How Trust Works | Trust Scope — Reliable for What?

You trust your friend completely.

Would you let them rewire your home?

You trust your mathematics teacher’s algebra.

Would you automatically trust their medical advice?

The feeling can be global.

The evidence rarely is.

Trust scope is the boundary around what a person or system has earned the right to be relied upon for—defined by task, context, time, stakes, role and the evidence actually available.

This is the first pillar beneath How Trust Works. The master owns trust broadly. This page owns the boundary question: reliable for what?

Trust should be calibrated by domain rather than treated as one global label. A person can be trustworthy with confidential information yet lack competence for financial decisions. A software tool can be dependable for routine formatting yet require independent checking for a high-stakes calculation. Useful socially.

Too broad operationally.

A better trust statement names the object:

I trust her to keep this confidence private.

I trust this teacher’s marking of routine algebra because the criteria are clear and previous checks have matched.

Scope turns a feeling into a testable reliance claim.

Competence Trust Is Domain-Specific

People often generalise competence because expertise looks like a stable trait.

But competence is structured.

  • A surgeon may be excellent at surgery and ordinary at investing.
  • A mathematics teacher may be excellent at algebra and unfamiliar with a new school administrative rule.
  • A high-performing student may solve routine questions well but struggle with unfamiliar transfer problems.

Calibrated trust asks:

what evidence supports competence for this exact job?

Integrity Can Generalise More—But Not Without Limits
