Tangential Voynich | What I Know About Myself May Be Wrong

Thesis: We do not encounter even ourselves without representation. Identity is compressed through memory, language, social feedback, repeated performance and expectation. That makes self-knowledge useful but not infallible. The same machinery that can misrepresent the self can also misrepresent an unknown manuscript.

This article connects Tangential Voynich back to eduKate’s earlier Vocabulary OS and Cognitive Art work on I, I AM, I CAN, CAN I? and AM I?.

“I” Is an Extraordinary Compression

One character can point toward an entire human being.

I

Behind that token sits a body, history, memory, skill profile, relationships, habits, fears, possibilities, injuries, beliefs, unrealised capacities and future states.

The token is useful because it compresses.

But compression removes detail.

When we say “I am good at this,” “I cannot do that,” “I am shy,” “I am fast,” or “I am bad at mathematics,” we are not directly reading an objective database of the self.

We are consulting a model.

A Self-Model Can Be Useful and Wrong

The self-model is not false merely because it is a model.

It is necessary. Human beings need compressed expectations about their abilities, preferences and limits in order to act.

But repeated experience can make a local observation feel like an identity.

The representation begins altering the reality it represents.

This is a special danger because self-models are not passive descriptions. They can influence training, effort, attention and opportunity.

The Bolt Problem

After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt was already the fastest man ever measured under championship conditions. Yet he told reporters, “I don’t know how fast I can go.” The remark is useful precisely because of who said it: one of the most measured sprinters in history still could not introspect his final physical ceiling.

A contemporary report preserved the quote after Beijing: ABC News, 23 August 2008. Later biomechanical studies could measure observed maximal sprint velocities—for example, analyses around 12.1–12.3 m/s under particular races and methods—but a measured historical maximum is still not identical to the maximum that could ever have been produced under every possible condition.

Bolt could know what he had done.

He could not know with certainty what he could ultimately do without returning to the world and running again.

World Return Beats Introspection

This is the crucial lesson.

If the question is “What is my maximum sprint speed?”, introspection alone cannot close it.

The answer requires experiment.

“I CAN” and “CAN I?” Are Different Machines

“I can” is a statement about the current self-model.

“Can I?” is a search instruction.

The first stabilises.

The second reopens the system.

Likewise:

I AM X

compresses identity.

AM I X?

turns the representation back toward evidence.

The question mark acts like a reopening operator.

Now Apply the Same Move to Voynich

“This is a plant” stabilises a visual model.

“Is this a plant?” reopens the evidence.

“These are words” stabilises a token model.

“Are these words?” reopens segmentation.

“This is astronomy” stabilises a semantic frame.

“What observations would distinguish astronomy from another radial representation?” creates an experiment.

The difference is not linguistic style.

It is system state.

The Observer Is Also a Representation System

Voynich research often talks as if there were a clean separation between objective manuscript and subjective observer.

But the observer arrives with compressed models.

  • what writing normally is;
  • what a word normally looks like;
  • what a plant normally looks like;
  • what medieval medicine normally contains;
  • what a map normally does;
  • what an illustrated book normally communicates.

These models are the observer’s equivalent of “I am.”

They are efficient summaries of past experience.

They can also be wrong for a new object.

Years of Normalisation Create a Hidden Prior

A literate adult has spent decades seeing text segmented into familiar units. A botanist has spent decades seeing plants through taxonomic and morphological categories. A historian has spent decades fitting artefacts into known traditions.

That expertise is indispensable.

It also means the expert carries very strong priors.

Normalisation is not merely bias in the negative sense. It is the compression that makes expertise possible. Tangential Voynich does not try to delete expertise. It tries to make the compression visible enough to test.

The Self and Voynich Share an Epistemic Structure

The connection can be written explicitly.

In both cases, the representation is useful.

In both cases, mistaking the representation for the full underlying reality produces overconfidence.

Capability Is a Latent Variable

Bolt’s true maximum capability was not directly observable as a permanent number inside him. It had to be inferred from performances under conditions.

Likewise, the true generative structure of Voynich is latent.

We see outputs.

We infer the hidden system.

In both cases, one observation establishes a floor, not necessarily a ceiling.

One successful interpretation establishes compatibility, not uniqueness.

One failed attempt establishes failure under those conditions, not universal impossibility.

The Anti-Identity Protocol

For ourselves and for Voynich, replace fixed identity statements with testable state statements.

“I AM BAD AT X”
→
“UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, MY OBSERVED PERFORMANCE ON X HAS BEEN Y.”
“THIS IS A PLANT”
→
“THIS FORM SHARES THESE MEASURED FEATURES WITH THESE KNOWN PLANT REPRESENTATIONS.”

The longer sentence feels less elegant.

It is also harder for the representation to become identity.

World Return

Usain Bolt’s remark is powerful because the fastest observed human could still distinguish measurement from possibility.

He knew the record.

He did not pretend the record was the final boundary of himself.

That is the posture Tangential Voynich needs.

We know what the manuscript has shown under our current representations.

We do not yet know the full system capable of producing it.

What we know about Voynich may be wrong in the same ordinary way that what we know about ourselves can be wrong: the representation has become normal enough to feel like reality.

The cure is not permanent doubt.

It is World Return.

Ask.

Test.

Measure.

Update.

Then ask again.
