The danger is not only that the Voynich Manuscript looks strange. The danger is that we may be using the wrong century to decide what “strange” means.

Open a modern technical book and we carry a large invisible contract into the page. We expect a title. We expect a subject. We expect sections to stay mostly inside that subject. We expect an illustration to illustrate. A calendar should look like a calendar. A medical book should not suddenly become a price table. A diagram should probably respect geometry. A portable reference work should look like something designed for portable reference. A page that has been amended by several people across generations may feel untidy, compromised or corrupted.
Those expectations are not foolish. They belong to real modern publishing systems. The problem begins when they quietly become universal laws of what a serious information object ought to look like.
The Voynich Manuscript is particularly vulnerable to this error because almost everything about it invites classification. Its pages contain dense unfamiliar writing, repeated visual forms, circular constructions, human figures, apparent plants, vessel-like forms, foldouts and other arrangements that resemble several known historical worlds without securely identifying themselves as any one of them.
So this continuation asks a controlled question:
Which things that look unusual to us can be shown, from documented manuscripts around the early fifteenth century, to have ordinary historical parallels?
That question is deliberately weaker than “What is Voynich?” It does not ask the period to solve the manuscript. It asks the period to remove false anomalies.
If a feature that looks bizarre to a modern reader turns out to have many historically ordinary counterparts, the feature loses some power as evidence for exceptional origin. It may still be important. It may still carry meaning. It may still turn out to be unusual in its precise combination. But the investigation has become better calibrated.
The opposite is equally important. A historical parallel does not make Voynich ordinary, and a possibility documented somewhere around 1400 does not make that possibility the explanation of Beinecke MS 408. This article therefore treats each example as a control on our expectations, not as a birth certificate.
Evidence boundary: the historical examples below are documented objects from major institutional collections. They show that particular practices existed. They do not establish how common those practices were across all of Europe, nor do they prove that Voynich belongs to the same genre, place, workshop or use. No new Voynich decoding, blind test, provenance result or semantic identification is claimed here.
1. “Normal” Is Not One Medieval State
The first correction is obvious but important: there was no single person in 1400 who can stand in for everybody else.
A court patron in Paris, a medical practitioner in England, a student in Padua, a monk, an apothecary, an urban notary, a travelling scholar and a household reader could encounter very different books and possess very different visual habits. Even within one region, manuscript function, price, audience and degree of finish could vary enormously.
The phrase period eye is therefore useful only if we resist turning it into a costume. We are not pretending to recover one fifteenth-century consciousness. We are reconstructing documented expectations from documented objects, then asking whether a modern reaction of “that is weird” survives the comparison.
The right form of historical control sounds like this:
- This practice is documented in this object.
- This object is dated or otherwise situated within this historical range.
- This feature performs this recorded or inferable job in that object.
- Therefore the same broad feature cannot be treated as intrinsically impossible, irrational or uniquely Voynich.
- Whether Voynich uses it for the same purpose remains a separate question.
That last line prevents almost every control in this article from turning into an identification.
2. Around 1400, a Picture Could Be Elegant and Spatially Strange at the Same Time
One modern instinct is to treat awkward spatial construction as evidence that an image is crude, incompetent or unreal. Yet late-fourteenth- and early-fifteenth-century elite art gives us a direct warning.
The National Gallery describes what art historians call International Gothic as a courtly style extending from the late fourteenth into the mid-fifteenth century. It combines decorative stylisation, rich colour and gold with passages that may be spatially illogical while still containing finely observed naturalistic detail. The term itself is modern art-historical language, not a label medieval makers used for themselves.
The Gallery’s detailed study of the Wilton Diptych likewise places it in the fashionable courtly environment of the late fourteenth century, with refined decorative effects, rich fabrics, jewels, architecture and close attention to plants and animals.
The Metropolitan Museum gives a related description for manuscript illumination in northern Europe. Around 1400, courtly work could combine elegant, sinuous figures and decorative colour with selective realism in animals, insects and plants. The Met’s manuscript-illumination essay uses the Limbourg brothers’ Belles Heures of about 1406–1408/9 as a major example.
This creates a useful control for Voynich.
An image can contain careful observation and nonmodern spatial logic at the same time. We should therefore be cautious with arguments of the form: “This part looks naturalistic, so the whole image must obey naturalistic representation,” or its reverse, “The spatial arrangement is odd, so the maker could not have been observing real objects.”
The correct next question is narrower. Which particular feature is being claimed as observationally faithful? Which feature is being claimed as schematic? Can those roles be recovered consistently across multiple examples? A broad stylistic possibility does not tell us how a specific Voynich page works, but it does weaken the assumption that realism and schematic construction must exclude each other.
3. A Serious Information Object Could Mix Things We Would Shelve Separately
Modern catalogues encourage subject discipline. We have medicine shelves, astronomy shelves, law shelves and economics shelves. That organisation is extremely useful. It can also make a mixed historical manuscript look suspiciously incoherent when the incoherence belongs partly to our shelving system.
British Library Harley MS 2332, dated 1411–1412, is a particularly sharp counterexample. The small illustrated almanac contains a calendar, dominical-letter table, solar and lunar eclipse diagrams, a zodiacal chart, a Zodiac Man, lunar-zodiacal correspondences and prognostication material. But that is not all.
The same manuscript also contains a pictorial chronology of historical and biblical events, portraits of English kings, a table for calculating the prices of bread and corn, text from the Statute of Winchester and the Assize of Bread, and an astronomical volvelle.
If a modern reader encountered an unknown codex that moved from eclipse diagrams to royal chronology to grain prices to law, “miscellaneous” might be the first response. Yet here the British Library catalogue gives us a real early-fifteenth-century information object in which these materials coexist.
This does not prove that any Voynich section belongs with any other in the same way. It does something more modest and more useful: it removes the rule that one coherent historical book must map cleanly onto one modern academic department.
A mixed-content hypothesis must still earn its structure. Why are these particular things together? What does their arrangement let the user do? Which sections appear planned together, and which are later additions? “Medieval books mixed subjects” is not an explanation. It is permission to ask the next question without treating mixture itself as evidence of nonsense.
4. A Calendar Could Be a Visual Machine
Modern calendars are so familiar that the word summons a grid. Yet early-fifteenth-century calendars could organise time through a much richer visual interface.
British Library Royal MS 17 A XVI includes a pictorial astronomical calendar for 1420. The calendar lays dates across an opening and combines them with pictograms of saints and their attributes, the occupations of the months and signs of the Zodiac. It also records hours and minutes of daylight, golden numbers, dominical letters and cycles of conjunctions of the sun and moon.
The same codex includes astronomical diagrams, notes on Arabic numerals, a diagram concerning the division of the world, religious and other verses, eclipse material, fixed-star information, latitudes of towns and a Zodiac Man.
To a modern eye, pictures of saints, monthly labour scenes, zodiac signs and numerical astronomy may feel like separate representational languages. In the documented manuscript, they participate in one working temporal environment.
The lesson for Voynich is not “its circles are calendars.” It is that we should not assume a serious calendrical or astronomical interface must look predominantly numerical, nor that a pictorial element is merely decorative because it appears beside computation.
A picture can be part of retrieval. A symbol can point to a recurring cycle. A figure can coordinate a body with a celestial scheme. The question is functional relation: what does the arrangement allow its intended user to find, compare or decide?
5. A Human Body Could Be an Astronomical-Medical Interface
One of the strongest examples of a modern category boundary failing is the Zodiac Man.
Wellcome Collection’s account of an English folding almanac from about 1415–1420 describes a portable manuscript containing calendar information, astrological tables and diagrams used for diagnosis and prognostication. Wellcome’s explanatory essay, The Enigma of the Medieval Folding Almanac, explains that such almanacs could combine astrological calendars, lunar and solar tables, body diagrams and religious feast days in a medical-practical context.
The Zodiac Man places zodiac signs on particular regions of a human body in relation to the timing of medical procedures such as bloodletting. In a modern disciplinary map, astrology and medicine are sharply separated. In the historical object, the relationship is operational.
This is exactly the sort of control that prevents an easy genre jump. If a Voynich page contains a human figure, a circular arrangement and celestial-looking signs, recognising those ingredients does not by itself identify whether the page is astronomical, medical, calendrical, devotional, symbolic or something else.
The image has to be read as an interface. What variables are being connected? Which relationships recur? Is there evidence of timing, body location, sequence, grouping or decision support? Without those connections, the broad resemblance remains a comparison, not a function.
The period control therefore makes the interpretation both freer and stricter. Freer, because medicine and celestial imagery need not be treated as incompatible. Stricter, because the historical example gives us a concrete mechanism against which a proposed relationship can be tested.
6. A Portable Book Could Unfold Like an Instrument
The physical behaviour of a manuscript can be part of the information system.
Wellcome’s 1415–1420 English folding almanac is a striking example. Its sheets were made to fold into a compact portable object while preserving access to calendrical, astrological and medical information. The broader folding-almanac tradition includes leaves that could be carried on the body and unfolded for consultation.
A later fifteenth-century Wellcome example, MS.40, makes the physical logic especially clear. The folio sheets fold repeatedly into a much smaller format, and the cover includes a tag so that the manuscript could be suspended from a cord. This example is later than the Voynich parchment window and is included here only as evidence for the continuing folding-almanac interface, not as a period-exact match.
The control matters because the Voynich foldouts are easy to flatten mentally into large pictures. A digital scan is excellent at showing what is on the surface when fully open. It is less good at reminding us that the historical interface involved hands, folds, concealment, reveal and changing adjacency.
The existing article What Can a Scan Know? separates image content from physical interaction. The period-eye control now adds another question: was changing the visible state of a manuscript through folding already a documented way of organising technical information? Yes, in at least some manuscript traditions.
That does not make the Voynich foldouts almanacs. It simply prevents the moving interface from being treated as inherently exotic.
7. A Book Could Continue Growing After Its First Making
A modern printed edition encourages the idea that a book is finished before it reaches its readers. Manuscripts complicate that boundary.
Wellcome Collection describes a manuscript of tables and treatises on calendar computation, astronomy and astrology dating from about 1425. Among its contents are eclipse tables for 1425–1443 and 1444–1462. Later generations continued to use the object, and the manuscript contains medical recipes added in the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries.
This is not evidence that every medieval manuscript should be treated as an accretion. It is evidence that accretion is historically real. A manuscript can acquire new uses and new writing without becoming a completely different physical object.
The distinction is crucial for Voynich because several evidence clocks may coexist: parchment production, original writing and drawing, paint, assembly, later numbering, marginal additions, rebinding, ownership marks and damage. A later addition should not automatically be made to explain the earlier system, and an early component should not automatically date every later intervention.
The period eye therefore does not ask, “Is the manuscript one moment or many?” as though those were exclusive options. It asks which layer each observation belongs to and what evidence connects the layers.
This is a more demanding question because it removes one of the easiest narrative shortcuts: forcing every visible feature to share one maker, one date and one function.
8. “Mixed Language” and “Mixed Script” Need Not Mean a Failed System
Historical manuscripts can preserve multiple languages, scripts, abbreviation systems and later hands. The existence of such mixture is therefore not automatically evidence of incoherence.
Harley MS 2332, for example, is catalogued with both Latin and Middle English. Royal MS 17 A XVI contains Latin materials alongside English verse and other additions. Wellcome’s c.1425 astronomical manuscript later accumulated English recipes despite the main body being in Latin.
This does not solve the Voynich language question. Voynichese remains unidentified. The point is narrower: the appearance of more than one language or writing regime in a manuscript is not intrinsically anomalous for the period.
It also warns against using every readable later word as a key to the unreadable main text. A marginal word can belong to another hand, another moment and another reader. The public article Marginalia and the Later Hands keeps those layers separate.
The same discipline applies inside the main writing. Apparent graphic populations need not equal languages. A change in hand need not equal a change in subject. A change in subject need not equal a new production location. Each relation must be tested rather than assumed.
A period eye makes mixture less alarming. An evidence ledger keeps us from turning that tolerance into an unlimited explanation.
9. A Diagram Could Be Useful Without Looking Like a Modern Scientific Diagram
Modern technical diagrams often privilege scale, geometric consistency, labelled axes and explicit legends. Historical diagrams can organise knowledge differently.
Royal MS 17 A XVI combines pictograms, tables, zodiac imagery, astronomical cycles and a volvelle. Harley MS 2332 similarly joins circular diagrams, body imagery, pictorial chronology and calculation. These examples remind us that a diagram can be an operational surface without obeying the expectations of a modern engineering drawing.
This does not mean spatial inconsistency is meaningless. It changes the question. Instead of asking whether the picture accurately represents physical space, ask what relationships it preserves. Order? Membership? Correspondence? Cycle? Sequence? Choice? Timing? Relative position? A diagram can sacrifice one type of geometry to preserve another type of relation.
The same caution belongs to the Voynich rosettes foldout and other circular pages. Calling an image a map, cosmology or machine merely because it has connected regions is too fast. But dismissing it because its space is unlike a modern map can be equally fast.
The historically calibrated question is: what kinds of relations did comparable diagrams actually encode, and which of those relations can be measured here without already assuming the answer?
That is where the alien eye and period eye converge. First describe the geometry without a name. Then admit historically documented diagram families. Finally, ask which feature distinguishes them.
10. A Beautiful Manuscript Could Still Be Functional
Another modern false choice separates utility from luxury. A technical object is expected to look efficient; a lavish object is expected to look ceremonial or decorative.
The period does not respect that division consistently. The Wellcome folding-almanac story describes a 1415–1420 English almanac with elaborate materials and high-quality illustration while also explaining the practical astrological-medical information such objects could provide. The object’s beauty and its information function are not mutually exclusive.
The Met’s manuscript-illumination material provides the complementary courtly side: luxurious manuscripts could be important personal, devotional, dynastic or intellectual possessions. A high degree of finish can therefore tell us about patronage, value and attention without determining one exclusive use.
For Voynich, the implication is methodological. Uneven finish does not prove utilitarian use, and visual elaboration does not prove ceremonial display. We should ask where labour was allocated, which surfaces received precision, which details were corrected, and whether those choices align with a proposed function.
The existing Courtly Luxury Object and Made Simply to Sit There and Fascinate? tangents explore these possibilities from the object-world side. The present article does not promote either. It only removes the assumption that usefulness and prestige occupy opposite ends of one scale.
11. A Reader Might Need Prior Knowledge That the Page Does Not Explain
Modern educational publishing often tries to make a page self-sufficient. Headings define sections. Legends explain symbols. Captions clarify images. Terminology is introduced before use. These are excellent practices for many modern readers.
A historical working object may assume more prior competence. A Zodiac Man does not necessarily teach astrology from first principles. An eclipse table may assume the user knows how to read the table. A volvelle may require an operating convention. A calendar can compress relationships into symbols familiar to its intended community.
This possibility matters because Voynich lacks an obvious title page, explicit legend and secure key. Those absences can feel like evidence that the book is deliberately opaque. They may be. But opacity is not the only possibility.
A missing receiver is a competing explanation: perhaps some parts of the interface were legible only to a reader with shared training. The article The Original Receiver Is Missing develops that problem.
Yet the missing reader cannot become magic. A receiver hypothesis should specify what knowledge is required, where that knowledge could plausibly come from, which conventions would need to be stable and what the page would allow that trained reader to do.
If every unexplained feature requires a separate invisible convention, the receiver hypothesis is not simplifying the problem. It is relocating it.
12. A Book Could Behave More Like a Tool Than a Narrative
Many modern readers approach an unfamiliar manuscript by asking what the text says from beginning to end. That is natural when the object is treated primarily as prose.
The early-fifteenth-century almanacs above suggest another possibility for some historical books: the user may retrieve rather than read continuously. A calendar, body diagram, table, volvelle and prognostication scheme can support different operations. The book becomes an interface across which the reader moves according to a task.
This does not mean Voynich is an almanac or tool. It means continuous narrative should not be the default against which every page is judged.
Several Voynich observations become more interesting under this control. Short labels may need to be analysed differently from running text. A foldout may organise navigation differently from an ordinary folio. Repeated star-like markers may structure items without telling us what those items mean. Different page populations may have different entry points.
The proper test is behavioural. Does the proposed tool model predict how layout, labels, boundaries and recurrence should interact? Does it explain something that a prose model does not? Can it survive held-out pages? Until those tests succeed, “tool” remains a useful comparator rather than an identity.
13. The Strange Combination May Matter More Than the Strange Parts
Historical controls often have a surprising effect on the Voynich problem. One by one, many supposedly extraordinary ingredients become less extraordinary.
- Zodiac imagery is ordinary enough to require functional discrimination.
- Human figures can belong inside medical-astrological systems.
- Illustrated calendars can combine pictorial and numerical information.
- Books can mix subjects we now separate.
- Portable technical manuscripts can fold and unfold.
- Manuscripts can accumulate later additions.
- Different languages and hands can inhabit one codex.
- Decorative elegance and practical use can coexist.
- Spatially nonmodern imagery can coexist with close natural observation.
It would be a mistake to conclude that Voynich is therefore ordinary. The more interesting question is whether the joint configuration is ordinary.
A theory should not gain too much credit for explaining one common feature at a time. It should explain why this manuscript combines these particular textual, visual, physical and organisational properties in the way it does.
This is the same logic behind the public Joint Benchmark Problem. Passing several independent-looking tests does not necessarily explain the manuscript if the model fails the relationships among them.
Period calibration therefore changes the location of the mystery. The mystery may not be that the manuscript contains a zodiac-like circle, body figures, plants, vessels, diagrams or specialised writing. The difficult question may be how those populations belong together, and whether they belong together for one purpose at all.
The strange parts become less strange. The architecture can become more important.
14. What We Should Stop Calling Evidence
Once these controls are admitted, several easy arguments lose force.
“The image is spatially odd, therefore it cannot be serious observation.”
Too strong. Courtly visual culture around 1400 gives documented cases of decorative stylisation and nonmodern spatial logic alongside carefully observed natural detail. We still need to test the particular image, but spatial strangeness alone is weaker evidence than it first appears.
“Medicine and astrology together are too strange.”
Not as a general historical combination. Folding almanacs and Zodiac Man traditions provide direct controls. The real question is whether Voynich exhibits the operational relationships that would make the comparison useful.
“A useful book would stay in one subject.”
Harley MS 2332 is enough to defeat that as a universal claim. Astronomy, chronology, royal imagery, law and price calculation can share one small illustrated almanac. That does not make every mixture coherent, but it makes subject mixture historically admissible.
“Later additions mean the original system failed.”
Not necessarily. Manuscripts could continue to accumulate useful material. The important task is stratigraphy: identify which layer each addition belongs to and avoid making later material explain earlier design without evidence.
“A body plus zodiac signs tells us the whole genre.”
No. The motif can participate in medical, calendrical and astrological operations. Function has to be recovered from relationships, not from the motif alone.
“No legend means no real system.”
Too strong. A technical interface can assume trained use. But a missing-receiver hypothesis must itself be constrained by evidence; it cannot become a universal rescue.
15. What the Period Eye Must Not Be Allowed to Do
Historical context is powerful because it makes unfamiliar things less automatically strange. That power can also become dangerous.
Once enough unusual practices have been documented, almost any Voynich feature can be surrounded by something vaguely analogous. The period eye can become a machine for normalising every difficulty.
So it needs hard limits.
- A documented possibility is not a frequency estimate.
- A frequency estimate is not an identification.
- A visual parallel is not automatically a functional parallel.
- A functional parallel is not a provenance link.
- A practice found in one region is not necessarily local to that region.
- A practice found near 1400 does not necessarily date an undated feature precisely.
- A later manuscript can demonstrate continuity of a practice without being a period-exact control.
- A prestigious survivor should not stand in for all contemporary books.
There is also a sampling problem. Famous, beautiful and well-digitised manuscripts are easier to retrieve. Their visibility can distort our sense of what was typical. A serious claim about prevalence needs a reference collection with a denominator, not a gallery of memorable examples.
The observer-reset article made this point from the other direction: the archive can become a mirror of the query. If we search only for “medieval zodiac medical manuscript,” we will certainly build a world in which zodiac medicine appears everywhere we look.
The corrective is not to stop searching. It is to search adversarially. What would the nearest alternative look like? What objects should lack the proposed feature? How often do controls display it? Which part of the claimed similarity disappears when the comparison is coded before the identities are revealed?
The period eye is useful only when it can tell us that a favourite historical analogy is weak.
16. The Small-Clue Rule
Once the period becomes richer, broad resemblance becomes less valuable. Many places can support medicine. Many manuscripts can contain circles. Many traditions can use zodiac imagery. Many books can mix practical and learned material.
The investigation therefore has to narrow.
A useful clue should answer a question on which the nearest candidate explanations disagree. Not “does this look medieval?” but “does this particular construction occur in this family more often than its nearest controls?” Not “does this figure wear period clothing?” but “is this diagnostic feature recoverable at the image resolution, and how widely did it circulate?”
The same logic applies to page structure. A circular diagram is broad. The relation between labels and radial sectors may be narrower. A foldout is broad. The sequence of reveal and the placement of text across fold boundaries may be narrower. A vessel-like shape is broad. The recurrence of a particular attachment relation across independent pages may be narrower.
This is where the “period eye” becomes more than atmosphere. It generates a candidate set. Then the candidate set must be discriminated.
The clue is valuable when it reduces the field without importing more certainty than the observation can carry.
17. Reset Test: Would We Still Call This Strange?
The period-eye exercise can now be written as a simple repeated test.
- State the modern reaction. What exactly feels unusual?
- Rewrite it as an observable feature. Remove the interpretive noun where possible.
- Name the claim scale. Is the question about layout, function, genre, date, place, language or provenance?
- Build a dated comparison set. Include both attractive parallels and near-confusions.
- Ask whether the feature was historically possible. If yes, remove “impossible” from the argument.
- Ask whether the feature was historically common enough to be weak evidence. Do not infer prevalence from one example.
- Find the discriminator. Which observation separates the surviving candidate explanations?
- Return to Voynich. Test the discriminator on the relevant manuscript layer.
- Stop at the evidence ceiling. Do not convert possibility into identity.
This is a method proposal. The present article has not performed a codex-wide implementation of the nine-step test, and it claims no accuracy improvement. Its job is to make the next comparison more disciplined.
18. Four Constructed Voynich Questions After the Period Reset
The examples in this section are constructed research questions, not newly reported measurements.
Question A — Is the circle strange?
No useful answer yet. Circular organisation is too broad and is historically unsurprising across calendrical, astronomical, cosmological and other diagram families. The discriminator has to move into structure: number and organisation of sectors, relation of text to geometry, recurrence, reading order and operational correspondences.
Question B — Is the body-plus-zodiac combination strange?
Not as a broad historical combination. Zodiac Man controls weaken that argument. The next useful test would ask whether the Voynich arrangement exhibits relationships comparable to the documented medical-astrological operation, rather than merely sharing bodies and celestial motifs.
Question C — Is the mixture of subjects strange?
Not enough to establish incoherence. Harley MS 2332 shows an early-fifteenth-century almanac mixing categories that modern shelving separates. The Voynich question becomes whether its own populations exhibit an organising relation, production history or retrieval logic that explains the combination.
Question D — Are the foldouts strange?
Large or folding information surfaces are not historically impossible. But the particular Voynich foldouts still require their own codicological and interface analysis. The useful comparison concerns what folding lets a reader do, not the generic fact that both objects fold.
The repeated pattern is deliberate. The period eye often does not solve a question. It removes the weakest version of the question and returns a narrower one.
19. Why This Makes the Voynich Harder—and Better
At first this approach can feel disappointing. The more early-fifteenth-century manuscripts we inspect, the fewer spectacular clues remain spectacular.
Zodiacs travel. Medical knowledge mixes with astronomy. Calendars become visual systems. Books accumulate. Languages mix. Diagrams sacrifice physical geometry for other relationships. Technical objects can be beautiful. A manuscript can be portable, foldable and interactive.
Each of these controls removes an easy mystery.
That is good.
A mystery that survives only because its historical neighbours have been forgotten is not a strong mystery. The goal is not to keep Voynich strange. The goal is to identify the strangeness that remains after ordinary historical possibilities have been admitted.
The manuscript may then become harder to sensationalise but easier to study. We can ask which combinations are genuinely rare, which structural constraints remain unusual, which text behaviours resist known models, which physical features still require object-level evidence, and which historical coordinates remain unsupported after controls.
This is the difference between mystery accumulation and constraint accumulation.
Mystery accumulation says: another strange thing.
Constraint accumulation says: that apparently strange thing is ordinary under these conditions, so it no longer carries much discriminating weight. What remains?
20. World Return: The Right Century Can Remove the Wrong Mystery
We began with a simple discomfort.
The Voynich Manuscript looks strange.
But “strange” is a relation between an object and an observer. Change the observer’s expectations and some of the strangeness moves.
Early-fifteenth-century controls show us serious books that cross modern subject boundaries, combine body and cosmos, integrate pictures with calculation, unfold physically, grow through later additions, mix languages, use symbolic interfaces, and combine elaborate decoration with practical information.
They also show a visual culture in which selective naturalism and decorative or spatial stylisation can coexist.
None of that identifies Voynich.
It does something more disciplined.
It takes several reactions that might otherwise become evidence—too mixed, too visual, too astrological, too diagrammatic, too spatially odd, too interactive—and asks whether those reactions survive historical comparison.
Where they do not survive, we let them go.
Where they do survive, the question becomes sharper because it is no longer competing with an anomaly we accidentally created ourselves.
The period eye is not a way to make Voynich normal. It is a way to make sure that whatever remains abnormal is abnormal for the right reasons.
