A teacher knows what will happen when the class moves from independent work to collecting science equipment.
Chairs scrape. Three students rush to the cupboard. Someone reaches across another table. A group starts arguing about who carries the glassware. The teacher says, “Stop running!” after the first student has already run.
Now change one thing.
Ten seconds before the transition, the teacher says: “When I release your table, one equipment manager walks to the tray station. Everyone else stays seated. Carry the beaker with two hands. Table 3, tell me the three steps.”
The transition begins.
That small shift — from correcting after a predictable problem to cueing the expected action before the difficult moment — is the subject of this article.
In behaviour research and classroom guidance, this is often called precorrection. The word sounds technical, but the idea is wonderfully practical. If a teacher already knows where a behaviour tends to fail, why wait for the failure before making the correct action visible?
A precorrection is not a threat. It is not a lecture. It is not “I’m warning you.” It is not public shaming disguised as prevention. Properly used, it is closer to a just-in-time instruction: here is the situation you are about to enter; here is the behaviour that will help you succeed in it.
That distinction matters because classrooms contain dozens of predictable friction points: entering, leaving, distributing materials, changing activities, starting group work, speaking in discussion, using devices, asking for help, submitting work, lining up, moving through corridors, beginning a test, returning from recess. Many behaviour problems are not mysterious. They happen in the same place, at the same time, under the same demands.
If the pattern is predictable, the support can arrive early.
The 50-second answer
Precorrection works by placing a brief, specific reminder of the expected behaviour immediately before or during a situation where that behaviour is likely to be difficult.
The practical sequence is:
- identify a recurring situation where behaviour breaks down;
- decide what the student should do instead, in observable terms;
- give the cue close enough to the moment that it can guide action;
- keep the language short, positive and actionable;
- let the student perform the behaviour;
- acknowledge successful use when useful;
- collect evidence about whether the problem is actually decreasing; and
- fade the prompt when the learner no longer needs it.
The U.S. What Works Clearinghouse’s December 2024 practice guide on teacher-delivered behavioural interventions for Grades K–5 gives strong-evidence support to reminding students to engage in expected behaviours. Its discussion of precorrection describes prompts that can be verbal, visual or gestural and recommends anticipating challenging situations, using supportive action-oriented language, and acknowledging the expected behaviour when it occurs.
That does not mean every reminder works. An endless stream of “remember, remember, remember” can become wallpaper. A vague warning such as “behave yourself” gives little usable information. A public reminder aimed at one student can become humiliation. A prompt delivered thirty minutes before the problem may be forgotten. A cue that never fades can create dependence.
The mechanism is precise: predict the point of difficulty, cue the replacement behaviour, then give the learner a real chance to do it.
1. Why correction is often late by definition
Correction matters. Students sometimes need to be stopped, redirected or taught after an error. But correction has a timing disadvantage: the unwanted behaviour has already started.
Consider a learner who repeatedly calls out during whole-class questioning.
The teacher asks a question. The learner shouts the answer. The teacher says, “Remember to raise your hand.” The learner apologises.
Twenty seconds later, another question comes. The learner calls out again.
From the adult’s perspective, the instruction has been given. From the learner’s perspective, the reminder may have arrived after the exact cue that triggers the habitual response. The question itself may rapidly evoke answering aloud. Once the response has happened, “raise your hand” is retrospective information.
A precorrection changes the sequence:
“Next question is think time first. If you have an answer, keep it in your head and raise your hand when I say ‘show me.’”

The expected behaviour is now mentally available at the moment it is needed.
This is not magic. The learner may still call out. But the teacher has changed the conditions of the attempt. The student is not being asked to reconstruct the desired behaviour only after failure.

2. The central question: what should the student do instead?
Adults are often much clearer about unwanted behaviour than wanted behaviour.
“Don’t run.”
“Stop interrupting.”
“Don’t mess around.”
“Be sensible.”
“Behave.”
These statements identify a problem but may not specify the replacement action.
A useful precorrection translates the rule into something visible and performable.

The difference is not cosmetic. A negative rule requires the learner to inhibit one action and then generate an alternative. A specific positive instruction reduces that search. It gives the learner a behaviour to execute.

3. Precorrection is a timing mechanism
The content of a reminder matters. Timing matters just as much.

4. Why predictable difficulty is an advantage
Teachers sometimes feel frustrated because the same problem happens every day.
But repetition contains information.
If the same student becomes noisy when materials are distributed, that pattern tells us where support belongs. If a class becomes disorderly during the last three minutes before dismissal, that tells us when expectations need to be made especially visible. If a learner leaves their seat whenever a multistep writing task begins, the task transition is diagnostic.
A predictable problem is easier to design around than a random one.
The teacher can ask:
- When does it happen?
- Where does it happen?
- What happens immediately before it?
- What should the learner do instead?
- What is the smallest cue that could make that action easier to remember?

5. The cue can be verbal, visual or gestural
Teachers often imagine a reminder as speech.
“Remember to raise your hand.”
“Walk, please.”
“Check the rubric before submitting.”
Speech works. It is not the only option.
A visual cue can be more discreet and more durable:
- a three-step card on the desk;
- a symbol beside the classroom door;
- a picture sequence for equipment collection;
- a checklist on the board before a transition;
- a small sticky note reading “stop → read → plan” before a test;
- a coloured card indicating discussion volume.
A gesture can work when the learner already understands its meaning:
- one finger pointing to the agenda;
- a hand signal for voice level;

- eye contact followed by a pre-agreed gesture.
The best format is the one that the learner can notice without unnecessary social cost.

A precorrection should lower the risk of failure, not increase the risk of public embarrassment.
6. The cue needs to be small enough to use
A reminder can become a speech.
“Right, when we go outside I don’t want a repeat of yesterday. You need to remember that the corridor is shared, people are trying to work, and last time several of you were talking and some were running, and I have already said…”
By the time the speech ends, attention is gone and the actual behaviour is buried.
Good precorrections are often compressed.
“Library transition: walk, whisper, sit with your assigned partner.”
“Discussion: disagree with the idea, not the person.”
“Test start: name, scan pages, read the command word before writing.”
“Lab: goggles on before equipment moves.”
A prompt is not a re-teaching session. If the routine has never been taught, teach it. If the learner does not understand the expectation, explain it. The precorrection then becomes the short retrieval cue that activates something already learned.
This gives us an important boundary:

7. Precorrection works best when paired with a genuine opportunity to succeed
Suppose a teacher says, “Remember to wait your turn,” then immediately asks a question, answers it themselves and moves on. The student had no opportunity to practise waiting and participating.
Or the teacher says, “Remember to ask for help before giving up,” but then spends twenty minutes unavailable.
A cue needs an action opportunity.
The sequence is:
prompt → opportunity → behaviour → response
Without the opportunity, the prompt remains verbal knowledge.
This is why transitions are so useful for precorrection. They happen frequently enough to create repeated practice opportunities. A class may enter the room 180 times across a year. A routine can become very strong if the cue and action are repeated consistently, then faded.
The same applies to academic behaviour. If a learner is taught to use “read → underline command word → estimate time” before extended questions, the exam paper provides multiple practice opportunities. Eventually the routine may become self-cued by the appearance of the question itself.
8. What should happen after the expected behaviour occurs?
Especially early in learning, the student benefits from knowing that the action matched the expectation.
This does not require theatrical praise.
“That’s it — one person collected, everyone else stayed seated.”
“You waited, then entered the discussion. Good.”
“You used the checklist before asking me. Keep going.”
The feedback identifies what worked.
As the routine becomes established, the acknowledgement can fade. The natural consequence — smoother work, faster transition, less conflict, better task success — should carry more of the system.
This matters because constant reward for ordinary behaviour can become cumbersome. Precorrection is not supposed to create a permanent adult commentary track.
The endpoint is self-managed successful action.
9. Precorrection is not the same as threat
The words “before the problem” can tempt adults into pre-emptive punishment.
“If you mess around again, you’ll lose recess.”
That is not what this article means by precorrection.
A threat centres the consequence after failure. A precorrection centres the behaviour before the opportunity.
Compare:
Threat: “If anyone talks during the test, I’ll take the paper.”
Precorrection: “During the test, questions come to me by raised hand; voices stay off so everyone can think.”
Consequences may still exist. Schools need boundaries. But the preventive teaching move is different from announcing punishment.
This distinction also protects the adult–student relationship. The learner hears, “Here is how to succeed here,” rather than “I expect you to fail.”
10. Precorrection is not the same as non-verbal correction

The difference is timing.
Non-verbal correction occurs when behaviour is already beginning to drift. A teacher catches the student’s eye, points to the task, moves closer or uses another agreed signal.
Precorrection occurs before the predictable drift.
Same gesture, different mechanism.

11. Precorrection is not the same as antecedent-based intervention as a whole
Antecedent-based intervention is broader. It changes what happens before behaviour in order to alter the probability of that behaviour.
That can include changing task difficulty, offering choice, altering seating, adjusting materials, changing schedules, increasing predictability or modifying how instructions are delivered.
Precorrection is one specific antecedent strategy: cue the expected response before the known risk point.
That narrow owner matters because teachers can implement it quickly, observe it easily and fade it deliberately.
12. Precorrection is not a substitute for inaccessible work
Suppose a student leaves their seat every time extended writing begins.
A teacher could precorrect: “Stay seated and write the first sentence before asking for help.”
But what if the student cannot generate the sentence because they lack vocabulary, do not understand the prompt or cannot organise the paragraph?
The cue may suppress movement without solving the academic barrier.
This is the most important caveat in this article.
Behaviour can contain information.
If precorrection repeatedly fails, ask whether the environment is demanding something the learner cannot yet perform. The problem may require instructional adaptation, a scaffold, prerequisite teaching or a functional assessment.
Precorrection is strongest when the learner can perform the expected behaviour but is likely to forget, rush, revert to habit or lose it under predictable conditions.
13. A Primary classroom example: entering after recess
The problem: students return from recess energised. The first five minutes are noisy. Bags stay open, water bottles roll under desks, and the opening task starts late.
The teacher identifies a three-step entry routine:
- bag under table;
- bottle on the floor beside chair;
- start the question on the board.
Before students enter, a visual card at the doorway shows the three steps. The teacher points to it and asks the first two students, “What happens after your bag goes under?”
Students enter.
The teacher narrates one successful example: “Mia has bottle down and has already started Question 1.”
Across several days, the class needs fewer verbal reminders. The visual remains. Later, the visual moves inside the room. Eventually it disappears.
The important part is not the specific routine. It is the fade.

The problem: every time laptops open, several students check unrelated websites before the assigned task begins.
A punitive system waits, catches the behaviour and issues consequences.
A precorrection system places the instruction at the opening moment:
“Lids open to forty-five degrees. First screen is the learning platform. Do not open a second tab until your partner has checked Question 2.”
The teacher can combine this with a visual on the projector.
Why might this work better than “stay on task”?
Because “stay on task” is abstract. The precorrection defines what the first thirty seconds should look like.
Then the teacher needs evidence.
How many students open the correct page within one minute? Does unrelated browsing fall? Does the routine survive after the visual cue is reduced?
The target is not obedience for its own sake. It is reducing the attentional cost of device switching so learning starts before distraction captures the session.
15. An examination example: rushing into the answer
Precorrection can support academic behaviour too.
A learner repeatedly begins long examination questions before reading the command word. The teacher has already taught command words and timing. The problem is implementation under pressure.
A self-precorrection might be written on the cover of the practice paper:
Before every 4+ mark question: circle command word → underline scope → estimate time.
The learner rehearses this during timed practice.
Eventually the visual reduces to three letters:
C – S – T
Later, nothing is written. The appearance of a long question itself triggers the routine.
This is precorrection evolving into automatic self-management.

16. Common failure mode: the prompt is vague
“Make good choices.”
“Be respectful.”
“Focus.”
These may be school values. They are often poor just-in-time prompts because the learner has to translate them into action while already entering a difficult situation.
A better prompt tells the student what success looks like now:
“Eyes on the speaker; wait until they finish; disagree with the idea using evidence.”
Concrete does not mean childish. Adults use specific checklists in aviation, surgery and engineering because high-level values still need operational steps.
17. Common failure mode: reminder inflation
A teacher sees precorrection work and starts precorrecting everything.
“Remember to sit. Remember to open your book. Remember to write the date. Remember to use a pencil. Remember to listen…”
The prompts lose signal value.
Use precorrection where risk is predictable and meaningful. Let established routines run without narration.
A good classroom is not one in which the teacher successfully prompts every behaviour forever. It is one in which prompts are strategically temporary.
18. Common failure mode: public targeting
“Remember what happened yesterday, Noah.”
Everyone looks at Noah.
The teacher has delivered a prompt and a social label simultaneously.
If one student needs an individual cue, use a discreet format wherever possible. A quiet sentence, desk card, visual symbol or gesture can preserve dignity.
Whole-class prompts are appropriate when the expectation applies genuinely to the whole class. Do not use the whole group as camouflage for repeated public messages to one child.
19. Student route: design your own precorrections
Learners can use the mechanism deliberately.
Think of one repeated failure that happens in a predictable situation.
Phone distraction: before studying, place the phone outside reach and put the first study task on screen.
Procrastination: set the book open to the first question and write “open notes, then timer” on a card.
Exam rushing: write “command word → marks → answer” at the top of the paper during reading time if permitted.
Calling out: place a small dot on the page meaning “pause before speaking.”
Forgetting materials: put a three-item exit checklist inside the locker door.
Starting arguments in group work: use a personal rule: “ask one question before disagreeing.”
The mechanism is the same. Predict the difficult moment while calm, then place the cue where the decision will occur.

20. Parent route: prompt the routine, not the child’s character
Home contains predictable friction points too: leaving for school, beginning homework, packing a bag, stopping a game, preparing for bed.
Parents can use precorrection without turning family life into constant instructions.
Before homework:
“You’re starting mathematics in two minutes. What is your first step when a question feels hard?”
Before leaving:
“Shoes, bottle, homework folder. Check them before we open the door.”
Before a sibling joins a game:
“If you disagree about the rules, pause the game and ask me before changing them.”
Notice the difference between prompting a routine and making a character judgment.
“You always forget everything” gives a child an identity.
“Check bottle, folder, keys” gives a child an action.

21. Teacher route: a five-step design cycle
A practical teacher can begin tomorrow.
Step 1: choose one repeat problem
Do not fix the whole class at once. Select a transition or behaviour that occurs often enough to observe.
Step 2: describe the replacement behaviour
Write what a camera would see or a microphone would hear.
Step 3: select the cue
Verbal, visual, gestural or combined. Put it close to the moment of need.
Step 4: observe ten opportunities
How many times does the expected behaviour occur with the prompt? Do not rely only on impression.
Step 5: adjust or fade
If success improves, reduce support gradually. If nothing changes, diagnose more deeply rather than simply increasing volume.
This turns behaviour support into a small learning cycle rather than a sequence of emotional reactions.
22. What the evidence can and cannot tell us
The What Works Clearinghouse practice guide is useful because it synthesises classroom research and assigns evidence levels to recommendations. The December 2024 guide rates reminding students to engage in expected behaviours as supported by strong evidence.
That does not mean every form of reminder has been separately proven for every age, subject and context.
Practice guides combine research evidence with expert interpretation. Studies differ in population, outcome, implementation and intensity. A verbal precorrection for one child during mathematics is not identical to a whole-class visual prompt during a transition.
So educators should use the evidence at the right resolution.
The evidence supports the general strategy of well-designed reminders/precorrections as a low-intensity behavioural intervention. The local implementation still needs checking.
Ask:
- Did the target behaviour improve?
- Did learning time increase?
- Did prompts decrease over time?
- Did the student experience the cue as supportive?
- Did another problem appear elsewhere?
- Is the prompt still needed?
Evidence-informed teaching does not mean outsourcing judgment. It means making judgment answerable to evidence.
23. Precorrection and inclusion
A predictable cue can be especially useful for learners who benefit from explicit routines, visual supports, processing time or reduced ambiguity.
But inclusion requires caution.
Do not assume every behavioural difference is defiance. A student may be responding to sensory load, language demands, anxiety, executive-function difficulty, inaccessible work or unclear expectations. A precorrection can support participation, but it should not be used to force surface compliance while the underlying barrier remains untouched.
Ask the learner what helps.
The WWC guidance explicitly recommends considering student feedback and preferences when designing reminders. That small point deserves emphasis. Adults can be wrong about which cue is discreet, understandable or useful.
One learner may prefer a quiet verbal reminder. Another may hate being approached publicly and prefer a desk card. Another may want a gesture. Another may say the visual is confusing.
Support works better when the person receiving it can help shape it.
24. The ordinary-weekday test
It is 1:55 p.m. The class is tired. Group work starts in five minutes. Yesterday, the same transition produced three arguments and a ten-minute reset.
A weak plan is hope.
A punitive plan is to wait until someone fails and escalate.
