadin proceeds through diseases in a broadly head-to-toe order.

Same medical world.

Different retrieval grammar.

One asks:

What type of medicine am I making?

The other asks:

Where is the disease and what remedy belongs there?

This is exactly why visual section differences in Voynich cannot be mapped automatically onto topic differences.

A single domain can have several interfaces because the user enters through different questions.

A Copying Error Inside Wellcome MS.492 Is an Unexpected Gift

Wellcome’s catalogue records something particularly valuable in the Italian Pseudo-Mesue manuscript MS.492.

Part of the Practica is textually displaced.

The catalogue reconstructs the correct sequence and suggests that the transposition may derive from quires bound out of sequence in the exemplar used by the scribe—or in an even earlier antigraph.

This is extraordinary for Voynich methodology.

It shows a real, readable medical text whose semantic order can be damaged by physical manuscript transmission.

Because we can read the text, we can discover that the physical order is wrong.

With Voynich, we do not have that semantic safety net.

A scrambled exemplar can create apparently strange sequence without any strange underlying intellectual system.

This makes the existing Voynich rule stronger:

current order ≠ guaranteed original order ≠ guaranteed conceptual order.

Translation Also Changes the Surface

Wellcome MS.492 preserves the Pseudo-Mesue corpus in Italian translation, copied in Tuscany in the 1460s–1470s.

The same technical tradition can therefore survive across language change.

Latin headings become Italian.

Technical terms adapt.

Spelling changes.

Page design can change.

The underlying pharmaceutical categories remain recognisable.

This is another powerful warning against simplistic source hunting.

Knowledge identity, language identity and manuscript identity are different variables.

What the Grabadin Can Legitimately Teach Voynich Research

  • A late-medieval pharmaceutical corpus can be modular rather than visually or textually uniform.
  • Compound medicines can be classified by preparation form and material outcome.
  • Technical categories can be based on how substances behave, not only what they are called.
  • The same medical corpus can use different organisational grammars for compounds and diseases.
  • A dated 1418 witness shows Grabadin material circulating directly within the Voynich material horizon.
  • Technical knowledge can cross from Latin into vernacular Italian while preserving recognisable structure.
  • Manuscript transmission can scramble textual order through misplaced quires even when the underlying work is perfectly meaningful.
  • Vessel morphology might be tested against preparation classes rather than assumed to mark one ingredient per jar.
  • A strong comparator creates new falsifiable variables rather than merely supplying a resemblance.

What the Grabadin Does Not Prove

  • that Voynich is a Pseudo-Mesue text;
  • that Voynich is an antidotary;
  • that Voynich vessels encode Grabadin preparation classes;
  • that Voynich was made in Italy or France;
  • that its writing represents Latin or Italian;
  • that the historical Persian physician Ibn Māsawayh authored the Pseudo-Mesue corpus;
  • that chronological overlap demonstrates manuscript contact;
  • that every visual section in Voynich belongs to medicine;
  • that one container shape can be assigned a pharmaceutical meaning without internal correlation.

A Grabadin-Inspired Test for Voynich

  1. Classify Voynich vessel forms without assigning meaning.
  2. Classify adjacent plant fragments independently.
  3. Record label families attached to each vessel and fragment class.
  4. Measure whether vessel classes predict label classes better than chance.
  5. Test whether recurring vessel classes align with recurring textual frames.
  6. Compare the result with readable pharmaceutical corpora organised by preparation type.
  7. Repeat with non-pharmaceutical container controls.
  8. Keep the mapping only if it predicts held-out Voynich pages.

This is much stronger than saying “these look like pharmacy jars”.

It gives the jar hypothesis a way to fail.

Student Lens: Classification Changes What We See

Primary: sort familiar foods first by ingredient, then by physical form—drink, paste, powder, solid. Notice that the same object world can produce different classification systems.

Lower Secondary: compare two medicine lists, one arranged by body part and one by dosage form. Which is faster for different tasks?

Upper Secondary: model a technical book as a retrieval system. What query does each chapter structure answer?

JC and adult readers: treat pharmaceutical form as a latent variable connecting recipe grammar, material behaviour, storage technology and visual classification.

The Final Idea

The Grabadin gives us a different way of looking at a medieval technical book.

Not as a sequence of nouns.

As a sequence of transformations.

Raw substances become preparations.

Preparations acquire physical forms.

Physical forms determine handling.

Handling changes storage, dosage and administration.

That architecture existed in the same broad historical world as Voynich.

Now Voynich must do the hard part.

If its vessels, fragments and short texts encode pharmacy, the manuscript should contain recoverable structure connecting material class, preparation class and textual class. The Grabadin does not provide the answer. It provides the test.
