Good language users do not wait passively for every word to arrive.

They predict.

Before a sentence ends, the brain is already narrowing possibilities from syntax, meaning, topic, collocation and world knowledge. When someone says, “She spread the toast with…”, a small set of likely continuations becomes more available than thousands of unrelated words. When a science paragraph begins describing evaporation, the reader starts anticipating vocabulary connected to heat, water, vapour and change of state.

This anticipatory process is lexical prediction.
