Transition words do not make an essay coherent by themselves. They make the relationship between ideas visible.
A student can memorise furthermore, however, therefore and in conclusion and still produce writing that feels mechanical. The problem is not usually the size of the transition-word bank. The problem is that the student has not identified the logical job each connector performs.
This Top 100 Secondary 4 Vocabulary List is therefore not a decorative list of linking words. It is a writing-control system for Secondary 4 / Grade 10-stage students. The article groups transition words and phrases according to the relationship they signal: addition, comparison, contrast, concession, cause, consequence, example, clarification, emphasis, sequence, condition and conclusion.
Different school systems use different labels, and Grade 10 is not identical to Secondary 4 everywhere. The common learning problem is nevertheless recognisable: students at this stage are increasingly expected to write sustained explanations, argumentative essays, discursive responses, reports and evidence-based answers. Their ideas must not merely be correct. The reader must be able to see how one idea leads to the next.

A transition is not a decoration between sentences. It is a claim about the relationship between them.
The 50-second answer
- Choose the relationship before the connector. Ask whether the next idea adds, contrasts, concedes, causes, results, illustrates, clarifies, sequences, conditions or concludes.
- Do not use “however” as a generic academic word. It specifically signals contrast or qualification.
- Do not use “therefore” unless the next idea actually follows from the previous one.
- Do not force a transition into every sentence. Coherence also comes from topic continuity, reference chains, repeated key concepts and logical sentence order.
- Use punctuation correctly. Many transitions such as however, therefore and moreover are conjunctive adverbs, not coordinating conjunctions.
- Paragraph transitions are larger than sentence transitions. A paragraph may need a bridge sentence, not a single word.
- Simple connectors are often excellent. But, because, so and yet can be precise and formal enough in many contexts.
- Transition variety should come from varied reasoning, not synonym rotation. If every paragraph needs however, the structure may be over-dependent on contrast.
Why transition words matter at Secondary 4
At lower levels, a student can sometimes produce acceptable writing by placing correct sentences one after another. At Secondary 4, the reader expects a larger structure. An essay paragraph may have to perform several moves:
- state a claim;
- add a reason;
- introduce evidence;
- explain what the evidence means;
- acknowledge a limitation;
- answer a counterargument;
- show a consequence;
- return to the controlling point.
The reader needs signals. But a signal is useful only if it corresponds to the actual relationship.
Compare these two sentences:
Public transport reduces the need for private cars. Furthermore, reliable services can improve access to employment for people who do not drive.
Furthermore works because the second sentence adds another supporting point.
Public transport reduces the need for private cars. However, reliable services can improve access to employment for people who do not drive.
The second version sounds academic but is logically wrong. There is no meaningful contrast. The connector damages the reasoning because it tells the reader to expect opposition where none exists.
Transition vocabulary is therefore reasoning vocabulary.
How Maren, Iona and Leonie use transitions differently
Maren is writing. Her problem is structure. She often knows her points but places them in an order that forces the reader to reconstruct the logic. She learns to label each move before choosing a transition: addition, contrast, concession, result, example or conclusion.
Iona is reading. Her job is to interpret transitions as instructions from the writer. When she sees nevertheless, she expects the writer to accept a previous difficulty but continue with a claim. When she sees consequently, she expects a result. When she sees specifically, she expects narrowing or detail.
Leonie is working under time pressure. She knows many connectors, but she needs rapid access to the right relationship. Instead of memorising an alphabetical list, she practises function retrieval: “opposite direction → conversely”, “despite that point → nevertheless”, “logical result → therefore”, “more exact detail → specifically”.

Cluster 1 — Addition and reinforcement
Addition transitions signal that the writer is continuing in the same general direction. The new point may add evidence, extend the claim, provide another reason or strengthen what has already been established.
1. Additionally
Function: adds another relevant point. Typical position: beginning of a sentence or clause. Example: The programme reduced waiting time. Additionally, it improved the accuracy of appointment records. Use when: the second point genuinely adds new information. Avoid when: the second sentence simply repeats the first in different words. Retrieval cue: “I have another supporting point of the same general direction.”
2. Furthermore
Function: adds a further point, often with a sense of strengthening the argument. Example: The rule is difficult to enforce consistently. Furthermore, enforcement requires staff time that could be used elsewhere. Precision: slightly more formal than also. Misuse: do not use it merely because a new sentence begins. Retrieval cue: “Here is another reason that builds the case.”
3. Moreover
Function: introduces an additional point that reinforces the argument. Example: The revised route is faster. Moreover, it serves two neighbourhoods that previously lacked direct access. Precision: formal and useful, but often overused by students seeking variety. Tip: if moreover, furthermore and additionally could all work, choose one based on rhythm rather than imagined prestige.
4. In addition
Function: adds another point or consideration. Example: The device must be affordable. In addition, it must operate reliably in high humidity. Precision: clear and versatile. Grammar: when used at the start of a sentence, it is usually followed by a comma. Retrieval cue: “There is another relevant consideration.”
5. Also
Function: adds information. Example: The new system reduced paperwork and also made records easier to search. Precision: simple, standard and often better than forcing a more formal connector. Placement: often appears inside a sentence rather than at the beginning. Lesson: formal writing does not require replacing every ordinary connector.
6. Likewise
Function: adds a point that follows a similar pattern. Example: Retrieval strengthens access to vocabulary. Likewise, repeated recall can strengthen access to factual knowledge. Precision: addition plus similarity. Do not use: if the second point is simply another unrelated benefit. Retrieval cue: “The next case behaves similarly.”
7. Equally important
Function: adds a point while explicitly assigning comparable importance. Example: Cost matters when evaluating the proposal. Equally important, the policy must remain accessible to the people it is intended to serve. Precision: this phrase makes an evaluative claim about importance. Use it only if you are prepared to defend that equality of importance.
8. Alongside this
Function: adds a parallel consideration, process or development. Example: The school increased device access. Alongside this, teachers received training in digital lesson design. Precision: useful when two developments occur together rather than one being merely another abstract reason. Retrieval cue: “A parallel development happened beside the first.”
9. Not only … but also
Function: pairs two related points and often emphasises the second. Example: The change not only reduced delays but also improved communication between teams. Grammar: keep the structures parallel: “not only reduced … but also improved”, not “not only reduced … but also an improvement”. Use sparingly: useful for balanced emphasis, but repetitive use sounds formulaic.
10. Besides
Function: adds another reason or consideration. Example: The proposal would be expensive. Besides, the existing system has not yet been fully evaluated. Register: acceptable in many essays but slightly less formal than furthermore or in addition. Lesson: choose register to fit the task rather than assuming the most formal connector is always best.
Cluster 2 — Similarity and comparison
Similarity transitions tell the reader that the next example, finding or argument follows a comparable pattern. They should not be used simply to avoid repeating addition connectors.
11. Similarly
Function: introduces a comparable case or relationship. Example: Students retrieve vocabulary more quickly after repeated recall. Similarly, repeated recall can make mathematical procedures more accessible. Precision: state or imply what the similarity actually is. Retrieval cue: “The next case works in a comparable way.”
12. Likewise
Function: signals that the same reasoning or pattern applies to another case. Example: Clear definitions improve scientific discussion. Likewise, they improve argumentative writing by reducing ambiguity. Precision: overlaps with similarly, often with a slightly more compact rhetorical feel. Tip: use one, not both together.
13. In the same way
Function: explicitly marks a parallel mechanism or process. Example: A map helps travellers by making routes visible. In the same way, transitions help readers by making logical routes visible. Precision: especially useful for analogical explanation. Retrieval cue: “The same mechanism can be seen in the next case.”
14. Correspondingly
Function: indicates a matching or related change. Example: As practice became more demanding, feedback became more specific; correspondingly, student revisions became more targeted. Precision: formal and useful when two changes align. Do not use: when there is no genuine correspondence.
15. Comparably
Function: indicates a similar degree or pattern. Example: The first method reduced errors by 12 per cent; the second performed comparably under the same conditions. Precision: useful when judging relative performance. Register: formal but less common than similarly. Use it when the comparison itself matters.
16. By the same token
Function: applies the same reasoning principle to another case. Example: Students should not accept a claim merely because it appears in a polished article. By the same token, they should not reject a claim merely because it appears in an informal source. Precision: slightly rhetorical; best used where the same rule genuinely applies.
17. In parallel
Function: marks simultaneous or structurally similar developments. Example: The curriculum increased conceptual difficulty. In parallel, assessment questions demanded more independent explanation. Precision: good for paired developments rather than simple similarity of opinion.
18. Analogously
Function: signals reasoning by analogy. Example: A transport network becomes more resilient when several routes reach the same destination. Analogously, memory becomes more accessible when a concept has several retrieval routes. Precision: the analogy must be limited to relevant structural similarities. Warning: analogy illustrates; it does not prove equivalence.
19. Just as … so
Function: creates a structured analogy between two propositions. Example: Just as a clear map reduces navigational uncertainty, so a clear paragraph structure reduces interpretive uncertainty. Grammar: maintain parallel structure. Use: effective for explanatory comparisons but can sound rhetorical if overused.
20. Equally
Function: marks a comparable degree, relevance or importance. Example: Accuracy matters in evidence selection. Equally, relevance determines whether that accurate information actually supports the claim. Precision: like equally important, this connector makes a judgement of comparable weight. Use deliberately.
Cluster 3 — Contrast and difference
Contrast transitions signal that the next idea differs from, opposes or complicates the previous one. This is one of the most overused categories because students often insert however whenever they want a sentence to sound academic.
21. However
Function: introduces contrast or qualification. Example: The programme increased participation. However, the improvement was concentrated in students who already attended regularly. Grammar: at the start of a sentence, follow with a comma. Between independent clauses, use a semicolon before it or start a new sentence: “The programme increased participation; however, the effect was uneven.” Do not write: “The programme increased participation, however the effect was uneven.”
22. In contrast
Function: explicitly highlights a difference between two cases. Example: The first group improved steadily. In contrast, the second group showed large fluctuations. Precision: useful when the contrast itself is the analytical point. Retrieval cue: “Now compare the previous pattern with a different one.”
23. Conversely
Function: signals a reversed relationship. Example: Strong prior knowledge can reduce the load of interpreting a new text. Conversely, weak background knowledge can make the same passage substantially harder. Precision: stronger and more specific than however. Use only where the relationship genuinely reverses.
24. On the other hand
Function: introduces another side, perspective or contrasting consideration. Example: Remote learning can improve flexibility. On the other hand, students with limited devices may face greater access barriers. Precision: good for balanced discussion. Note: “On the one hand” is optional if the structure is already clear, but paired use can help symmetrical arguments.
25. Whereas
Function: contrasts two parallel clauses. Example: Recognition supplies the answer, whereas retrieval requires the learner to generate it. Grammar: usually joins clauses within a sentence. Precision: excellent when comparing two concepts side by side. Retrieval cue: “X does this, whereas Y does that.”
26. While
Function: can mark contrast as well as time. Example: While the new system is faster, it requires more careful verification. Precision: because while has several meanings, use sentence context to prevent ambiguity. Tip: in formal analytical writing, whereas may be clearer when pure contrast is intended.
27. By contrast
Function: foregrounds a sharp comparison with what preceded. Example: Memorisation produced strong immediate recall. By contrast, retrieval practice produced stronger delayed performance. Precision: useful where the two patterns form a meaningful pair. Register: formal and concise.
28. Instead
Function: replaces one possibility with another. Example: The programme did not increase the number of lessons. Instead, it reorganised practice so feedback arrived earlier. Precision: signals substitution, not generic contrast. Retrieval cue: “Not X; the actual alternative is Y.”
29. Rather
Function: corrects, refines or substitutes a more accurate statement. Example: The problem is not a lack of vocabulary; rather, it is a failure to retrieve vocabulary under load. Precision: especially useful for “not X but Y” correction structures. Grammar: punctuation depends on sentence structure.
30. Unlike
Function: introduces a direct difference between nouns or noun phrases. Example: Unlike recognition tasks, free-recall tasks do not provide the target word. Precision: compact and useful for topic-sentence comparisons. Grammar: make sure the things being compared are parallel; avoid dangling comparison structures.
Cluster 4 — Concession and qualification
Concession transitions are more sophisticated than simple contrast because the writer accepts a point, limitation or difficulty and then shows why the main argument still survives.
31. Nevertheless
Function: accepts the previous difficulty but continues with a claim that still holds. Example: The study involved only one school. Nevertheless, the pattern was consistent enough to justify a larger investigation. Precision: stronger than simple contrast because the writer treats the earlier point as real but not decisive. Retrieval cue: “That problem matters; even so, this still follows.”
32. Nonetheless
Function: similar to nevertheless. Example: The evidence is preliminary. Nonetheless, it identifies a plausible mechanism worth testing. Precision: often interchangeable with nevertheless; do not treat them as different intellectual moves unless context gives them a different rhetorical rhythm.
33. Even so
Function: acknowledges the previous point but maintains a contrasting conclusion. Example: The technology remains expensive. Even so, its cost has fallen enough to make small-scale trials feasible. Register: less formal than nevertheless, but clear and perfectly acceptable in many essays.
34. Although
Function: introduces a subordinate concession. Example: Although the sample is small, the findings are consistent with earlier research. Grammar: although introduces a dependent clause; do not write “Although the sample is small. The findings…” unless deliberately using a fragment, which formal essays usually should avoid. Retrieval cue: “This limitation is true, but the main clause still stands.”
35. Though
Function: introduces concession similarly to although. Example: Though the result was modest, it appeared across all three groups. Register: slightly more flexible and conversational; can also appear at the end: “The result was modest, though.” Tip: for formal essays, choose position deliberately.
36. Despite
Function: introduces a concession before a noun phrase or -ing form. Example: Despite the higher cost, the system remained financially sustainable. Grammar: do not write “despite the system was expensive”. Use “despite the expense” or “although the system was expensive”. Retrieval cue: “This obstacle exists, but it does not prevent the main result.”
37. In spite of
Function: concession equivalent in grammar to despite. Example: In spite of limited funding, the project met its primary objectives. Precision: slightly longer but sometimes more natural in ordinary prose. Grammar: followed by noun phrase or -ing form, not a full finite clause unless “the fact that” is added.
38. Admittedly
Function: explicitly concedes that a point is true or reasonable. Example: Admittedly, the revised schedule creates inconvenience for some families. However, the effect can be reduced through staggered transport arrangements. Precision: useful when the writer wants to display fairness before responding. Warning: do not concede a point you do not actually explain.
39. Granted
Function: concedes a point before qualification. Example: Granted, online assessments can reduce printing and marking delays. They can also create access and security problems that require separate evaluation. Register: rhetorical but common in argumentative writing. Retrieval cue: “I accept this point for the sake of argument; now consider what follows.”
40. Notwithstanding
Function: despite; in spite of. Example: Notwithstanding these limitations, the findings provide a useful basis for further study. Register: formal and compact. Warning: do not use it merely to sound sophisticated. If despite is clearer, use despite. Retrieval cue: “Despite this recognised limitation…”
Cluster 5 — Cause and reason
Cause transitions explain why something happens. They should be used carefully because causal language can overstate what the evidence supports.
41. Because
Function: gives a cause or reason. Example: The answer became more precise because the student distinguished the criterion before evaluating the evidence. Precision: simple and powerful. Academic writing does not improve when because is automatically replaced by longer phrases. Grammar: introduces a dependent clause.
42. Since
Function: can give a reason or indicate time. Example: Since the sample excluded part-time workers, the findings should not be generalised to the entire workforce. Precision: if temporal meaning could be confused with causal meaning, use because instead. Retrieval cue: “Given that this condition is true…”
43. As
Function: can express reason, time or manner. Example: As the evidence remains limited, the conclusion should be tentative. Precision: flexible but potentially ambiguous. In technical writing, choose because when clarity matters more than stylistic variation.
44. Due to
Function: introduces a cause, typically before a noun phrase. Example: The event was postponed due to severe weather. Grammar: modern usage often treats due to broadly like because of, but students should keep the structure concise. Warning: do not pile several vague “due to” clauses into one sentence.
45. Because of
Function: gives a reason before a noun phrase. Example: Attendance fell because of transport disruption. Precision: direct and clear. Contrast: “because the buses were disrupted” uses a clause; “because of bus disruption” uses a noun phrase.
46. Owing to
Function: expresses cause. Example: The trial ended early owing to equipment failure. Register: formal and concise. Warning: do not use it solely as a prestige substitute for because of. Choose it when it fits the sentence naturally.
47. Given that
Function: treats a condition or fact as a reason for what follows. Example: Given that the two groups began at different achievement levels, final scores alone cannot establish which method was more effective. Precision: particularly useful in analytical reasoning where a known fact constrains interpretation.
48. In view of
Function: introduces a reason based on circumstances or evidence. Example: In view of the repeated safety failures, further testing is warranted. Precision: formal and evaluative; implies that the following decision is made in response to the stated information.
49. On account of
Function: because of. Example: Several sessions were cancelled on account of extreme weather. Register: formal but less common in contemporary academic prose. Lesson: knowing a connector does not mean you must use it. Prefer the most natural option for the context.
50. Insofar as
Function: indicates that a statement is true to the extent that a condition holds. Example: The policy is effective insofar as it improves access without creating new barriers. Precision: combines condition and limitation; advanced but genuinely useful for qualified reasoning. Warning: use only when you understand the “to the extent that” meaning.
Cluster 6 — Result and consequence
Result transitions signal that the next idea follows from what came before. They are dangerous when the connection is merely chronological or correlational rather than causal or logical.
51. Therefore
Function: introduces a conclusion or result that follows from prior reasoning. Example: The sample excludes rural households. Therefore, the findings cannot be assumed to represent the national population. Grammar: conjunctive adverb; use a new sentence or semicolon between independent clauses. Retrieval cue: “Given the previous point, this conclusion follows.”
52. Thus
Function: signals a logical result or conclusion. Example: The two measures assess different constructs; thus, direct comparison would be misleading. Precision: concise and formal. Warning: do not use thus to hide a missing reasoning step. The conclusion still needs to follow.
53. Consequently
Function: introduces a consequence of what preceded. Example: The instructions did not define the scoring criterion. Consequently, different markers applied different standards. Precision: stronger causal/result signal than simple sequence. Retrieval cue: “This happened as a consequence of the previous condition.”
54. Accordingly
Function: introduces an action or conclusion appropriate to what has been established. Example: The evidence remains incomplete. Accordingly, the recommendation should be limited to a pilot rather than full implementation. Precision: often implies rational response, not merely mechanical consequence.
55. As a result
Function: introduces a consequence. Example: The new route reduced transfer time. As a result, average journey duration fell. Precision: clear and accessible. Warning: causal claim remains your responsibility; the phrase does not create causation by itself.
56. Hence
Function: therefore; for this reason. Example: The evidence cannot distinguish between the two explanations; hence, the conclusion should remain tentative. Register: formal and compact. Tip: use when the inferential link is clear; avoid stacking with therefore or thus.
57. For this reason
Function: explicitly links a reason to a conclusion or action. Example: The measurement changed halfway through the study. For this reason, the early and late results should not be compared directly. Precision: less compressed than thus, often useful when clarity is more important than formality.
58. Thereby
Function: indicates that an action produces a result through the stated means. Example: The system flags repeated errors immediately, thereby allowing teachers to intervene before the pattern becomes established. Precision: usually links result to mechanism within one sentence. Grammar: often followed by an -ing phrase.
59. This leads to
Function: marks a causal or process consequence. Example: Repeated interruptions require students to reconstruct the task state. This leads to slower completion and more opportunities for error. Precision: useful for mechanism chains, but still a causal claim. Support it appropriately.
60. It follows that
Function: signals a logical inference. Example: If the two tests measure different abilities, it follows that a higher score on one cannot automatically be treated as superior performance overall. Precision: strong logical language. Use only if the conclusion genuinely follows from the premises.
Cluster 7 — Examples and evidence
Example transitions tell the reader that the next material illustrates, specifies or provides evidence for the preceding point. An example can clarify without proving a general claim.
61. For example
Function: introduces an illustrative case. Example: Some academic words change claim strength. For example, suggest is more cautious than establish. Precision: a versatile standard connector. Lesson: an example illustrates; it does not automatically establish prevalence or causation.
62. For instance
Function: introduces a particular example. Example: Several factors can make a source less representative. For instance, voluntary surveys may over-represent people with strong opinions. Precision: close to for example; choose for rhythm, not imagined hierarchy.
63. Specifically
Function: narrows a broad statement into a precise detail. Example: The programme improved access. Specifically, evening opening hours allowed working adults to attend. Precision: not merely another example marker; it promises increased specificity.
64. In particular
Function: selects one item or aspect for special attention. Example: Several design features affected usability. In particular, the small text size created problems for older users. Precision: foregrounds one example as especially relevant.
65. To illustrate
Function: signals that the next material will make an abstract point concrete. Example: To illustrate, consider a student who recognises mitigate in a passage but cannot retrieve it during writing. Precision: useful when the example is explanatory rather than evidential.
66. Namely
Function: identifies exactly what a previous general phrase refers to. Example: The study examined one outcome, namely, delayed vocabulary retrieval. Precision: not a generic example word. It specifies the exact referent. Grammar: often set off by commas.
67. Such as
Function: introduces examples within a larger category. Example: Academic writing relies on relationship words such as however, therefore and specifically. Precision: examples are not necessarily exhaustive. Grammar: typically used within a sentence, not as a sentence-opening conjunctive adverb.
68. Including
Function: identifies members of a broader set. Example: Several factors affected completion, including device access, transport time and prior experience. Precision: signals that the list may not be complete unless context says otherwise.
69. As evidence
Function: explicitly introduces material used to support a claim. Example: As evidence of improved access, the report cites a 24 per cent increase in evening attendance. Precision: stronger than for example because it assigns an evidential role. The evidence must actually bear on the claim.
70. Consider
Function: invites the reader to examine a case. Example: Consider a learner who scores well on multiple-choice vocabulary tests but struggles to write independently. Precision: useful in explanatory and analytical prose for thought experiments or cases. Register: direct but fully compatible with formal writing.
Cluster 8 — Clarification and restatement
Clarification transitions tell the reader that the next sentence will restate, narrow, define or make the previous idea more explicit. They are especially useful when abstract language risks ambiguity.
71. In other words
Function: restates an idea in a different way. Example: Recognition supplies the target word to the learner. In other words, the learner does not have to generate the form independently. Precision: the restatement should clarify, not merely repeat. Retrieval cue: “Let me say the same core idea more clearly.”
72. That is
Function: clarifies or specifies a preceding statement. Example: The study focused on productive vocabulary; that is, words students could retrieve and use independently. Precision: more compact than in other words. Grammar: often appears between commas or after a semicolon.
73. More precisely
Function: corrects or narrows a broad statement. Example: The intervention improved memory. More precisely, it improved delayed retrieval of the practised items. Precision: powerful academic move because it signals self-correction toward tighter scope.
74. More specifically
Function: moves from general to narrower detail. Example: Several language skills improved. More specifically, students became better at distinguishing near-synonyms. Precision: close to specifically, but explicitly frames the second sentence as a narrowing of the first.
75. Put differently
Function: reformulates an idea from another angle. Example: A transition does not repair broken logic. Put differently, a connector can signal a relationship only if the relationship already exists. Register: formal enough for many essays and useful when the reformulation adds conceptual access.
76. To clarify
Function: announces an explicit clarification. Example: To clarify, the argument is not that examinations are unnecessary; it is that assessment information is most useful when it can still change learning. Precision: good for preventing a predictable misunderstanding.
77. In this sense
Function: limits a word or concept to the particular meaning just developed. Example: Vocabulary functions as infrastructure. In this sense, words provide access routes to concepts rather than merely decorating language. Precision: useful when a term has several possible meanings.
78. In practical terms

“Firstly, secondly, thirdly” is not wrong, but strong essays often use conceptual transitions instead: “A first criterion is effectiveness. A second is feasibility. The final concern is equity.” Conceptual labels tell the reader more than numerical order alone.
