A human figure in a medical manuscript does not have to be a portrait.
It does not even have to be anatomy in the modern sense.
Sometimes the body is a map.
Wellcome MS.536 makes that clear immediately.
This late-thirteenth-century learned medical compendium opens with an illustration of a Vein Man accompanied by explanatory text. On the next folio is an astrological chart. What follows is not a narrow bloodletting manual but a large medical stack: uroscopy, diet, medicinal simples, recipes, surgery, antidotaries, Serapion and other learned material.
The opening pair therefore matters.
The body diagram is not floating alone.
It sits at the entrance to an information environment built to help a practitioner move between observation, classification, substances and action.
Wellcome MS.536 is a powerful Voynich control because it shows the body functioning as an interface inside a medical system, not merely as an illustration of the body.

Body diagram + astrology + medicine does not identify the Voynich. MS.536 tells us what medieval medicine could already do; it does not tell us where Beinecke MS 408 came from.
The Vein Man Is a Procedure Map
A Vein Man represents the body as a set of medically actionable locations.
The practitioner is not primarily being taught what a human looks like.
The image helps connect locations on the body to venesection practice.
That distinction is crucial.
Modern anatomy asks:
What structures are inside the body?
A procedural body diagram can instead ask:
Where may the practitioner intervene, under which conditions, and for what therapeutic purpose?
The body has become a coordinate surface.
That Changes How We Should Read Voynich Human Figures
The Voynich human figures are often forced into one of a few modern bins.
- anatomy;
- reproduction;
- bathing;
- mythology;
- decoration.
MS.536 inserts another documented role.
A body can be an operational diagram.
Position can carry meaning.
A body part can be a lookup coordinate.
A label can attach to a treatment point rather than name an organ.
The comparator does not tell us that this is what the Voynich nymphs are doing.
It tells us that a body-function hypothesis has to consider procedural mapping before declaring every figure anatomical or reproductive.
The Astrological Chart Is Beside the Body for a Reasonable Historical World
The next folio contains an astrological chart.
We should not over-interpret simple adjacency.
But the pairing belongs to a medical culture in which timing, celestial conditions and bodily intervention could interact.
Later folding almanacs and fifteenth-century astro-medical manuals make that integration explicit.
MS.536 shows that the intellectual neighbourhood is older.
Body mapping and celestial representation were not alien systems forced together by later superstition.
They could coexist inside learned medicine.
Then the Manuscript Moves Into Uroscopy
The Carmina de urinis of Gilles de Corbeil was a major component of medieval medical teaching.
Wellcome MS.536 contains commentary on its opening lines.
This adds a second diagnostic representation system.
The Vein Man maps intervention sites.
Uroscopy reads a bodily output.
One system uses space on the body.
The other uses the appearance of urine.
Both convert observation into medical inference.
This is useful for Voynich because a manuscript need not show internal anatomy to reason about internal state.
Diet Is Another Control Layer
MS.536 also contains the Flores dietarum.
Regimen and diet extend medicine beyond acute remedies.
The patient’s state depends on what enters the body, how daily life is organised and how humoral balance is managed.
This matters when comparing the Voynich’s plants, bodies and possible recipe pages.
A coherent medical system can contain preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic layers at once.
Circa Instans Builds the Substance Layer
Folios 13r–34 contain Matthaeus Platearius’s Circa instans, one of the central medieval works on simple medicines.
Now the manuscript has another capability.
Identify and reason about substances.
That substance layer can feed the recipe and antidotary layers that come later.
Again we see a workflow rather than a random anthology:
observe body → diagnose state → understand regimen → select simple medicine → prepare compound → intervene
Not every medieval compendium follows that exact sequence.
But the functional relations are real enough to make this a strong Voynich control.
Antidotarium Nicolai Turns Ingredients Into Compounds
Later in the codex, Nicholas of Salerno’s Antidotarium appears.
This is the transformation layer.
Simple substances become compound medicines.
Preparation rules matter.
Sequence matters.
Quantity matters.
The distinction is relevant to the Voynich pharmaceutical pages.
Vessels, roots and plant parts might belong to an ingredient-preparation interface rather than a separate “pharmacy subject.”
That hypothesis must be tested against text structure.
Serapion Extends the Medical World Across Translation Traditions
The manuscript also preserves part of Serapion Junior’s work on simple medicines.
This reminds us that medieval Latin medicine was deeply connected to Arabic medical and pharmacological traditions through translation and compilation.
A European manuscript can therefore host knowledge whose intellectual ancestry crossed languages and regions long before the physical codex was made.
This is one more reason not to infer the language or geography of underlying information from manuscript location alone.
The Manuscript Is a Strong Negative Control for Padua
The Padua hypothesis currently gains plausibility from the coexistence of medicine, astrology, pharmacy and university learning.
MS.536 is important because that combination already existed elsewhere and earlier.
Therefore none of these features has strong Paduan localisation value by itself:
- body diagrams;
- astrological charts;
- uroscopy;
- diet;
- simple medicines;
- antidotaries;
- Arabic-derived pharmacology.
Padua must win on more specific evidence.
What MS.536 Can Legitimately Teach Voynich Research
- A body image can function as a procedural coordinate system.
- Body mapping can coexist with astrological representation inside learned medicine.
- Diagnosis can rely on external signs rather than anatomical dissection.
- Regimen, plants, recipes, surgery and pharmacy can form one medical stack.
- Simple medicines and compound medicines are different layers of the same workflow.
- Arabic-derived medical knowledge could be integrated into Latin manuscript environments.
- These relationships were established long before the Voynich parchment window.
- Body imagery should therefore be tested for function, not classified by appearance alone.
What It Does Not Prove
- that Voynich figures are vein diagrams;
- that Voynich encodes bloodletting instructions;
- that its circular pages are astrological charts serving the same function;
- that its plant pages derive from Circa instans;
- that its vessels encode the Antidotarium Nicolai;
- that the Voynich is a university medical textbook;
- that broad medical integration identifies Padua.
The eduKate Body-Interface Test
- Build a corpus of Vein Men, Zodiac Men and wound/surgery body diagrams.
- Encode every labelled body position.
- Classify the role of each label: vein, sign, treatment, danger, disease or instruction.
- Measure how diagram topology changes across manuscript traditions.
- Separate body-shape resemblance from positional information.
- Encode Voynich human figures using the same neutral positional vocabulary.
- Test whether repeated positions correlate with repeated label classes.
- Reject body-map interpretations that do not produce consistent positional semantics.
- Keep anatomical, procedural, balneological and symbolic controls separate.
Student Lens: The Body Can Be a Map
Primary: mark mosquito-bite treatment spots on a body outline. The picture is a map for action, not an anatomy lesson.
Lower Secondary: compare an anatomical diagram with an acupuncture or first-aid point map and identify the different jobs.
Upper Secondary: separate visual object identity from functional coordinate structure.
JC and adult readers: treat body diagrams as spatial interfaces whose semantics live in the mapping between positions, labels and actions.

The Final Idea
The Vein Man is useful because it destroys a false choice.
A body image is not either anatomical or decorative.
It can be an instrument.
MS.536 puts that instrument beside astrology, diagnosis, diet, medicinal substances and compound preparations.
If the Voynich human figures belong to a medical system, the decisive evidence will be what their positions and labels consistently do—not simply what the bodies look like.
