Voynich and Padua | The Null Coordinate: Why “We Cannot Localise This Layer Yet” Is a Valid Result

A blank coordinate feels unfinished.

That feeling is dangerous.

Once a research programme has spent enough time in Padua, Vienna, Prague, Germany and northern Italy, the mind wants every layer of the Voynich to belong somewhere.

Plant ancestry: choose a place.

Scribe training: choose a place.

Assembly: choose a place.

Ownership: choose a place.

But sometimes the evidence does not discriminate.

Then the correct coordinate is not the best-looking candidate.

It is null.

The Null Coordinate means: this layer exists, the question is meaningful, candidates may be historically plausible, but the current evidence does not justify assigning one geographic value.

Null Is Not Ignorance Without Structure

There is a difference between:

We have no idea.

and:

We have compared Padua, Vienna, Bologna, Prague, Pavia, Venice, Germany and Bohemia; several explain the observed feature; no surviving independent parameter currently discriminates among them.

The second is a strong research state.

It records what was tested.

It records why the coordinate remains empty.

And it records what kind of evidence could fill it later.

The Coordinate Stack Needs Null Values

The Coordinate Stack separates nine historical questions.

Not all nine are currently locatable.

CoordinatePossible current state
C1 · Knowledge ancestrySeveral plausible traditions; may be multi-source or null at precise geography.
C2 · Text originNull while Voynichese remains unread and no secure source text is identified.
C3 · Image ancestryComparator families exist; precise descent can remain null.
C4 · Scribe trainingFive hands can be distinguished while geographic training remains null.
C5 · Physical productionEarly fifteenth century materially; geographic coordinate remains null.
C6 · AssemblyPartly reconstructable; assembly geography can remain null.
C7 · BindingBinding states may be separable without secure local assignment.
C8 · Early ownershipMajor fifteenth-century gap; null until documentary evidence appears.
C9 · Later receptionBetter documented and therefore less null.

This is not failure.

It is a map with honest empty cells.

Why Humans Dislike Null Coordinates

Stories prefer completion.

A route with a missing station feels broken.

A table with an empty field feels unfinished.

A provenance chain with a missing century invites repair.

But research does not improve when an empty field is filled with the most plausible guess and the guess later becomes invisible.

The empty field is information.

It tells us exactly where the evidence chain stops.

Null Is Different From “Possible”

Padua can be possible while C5 physical production remains null.

Vienna can be possible while C5 remains null.

A northern-Italian image ancestry can be plausible while C3 precise origin remains null.

Candidate ranking and coordinate assignment are different operations.

A candidate may lead the field without having crossed the threshold required to occupy the coordinate.

Pal. lat. 1284 Shows the Principle in a Known Manuscript

Pal. lat. 1284 contains Niccolò Santasofia’s Receptarium and other Paduan-linked medicine.

The intellectual association is real.

The catalogue heading does not supply one secure production city for the whole object.

The correct response is not to fill the blank with Padua.

The production coordinate remains unresolved at that descriptive level.

If we can tolerate that restraint for a readable known manuscript, we should tolerate it even more readily for the Voynich.

Null Prevents the Receiver Fallacy

The Receiver Fallacy happens when transmitted knowledge supplies the geography that the physical object has not supplied.

The Null Coordinate blocks that move.

Paduan text ancestry can be recorded in C2.

C5 physical production can remain null.

No contradiction exists.

Null Prevents Path Inflation Too

The Minimum Path Principle says we should not add handoffs unless the evidence needs them.

A common temptation is to replace an unknown with a new stage:

“Perhaps this unexplained feature came from Vienna.”

“Perhaps this hand was German.”

“Perhaps the binding was Venetian.”

Those can be valid hypotheses.

But a hypothesis does not have to become a path node.

Until evidence distinguishes it, null is cheaper and more accurate.

Null Is Not Neutral Between All Possibilities

This distinction matters.

Suppose Padua explains more evidence than Vienna, but still not enough to secure C5.

The coordinate can remain null while Padua remains the leading hypothesis.

Null does not erase comparative ranking.

It marks the threshold between:

best current candidate

and:

evidence sufficient to assign the coordinate.

A Coordinate Needs an Assignment Threshold

Each coordinate should have a rule for when null can be replaced.

CoordinateExample assignment threshold
C3 image ancestryMultiple rare linked correspondences plus a plausible descent chain outperform rival image families.
C4 scribe trainingA stable palaeographical bundle matches a regional corpus under blinded comparison.
C5 physical productionSeveral independent material/codicological signals converge on one region and matched controls fail.
C6 assemblyPhysical structure identifies a distinct assembly event and local evidence constrains its place.
C8 ownershipA secure documentary record or ownership mark tied to the actual object.

The exact thresholds can be refined.

The important thing is that a threshold exists before assignment.

Null Values Preserve Future Discoveries

An invented coordinate contaminates later reasoning.

Once “probably Padua” is stored as “Padua,” future researchers search for confirmation.

They retrieve Paduan comparators.

They interpret ambiguous script through a Paduan lens.

They explain German features as foreign scribes.

The null value keeps the search space open.

It preserves surprise.

The Null Coordinate and Expected Evidence

The Expected Evidence Problem tells us when a candidate should lose confidence.

The Null Coordinate tells us what happens next.

We do not have to promote the runner-up immediately.

We can return the coordinate to null.

This is crucial.

Scientific updating is not always:

A was wrong, therefore B is right.

Sometimes it is:

A weakened; B still insufficient; coordinate unresolved.

The eduKate Null-Coordinate Protocol

  1. Name the coordinate being evaluated.
  2. List current candidate values.
  3. Record the evidence supporting each candidate.
  4. Run matched controls and independence checks.
  5. Define the assignment threshold before choosing.
  6. If no candidate crosses the threshold, store null.
  7. Preserve rankings separately from assignment.
  8. Record what evidence could convert null into a value.
  9. Do not use a narrative preference to fill null.
  10. Re-open the coordinate when new evidence arrives.

A Better Public Status for Voynich Localisation

Instead of:

Voynich was made in Padua.

Or:

Voynich was not made in Padua.

The present evidence state can be expressed more accurately:

Padua remains a developed and testable historical candidate for several Voynich-relevant layers. The physical-production coordinate remains unassigned because the surviving public evidence does not yet discriminate strongly enough.

The Final Idea

Unknown is not a hole in the research.

Unknown is one of the allowed outputs of the research.

A coordinate should stay empty until the evidence—not our need for completion—puts something there.
