A classroom can look calm until one predictable moment arrives. The class moves from the carpet to tables. Equipment comes out. A group starts a practical task. Students line up. One child has to wait. Another has to stop using a device and begin written work. A teacher who knows the class can often predict exactly where behaviour will wobble.
The usual response happens after the wobble: correction, reminder, warning, consequence, repair. Precorrection changes the timing. Instead of waiting for the known problem, the teacher briefly reminds students of an already taught expectation immediately before the risky moment. The intervention is small because the teaching has already happened. It is not a new lecture. It is a timely cue that helps a student retrieve the right behaviour before the old pattern takes over.
The What Works Clearinghouse’s 2024 practice guide on teacher-delivered behavioural interventions in Grades K–5 gives strong evidence to the recommendation that teachers remind students to engage in expected behaviours. The guide describes precorrections as brief prompts or reminders delivered before situations in which students may need help to be successful. This page owns one narrow mechanism: precorrection as an antecedent support for behaviour that has already been taught. It does not own classroom routines, instructional directions, positive reinforcement, sanctions, or broad classroom management. Those neighbouring mechanisms matter, but precorrection has its own job: put the expected behaviour back into working memory at the moment it is most likely to be needed.
The 50-second answer
Precorrection works by changing the timing of teacher support. The teacher identifies a context in which a student or class predictably struggles, chooses one observable behaviour that would make the moment go better, and gives a brief cue just before the situation begins.
A good precorrection usually has five parts:
- The expectation is already known. The teacher is reminding, not introducing.
- The cue comes before the risky moment. Timing is the mechanism.
- The language is specific. “When the tablets close, put both hands on the desk and face the board” is more usable than “Be good.”
- The support is as light as possible. A gesture may be enough; modelling is used only when lighter prompts are not sufficient.
- The teacher watches what happens next. If the student follows the expectation, the teacher acknowledges the successful behaviour and gradually fades the reminder.
Precorrection is not a threat disguised as a reminder. “Remember what happened last time” points backward to punishment. “When we move to groups, carry the tray with two hands and walk” points forward to a successful action.
The central principle is simple: retrieve the right behaviour before the context retrieves the wrong one.
1. Precorrection is about timing, not volume
Teachers often respond to repeated difficulty by making the reminder longer. More words feel like more support. In practice, timing can matter more than length. A two-sentence explanation delivered five minutes after the transition has already gone wrong cannot perform the same function as a five-second cue delivered at the door.
Imagine a student who regularly calls out during whole-class questioning. A teacher might stop the lesson three times to say, “Please remember not to call out.” A precorrection is different: before questioning begins, the teacher quietly says, “I’m going to ask three questions. Show me you have an answer with your hand on your notebook, and I’ll come to you.”
The cue arrives before the familiar trigger. It makes the alternative behaviour more available at the right moment.
Caveat: timing alone cannot repair an expectation that has never been taught. If the student does not know what “participate appropriately” looks like, a reminder has nothing stable to retrieve.
2. The expectation must exist before it can be retrieved
Precorrection is sometimes used as a shortcut for teaching. A teacher says “Remember the expectations” when the class has never been shown what those expectations mean in that context. The phrase sounds efficient but asks students to retrieve a blank file.
Before precorrection can work, the teacher should be able to answer: What exactly has been taught? What would I see if the student did it successfully? Could the student demonstrate it now?
For group discussion, the expectation might be: one person speaks at a time, disagree with the idea rather than the person, and the recorder writes the group’s final decision. For independent work, it might be: open the required page, begin the first item within one minute, use the help card before leaving the seat.
Concrete example: during the first week, the teacher models how to enter a lab station. In later weeks, the precorrection can shrink to, “Lab entry: goggles, bags under benches, hands off equipment until the signal.”
Boundary: a reminder should not be used to hide poor task design. If twelve students are idle because there is one set of equipment, behaviour may be a scheduling problem rather than an expectation problem.
3. Choose one behaviour, not an entire personality
Weak reminders often target character: “Be sensible,” “Be respectful,” “Act your age.” These phrases are broad and easy to interpret differently.
A stronger precorrection targets one observable action. Instead of “Be respectful in the corridor,” say, “Walk on the left and keep voices at conversation level until we reach the library.” Instead of “Focus,” say, “When the timer starts, eyes on your own paper and pencil moving for the first two minutes.”
Specificity matters because a student under load has less capacity to translate a value word into an action plan.
This does not mean values are unimportant. Respect, responsibility and care can anchor school culture. But a precorrection should bridge the value to behaviour.
Caveat: do not reduce complex social situations to robotic compliance. Some contexts require judgement. The teacher can teach a principle and then precorrect the highest-risk action without pretending every situation has one scripted response.
4. Precorrection works best at predictable risk points
The most efficient targets are moments that repeatedly generate the same difficulty. Transitions are obvious examples, but risk points can also occur inside academic work.
Common risk points include:
- moving from teacher explanation to independent work;
- receiving equipment or devices;
- waiting for a turn;
- partner selection;
- lining up;
- returning from recess;
- moving into an unfamiliar room;
- beginning a difficult question type;
- switching from a preferred to a less preferred task;
- receiving corrected work;
- packing up when some students finish earlier than others.
A teacher can identify these moments by looking for recurrence. If behaviour repeatedly breaks in the same context, the context is providing information.
Concrete example: a class manages ordinary lessons well but becomes noisy whenever mini-whiteboards are distributed. Instead of correcting noise every time, the teacher precorrects before distribution: “Boards stay flat. Pens capped until everyone has one. First response is silent.”
Boundary: not every misbehaviour is predictable. Precorrection is strongest where there is a stable cue–response pattern to interrupt.
5. Use the least intensive cue that works
The WWC guide describes precorrections that vary in intensity. A useful implementation principle is to begin with the smallest effective support.
Possible cues include:
- a visual symbol;
- a hand gesture;
- a brief whole-class reminder;
- a quiet individual statement;
- a short rehearsal;
- a model of the expected behaviour.
If a student already knows the expectation and usually responds to a gesture, a full verbal explanation may be unnecessary and embarrassing. If a new context has caused repeated confusion, a model may be appropriate.
Concrete example: before silent reading, a teacher taps the “book open, voice off” icon on a student’s desk. The cue is enough. The teacher does not stop the class to deliver a public reminder.
Caveat: the least intensive cue is not always the least visible cue. A visual card that everyone can see may feel less intrusive than a whispered individual correction if it is part of a normal class system.
6. Group precorrections can prevent unnecessary individual targeting
When many students face the same risk point, a group reminder is usually more efficient and less stigmatising than a series of private warnings.
Before a transition, the teacher might say, “When I say move: chairs in, folders carried closed, go directly to your group.” This is a class-level precorrection. Students who need more support can then receive a quieter individual cue.
This two-step approach preserves dignity. It also reduces the chance that one student becomes publicly associated with every classroom reminder.
Concrete example: before a practical Science task, the teacher reminds the whole class of three safety behaviours. One student who has struggled with impulse control receives a second, private gesture pointing to the equipment boundary line.
Boundary: group reminders should not become constant narration of obvious behaviour. If the class no longer needs the cue, continuing it can create dependence and irritate students who are already independent.
7. Individual precorrection should be private when possible
A reminder delivered publicly can become social theatre. The class hears that one student is expected to fail, and the student may feel compelled to defend status.
Private precorrection reduces that risk. The teacher can approach before the transition and say quietly, “When the group starts, keep the materials in the centre until everyone has a role. I’ll check back after the first minute.”
The tone should assume success rather than predict failure.
Compare:
- “Don’t mess around with the equipment again.”
- “First minute: choose roles, then one person collects equipment.”
The first sentence rehearses the previous error. The second rehearses the desired next action.
Caveat: privacy does not mean secrecy. Some students benefit from a visible, agreed support plan. The key is that the cue is respectful and not used to mark the student out for ridicule.
8. Visual precorrections reduce language load
A visual reminder can be useful when verbal instructions are easily lost, when the environment is noisy, or when the teacher wants to prompt without interrupting instruction.
Examples include:
- a small icon showing “hand up”;
- a checklist for lab setup;
- a colour-coded transition card;
- a desk strip with three steps;
- a picture cue near a materials station.
Visuals are especially helpful when the expected action has a stable sequence.
Concrete example: a student who repeatedly leaves tasks without packing equipment uses a three-icon card: close lid, return item, tick table. The teacher points to the card before cleanup begins.
Boundary: a visual that contains ten steps is no longer a light precorrection. It has become a procedure sheet. That may be useful, but it is a different level of support.
9. Gestural precorrections can preserve lesson flow
Once a cue is taught, a gesture can reactivate it quickly. A teacher may point to the floor marker before students enter, tap the timer, show two fingers to signal “two voices maximum,” or place a hand near the ear to remind a student to listen.
The gesture works because its meaning is shared in advance. An improvised gesture that the student cannot decode is not a precorrection; it is ambiguity.
Concrete example: before pair discussion, the teacher points to the “A then B” card indicating which partner speaks first. This prevents the same students from dominating every exchange.
Caveat: gestures can carry different social meanings across cultures and communities. Choose signals collaboratively where possible and avoid gestures that may be experienced as mocking, infantilising or threatening.
10. Verbal precorrections should be short enough to remember
A long reminder becomes another instruction to process. The learner must hold the words, extract the important action, and then act while the context is already beginning.
Useful verbal precorrections are short, concrete and forward-facing:
- “Walk, carry, place.”
- “One speaker; everyone else tracks.”
- “When the screen closes, start Question 1.”
- “Ask your partner once before raising your help card.”
Concrete example: before dismissal, “Pack, check the floor, wait behind your chair.”
Boundary: brevity cannot compensate for vagueness. “Remember!” is brief but not informative unless the cue has a clearly shared meaning.
11. Modelling is the high-intensity end of precorrection
Sometimes the student knows the rule verbally but cannot execute it in the context. A quick model can bridge that gap.
Before students move through a crowded equipment area, the teacher demonstrates: “Watch how I pick up the tray, turn, and move around the outside.” Students may rehearse once, then begin.
Modelling is especially valuable when the desired behaviour has a physical or social sequence that is difficult to infer from words alone.
Caveat: if the teacher has to model the same behaviour every day for months, the issue may no longer be reminder strength. The team should ask whether the skill was learned, whether the expectation is realistic, and whether additional support is needed.
12. Precorrection belongs before transitions
Transitions compress many demands: stop one activity, retain instructions, move bodies and materials, navigate peers, and begin a new task. This makes them ideal precorrection targets.
A transition cue should identify the first success condition and any known bottleneck.
Concrete example: “When the bell goes, stay seated. Close laptops first. I’ll dismiss by row.” This prevents a predictable rush caused by ambiguous timing.
For younger students, the sequence may be rehearsed physically. For older students, the cue can be minimal and neutral.
Boundary: transitions also fail when they are unnecessarily long or complex. Simplify the procedure before adding more reminders.
13. Academic difficulty can be a behaviour trigger
Behaviour is not separate from instruction. Students may call out, avoid work, leave seats or distract peers when a task feels impossible.
A precorrection can therefore include an academic coping behaviour: “If you are stuck, underline the part you understand and use the help card before you stop.”
This is important because “stay on task” is not usable when the student lacks a next action.
Concrete example: before a challenging Mathematics set, the teacher reminds one student: “First attempt, then compare with the example, then ask.” The expected behaviour includes a learning strategy.
Boundary: do not use behavioural prompts to keep a student trapped in work that is genuinely inaccessible. The task may need adaptation, teaching or diagnostic repair.
14. A precorrection is an antecedent, not a delayed consequence
The technical distinction is useful. A precorrection occurs before the target situation. A correction, reprimand or consequence occurs after behaviour has happened.
Teachers sometimes call a warning after a disruption a “reminder.” Functionally, it is no longer antecedent support.
Why does this matter? Because prevention and consequence solve different problems. If the teacher wants to test whether a cue prevents errors, the cue has to arrive before the error window.
Concrete example: “Remember to use walking feet” after a child has run across the room is a correction. Saying it before the class leaves the carpet is a precorrection.
Caveat: both can be appropriate. The goal is not to eliminate correction; it is to stop treating every preventable error as if it could only be addressed afterwards.
15. Pair precorrection with acknowledgement of success
A reminder has more learning value when the student receives information that the expected behaviour actually occurred.
After the transition, the teacher might say, “You went straight to your station and kept the tray closed until roles were assigned. That made the start quick.”
The acknowledgement names the same behaviour that was precorrected. This closes the learning loop.

Boundary: the acknowledgement need not be enthusiastic praise every time. For routine expectations, a calm specific recognition may be enough. Excessive praise for ordinary behaviour can feel performative or patronising.
16. Precorrection should fade with competence
If a student succeeds only when reminded, the intervention may have created prompt dependence.
Fading can happen by reducing:
- frequency;
- length;
- visibility;
- teacher proximity;
- explicitness.
A verbal cue becomes a gesture; a gesture becomes a glance at a visual; eventually no prompt is needed.
Concrete example: during the first week, “Before group work, choose roles, then materials.” Later, the teacher only says, “Group start.” Eventually, groups begin independently.
Caveat: fading should follow data, not impatience. If performance collapses when prompts disappear, restore the lightest effective cue and fade more gradually.
17. The teacher should collect enough data to know whether the cue works
Precorrection can feel successful because it seems sensible. A simple record can test that impression.
For one target behaviour, track the proportion of opportunities completed successfully with and without a cue. The record can be tiny: five transitions, yes/no success, cue type.
Concrete example: a student leaves the seat during independent work on four of five days. After a brief pre-task cue and help-card routine, leaving drops to one of five. The teacher then tests a lighter cue.
Boundary: classroom data are not laboratory experiments. Changes may reflect task difficulty, sleep, peers or other factors. The point is disciplined observation, not overclaiming causality from five marks on a clipboard.
18. Precorrection should not become surveillance language
A student should not hear: “I’m watching you,” “Don’t make me come over,” or “I know what you’re going to do.” Those statements predict failure and turn the teacher–student relationship into monitoring of threat.
A precorrection should communicate usable support: “This is the tricky part. Your first step is…”
The difference is relational as well as technical. The teacher is helping the learner enter a situation with a plan.
Boundary: schools still need clear safety boundaries and consequences. Supportive language does not mean pretending serious behaviour is harmless.
19. The cue should preserve dignity across age groups
A picture card that works well for a six-year-old may feel infantilising to a fourteen-year-old. The mechanism can stay the same while the surface changes.
Older students may prefer:
- a private phrase;
- a desk-level written prompt;
- a phone-free visual timer managed by the teacher;
- a pre-agreed gesture;
- a brief check-in before class.
Concrete example: instead of a cartoon “quiet mouth” icon, a Secondary student has a small checklist in the inside cover of the notebook: enter, materials, first task, help route.
Caveat: age-respectful support should not become invisible to the point that it fails. Dignity and effectiveness need to be solved together.
20. Cultural responsiveness matters
Teachers and families may differ in expectations around eye contact, voice level, movement, deference and public correction. A “respectful behaviour” cue should not quietly enforce one cultural interpretation as universal.
Use observable expectations connected to learning and safety. Where possible, explain the purpose: “During this demonstration, we need everyone facing the equipment because there is a safety step you cannot see twice.”
Boundary: cultural responsiveness does not mean abandoning shared classroom expectations. It means defining them clearly, checking unnecessary assumptions, and avoiding humiliation.
21. Neurodivergent learners may need more explicit precorrections
A student with attention, language, executive-function or sensory differences may not infer the upcoming demand from the environment as quickly as peers.
A precorrection can make the hidden transition explicit: “Two minutes until the lights dim for the video. Headphones are in the blue box if you need them.”
Concrete example: before an unstructured group task, a student receives a role card and a preview of the first change in activity.
Boundary: precorrection should not be used as a universal treatment for every difficulty. Individual plans may require specialist input, environmental adaptation or alternative communication supports.
22. Precorrection is different from a threat
A threat names an aversive outcome: “If you talk, you’ll lose break.” A precorrection names the behaviour that leads to success: “During the first five minutes, write your own answer before you discuss.”
Consequences may still exist. The difference is what information the student receives before the task.
Threats can narrow attention to punishment. Precorrections direct attention to the actionable behaviour.
Caveat: a school can communicate consequences transparently. The point is not to conceal them; it is to avoid making punishment the only behavioural instruction.
23. Precorrection can support substitute or relief teaching
Unfamiliar teachers often inherit a class whose routines are known to students but not to the adult. The first instinct may be to wait and see what goes wrong.
A short routine briefing can support precorrection: entry expectation, attention signal, equipment procedure, help route, dismissal sequence.
Concrete example: before practical work, the relief teacher reads the posted routine and gives the same three cues the regular teacher uses.
Boundary: consistency matters, but substitute teachers should not be expected to reproduce undocumented routines by mind reading. Schools need visible systems.
24. Precorrection can be embedded in instructional directions
Good directions and precorrection often touch but are not identical. Directions tell students what the current task requires. Precorrection adds support at a known failure point.
Example direction: “Open to page 42 and complete Questions 1–4.”
Precorrection for a student who rushes and skips diagrams: “Before you write, point to the diagram and say what it shows.”
This is a surgical addition, not a second lecture.
Boundary: if every direction contains a long list of anticipated errors, the teacher can overload the class. Reserve precorrections for recurrent, meaningful bottlenecks.
25. Digital cues can help, but the device is not the intervention
A timer, projected icon or wearable vibration can remind a teacher to deliver a cue or remind a student of a step. Technology can improve consistency.
But the mechanism remains behavioural retrieval at the right moment. A fancy app does not rescue an unclear expectation.
Concrete example: a visual countdown appears two minutes before device shutdown. Students have been taught that at zero they save, close, and place hands on the desk. The countdown is the precorrection cue.
Boundary: digital prompts can become background noise if they are constant. Salience depends on selectivity.
26. Precorrection can become self-precorrection
The strongest long-term outcome is a learner who anticipates their own risk moments.
A teacher can ask before a familiar challenge: “What usually goes wrong here, and what’s your first move today?” The student states the plan.
This shifts the cue from teacher-controlled to student-generated.
Concrete example: before receiving returned test papers, a student says, “I read the comments first, circle one fix, and I don’t compare scores until I’ve done that.”
Boundary: self-precorrection requires enough self-awareness and emotional regulation. It should be taught, not demanded as proof of maturity.
27. High-emotion moments require lower verbal load
When a student is already anxious, excited or frustrated, a long reminder can fail because working memory is occupied.
Precorrection is strongest when given before arousal rises. If the moment is known to be difficult, preview it earlier.
Concrete example: before an assembly, a student and teacher agree on seating, exit route and a discreet break signal. The plan is established while the student is calm.
Boundary: once a student is highly distressed, the situation may require regulation support rather than repeated behavioural prompting.
28. Precorrection should generalise across contexts
A student may learn to follow a cue in one room but not another. Teachers should eventually vary contexts while preserving the underlying expectation.
Concrete example: “Wait behind the boundary until equipment is assigned” is practised in Science, Art and PE with different physical setups.
The common principle becomes portable even when the cue wording changes.
Caveat: generalisation does not happen automatically. Students may need explicit discussion of what is the same across contexts.
29. Precorrection cannot substitute for a workable environment
If a room is overcrowded, instructions are contradictory, tasks are inaccessible, transitions are rushed and consequences are inconsistent, more reminders will not solve the system.
The teacher should ask whether the environment is producing preventable errors.
Concrete example: repeated pushing occurs at one narrow doorway. A precorrection about walking may help, but staggered dismissal or a different route may remove the bottleneck more effectively.
The best behavioural intervention is sometimes redesign.
30. The end point is independent, context-sensitive behaviour
A successful precorrection disappears into competence. The student recognises the context, retrieves the expectation and acts without external prompting.
The teacher’s question changes from “Did my reminder work?” to “Can the student now do this without me?”
That is why fading matters. A permanent prompt may manage behaviour without building independence.
Worked case 1 — The transition that always became noisy
A Primary 4 class moved from whole-class Mathematics to table groups three times each week. The teacher routinely spent two minutes correcting chair scraping, shouting and wandering.
The new plan targeted only three actions: chairs in, folders closed, move directly to the numbered table. The teacher taught and rehearsed the sequence once. For the next week, the class received a ten-second precorrection before movement. The teacher acknowledged groups that completed the sequence cleanly.
Noise fell, but the teacher did not declare victory. The cue was shortened to “chairs, folders, tables,” then to a hand signal, then removed on two of the three weekly transitions. When performance remained stable, the prompt became occasional.
The mechanism was not stricter discipline. It was moving support before the failure point and fading it after the routine became reliable.
Worked case 2 — The student who reacted badly to public reminders
A Secondary student regularly talked during silent starter work. Public reminders produced eye-rolling and argument.
The teacher and student agreed on a private cue: the teacher would place a small sticky flag at the top corner of the desk before the starter. It meant “first three minutes silent; write before asking.” When the student met the expectation, the flag disappeared without comment.
After two weeks, the teacher used the flag only on days when the class entered from PE, the highest-risk context. Eventually the student began setting up independently.
The change was not merely in behaviour. The cue preserved status and removed the public contest.
Worked case 3 — The reminder that failed because the task was impossible
A pupil repeatedly left their seat during a dense comprehension worksheet. The teacher used precorrections: “Stay seated until Question 5.” Behaviour did not improve.
A closer check showed the pupil could decode the passage only with heavy support. Leaving the seat was partly an escape from inaccessible work.
The teacher changed the reading task, supplied a smaller chunk and taught a help routine. The new precorrection became, “Read the first paragraph, underline one sentence, then show the help card if you’re stuck.”
The case shows why behavioural support must stay connected to instructional diagnosis.
Worked case 4 — From teacher prompt to self-prompt
A student often reacted impulsively when marked work was returned. The teacher initially precorrected privately: “Read comments first; no score comparison for two minutes.”
After several successful cycles, the teacher asked, “What’s your plan when papers come back?” The student named the steps independently. Later, the question was removed and the student wrote the plan on the inside cover of the folder.
The intervention moved from teacher reminder to self-precorrection.
Practical route for teachers
Start by identifying one recurring context, not one “difficult student.” Ask what reliably happens before the behaviour. Define a replacement action that is observable and realistic. Confirm that it has been explicitly taught.
Then design the smallest cue likely to work. Deliver it immediately before the risk window. Watch the next behaviour. If the student succeeds, acknowledge the exact action. If the cue fails, ask whether the expectation was known, the cue was timely, the task was accessible and the support was intense enough.
Collect a tiny amount of data across several opportunities. Once success is stable, fade. If performance drops, restore a lighter cue and test again.
Avoid turning precorrection into a constant narration of everything students might do wrong. Select high-value moments.
Practical route for learners
You can use precorrection on yourself.
Before a situation that usually goes badly, ask three questions:
- What is about to happen?
- What do I usually do that makes it harder?
- What is my first successful action instead?
Keep the answer small. “When the paper comes back, read comments first.” “When group work starts, take the recorder role.” “When the timer starts, do one question before checking messages.”
The purpose is not to predict failure. It is to decide before the moment gets fast.
Practical route for parents and families
At home, precorrection works best around predictable transitions: leaving the house, beginning homework, stopping a device, packing a school bag, preparing for sleep.
Teach the routine first. Then remind briefly before the difficult moment. Avoid repeating the whole history of previous mistakes.
Instead of “Every night you waste time and then complain,” try: “Ten minutes until homework. Water, desk, first task.” If the child begins successfully, notice the action rather than launching into another lecture.
For older children, agree on cues together. A pre-arranged phrase can feel far less controlling than repeated parental warnings.
Common failure modes
- Giving the reminder after the behaviour has already occurred.
- Saying “remember the rules” when the rule was never explicitly taught.
- Targeting vague traits such as “be mature.”
- Publicly reminding one student before every class.

It is more precise than that. Effective precorrection is timed to a predictable risk moment and names a usable behaviour, often with a support level matched to the student.
Should every student receive a precorrection?
No. Use group reminders when a whole class shares a risk point and individual cues when a particular learner benefits. Remove cues that are no longer needed.
Does precorrection work only with young children?
No. The surface should change with age, but adolescents and adults also use pre-performance cues. Older students usually need more private, collaborative and age-respectful forms.
What if the student ignores the cue?
Check whether the expectation is known, the cue was timely, the task is achievable and the prompt intensity was sufficient. If necessary, use the school’s normal correction process after the behaviour. Precorrection does not eliminate accountability.
Can a visual cue count as a precorrection?
Yes, if its meaning is known and it appears before the target situation. Visual, verbal, gestural and modelled cues can all serve the function.
When should the prompt be faded?
When the student begins succeeding reliably. Reduce frequency or intensity and check whether performance transfers without the cue.
Can students precorrect themselves?
Yes. That is a valuable long-term goal. Students can learn to identify predictable risk situations and state their own first successful action before entering them.

The final idea
Precorrection is a small intervention built on a large insight: behaviour is easier to change before the critical moment than after it has gathered momentum.
A useful precorrection does not rehearse yesterday’s failure. It names tomorrow’s first successful action. It arrives just before the relevant context, uses the lightest cue that works, and disappears as the learner becomes independent.
When a classroom repeatedly breaks at the same point, the question is not only, “What consequence should follow?” It is also, “What does the learner need to remember ten seconds earlier?”
