The Voynich human figures are easy to over-read because bodies feel literal.
A body looks like a body.
So we ask about anatomy.
Reproduction.
Bathing.
Disease.
But a medieval body can also be an interface.
Vatican Pal. lat. 1293 gives us an unusually sharp control for that possibility.
Heidelberg catalogues the volume as Collectanea practicae medicinalis, Vol. II, produced in southern Germany around 1400. The opening folio is especially striking: a drawing described as a Schmerzensmann—the Man of Sorrows—is paired with a list of diseases.
That one page is enough to force an important methodological correction.
A human figure in a medieval medical manuscript can be devotional in visual ancestry, medical in use, and indexical in function at the same time.

The Body Can Be a Retrieval Surface
The strongest lesson from Pal. lat. 1293 is functional.
A body image can organise attention.
The user does not need to read it as a portrait.
The user can read the body as a surface on which conditions, wounds, symptoms, dangers or treatment sites are conceptually placed.
This is the same broad interface class later seen in Vein Men, Zodiac Men and Wound Men, but Pal. lat. 1293 is valuable because the image begins from a devotional motif rather than a clean technical diagram.
That means visual ancestry and medical function can diverge.
A Devotional Image Can Be Re-Hosted Into Medicine
The Man of Sorrows belongs to a Christian devotional image tradition.
Yet here it appears in a medical collectanea beside a disease list.
That re-hosting matters enormously for Voynich comparison.
An image’s original iconographic family does not necessarily determine its later technical job.
A copied body form can be repurposed.
A familiar motif can become a memory scaffold.
A symbolic figure can acquire an indexing function.
So when a Voynich figure resembles something from another genre, the strongest question is not:
What picture was this copied from?
It is:
What information role does this figure perform in its present manuscript?
Around 1400 Matters
Pal. lat. 1293 is close to the Voynich period without being inside the Padua network.
That makes it a strong matched control.
Before the 1404 Carrara inventory.
Before the 1405 Paduan political rupture.
Before the 1410s–1430s Padua medical objects now populating the hub.
Southern Germany already has a practical medical manuscript using a body-image interface.
Therefore the following features have weak localising value:
- medical body imagery;
- disease lists;
- image–text association;
- hybrid devotional–technical iconography.
Padua must beat this alternative with more specific evidence.
The Image Does Not Need to Be Anatomically Correct
This point is subtle but important.
If an image functions as an index or mnemonic scaffold, anatomical realism is not necessarily the design goal.
The body needs to be recognisable enough to support spatial association.
That means distorted or stylised bodies can still carry technical information.
This is relevant to the Voynich nymphs, whose proportions and poses are often awkward.
Awkward anatomy does not automatically imply failed drawing.
It may reflect another information priority.
But Interface Is Not a Free Pass
Once we allow figures to function as interfaces, interpretation can become too flexible.
So the hypothesis must produce predictions.
- Repeated positions should correlate with repeated label classes.
- Similar figures should carry comparable information roles.
- Text associated with body regions should differ systematically from general prose.
- Figure order should support a stable classification or workflow.
- Out-of-sample pages should preserve the same mapping rules.
If none of those survive, “the body is an interface” becomes too weak to explain anything.
A Matched Control Against the Padua Body Hypothesis
Padua offers genuine body-related medical contexts.
Astrological medicine.
Balneology.
Clinical cases.
Surgery.
But Pal. lat. 1293 demonstrates that body-based medical representation is not unique to that environment.
The Padua hypothesis therefore cannot count “medical body images existed” as meaningful localisation evidence.
It needs a rarer conjunction.
What Pal. lat. 1293 Adds
- A southern-German practical medical manuscript exists around 1400.
- Its opening uses a human body image beside a disease list.
- The image derives from a devotional visual tradition.
- A non-medical visual form can therefore be re-hosted into medical use.
- The body can act as a classification or retrieval surface without modern anatomical realism.
- This behaviour predates the Voynich parchment window.
- It weakens any claim that body-image interfaces are uniquely Paduan.
What It Does Not Add
- No direct link to the Voynich figures.
- No shared script or language.
- No common owner or exemplar.
- No proof that Voynich bodies index diseases.
- No reason to identify Voynich imagery as Christian devotional imagery.
- No reason to infer southern-German provenance from generic body-image behaviour.
The eduKate Body-Index Test
- Build a corpus of medical body images from c.1300–1450.
- Separate visual ancestry from medical function.
- Encode body positions and associated labels.
- Measure whether conditions, treatments or categories map consistently to positions.
- Compare technical, devotional and hybrid body-image controls.
- Encode Voynich figures with the same neutral positional system.
- Test whether the Voynich shows stable body-position semantics.
- Reject body-index interpretations that cannot generalise beyond a few attractive figures.

The Final Idea
Pal. lat. 1293 makes one thing much harder to ignore.
A body does not need to depict the body.
It can organise knowledge about the body.
If the Voynich figures are informational surfaces, the proof will lie in repeated mappings between position, label and function—not in whether one body happens to resemble a known medical picture.
