A communication receipt is observable evidence of what the receiver actually reconstructed from a message, not merely evidence that the signal was sent or acknowledged.

Quick Read
Communication succeeds only when the receiver reconstructs enough of the intended meaning to perform the next job. “Yes,” silence, eye contact or a delivered email are weak receipts because they can indicate many things. Stronger receipts match the communication goal. For instructions, ask the receiver to explain or demonstrate the next step. For high-stakes numeric or safety messages, use read-back or repeat-back. For teaching, use teach-back, worked examples or transfer to a changed case. For emotional communication, accurate paraphrase may matter more than behavioural execution. The point is not to test people constantly. It is to choose the lightest receipt strong enough for the consequence of misunderstanding.

Delivery Receipt Is Not Meaning Receipt
Email delivered.
Message opened.
Blue tick appears.
These may prove channel delivery.
They do not prove:
- attention;
- understanding;
- agreement;
- memory;
- correct next action.
Acknowledgement Is Not Agreement
“I understand what you are asking” is different from “I agree with it.”
This distinction matters because receivers sometimes avoid showing understanding when they fear acknowledgement will be treated as surrender.
A useful sequence is:
reconstruct → acknowledge → evaluate → agree or disagree → explain why.
Paraphrase Is a Low-Cost Meaning Receipt
Instead of asking:
Do you understand?
Ask:
What do you think I am asking you to do?
Now the receiver exposes their reconstruction.
The sender can compare it with the intended meaning before error travels further.
Read-Back Protects Exact Information
Some messages contain values where small errors matter:
- time;
- date;
- address;
- quantity;
- sequence;
- critical identifier.
Receiver repeats the information.
Sender confirms or corrects it.
The receipt protects exactness rather than broad conceptual understanding.
Teach-Back Tests a Deeper Reconstruction
A learner repeats the teacher’s exact sentence.
That may show memory.
A stronger receipt is:
Explain it in your own words and show me an example.
This reveals whether the learner reconstructed the underlying relationship rather than merely echoed the signal.
Changed Cases Are Stronger Than Repetition
Original instruction:
learner follows the demonstrated case.
Changed case:
learner must decide whether the same rule applies.
Transfer provides stronger evidence that meaning crossed.
Behaviour Is Often the Best Operational Receipt
If the message was intended to enable action, inspect the action.
Instruction:
Save the file in the shared folder using this naming format.
Receipt:
the file appears in the correct place with the correct name.
The receipt is tied to the job.
Emotional Communication Needs a Different Receipt
Someone says:
I am worried that I am falling behind.
The receipt may be:
You are not asking me to solve everything immediately; you want me to understand that the current pace feels unmanageable. Is that right?
Here the job is accurate acknowledgement before problem-solving.
Silence Is a Weak Receipt
Silence may mean:
- agreement;
- confusion;
- fear;
- distraction;
- reflection;
- resistance;
- nothing to add.
When the distinction matters, use a more discriminating receipt.
Power Makes Polite Agreement Less Reliable
A student tells a teacher “yes.”
An employee tells a manager “understood.”
The statement may be genuine—or socially safer than admitting confusion.
The fourth sibling, Correction Rights, owns whether the receiver can safely question or correct the sender.
High Stakes Need Stronger Receipts
Casual invitation:
light receipt.
Complex homework instruction:
paraphrase or first-step demonstration.
Safety-critical instruction:
repeat-back, verification and observed execution.

Receipts Should Not Become Constant Testing
Checking every sentence would destroy conversational flow.
Use receipts at:
- critical decisions;
- new procedures;
- high-stakes values;
- known ambiguity points;
- expert–novice boundaries;
- after visible misunderstanding.
Communication Receipt Is Not General Assessment
Assessment asks whether a learner has developed capability more broadly.
Communication Receipts ask a narrower question:
what meaning did this receiver reconstruct from this message, now?
The receipt can reveal a communication failure even when the person is generally capable.
Feedback and Receipt Are Related but Different

A communication receipt is one specific feedback object used to inspect the receiver’s reconstruction.
Relay Chains Need Receipts at Critical Hops

A familiar low-stakes phrase may need none.

- Job: what should communication enable?

For Primary Readers
If someone says “yes” after you explain a game, you still do not know whether they understood the rules. Ask them to show the first move or explain the rule back in their own words.
For Secondary Readers
Compare “Do you understand?” with paraphrase, demonstration and transfer. Explain which receipt gives stronger evidence for different communication jobs.
For Advanced Readers
Model communication receipts as observations of the receiver’s latent reconstruction. Receipt quality depends on how discriminating the observation is among competing interpretations; high-consequence communication therefore warrants stronger closed-loop evidence than low-stakes exchanges.
Final Thought: A Message Is Not Finished When It Leaves the Sender
The most important communication question is not “Did I send it?” but “What evidence do I have about what arrived—and is that evidence strong enough for what happens next?”
