Artists therefore need more than inspiration. They need ways to reduce possibility into a workable problem, generate alternatives, notice what is happening, preserve useful accidents, reject weak directions, test uncertain ideas and decide when further change will make the work worse rather than better.

Creative work is not idea → masterpiece. It is question → attempt → evidence → revision → selection → release.
1. Creativity Is Not a Lightning Strike
Ideas can arrive suddenly, but professional practice cannot depend on waiting for them. Artists build conditions in which ideas are more likely to emerge: observing, collecting, researching, sketching, making and comparing.
2. Start With a Question
“Make something good” is too broad. “How can repeated paper folds make fragility visible?” creates a problem that can be tested. Productive questions constrain without predetermining the answer.
3. Start With an Observation
A project can begin from something noticed: a pattern of light, a social ritual, a damaged object, a sentence, a sound, a map, a memory or a material behaviour. Attention supplies raw material.
4. Start With a Material
Sometimes the material comes first. A maker discovers that wax fractures, paper transmits light or metal reflects viewers. The behaviour generates the question rather than merely serving it.
5. Start With a Constraint
One colour, one room, one repeated object, one hour or one rule can reduce overwhelming possibility. Constraints make differences comparable.
6. Start With a Commission
Many artworks begin from external requirements: site, patron, budget, deadline, audience, theme or format. Constraint does not eliminate creativity; it defines the field in which creativity operates.
7. Start With a Failure
A failed project can expose a more interesting problem than the original one. A cracked surface, impossible scale or rejected composition can become evidence about what the work actually needs.
8. Research
Research expands the maker’s model of the problem. It may involve art history, material science, interviews, archives, field observation, photographs, reading, experiments or visits to relevant places.
9. Research Is Not Decoration
Research matters when it changes decisions. A historical fact that never affects form, material, interpretation or ethics may remain background rather than active artistic knowledge.
10. References
Artists learn from photographs, objects, other artworks, diagrams, films, landscapes, archives and direct observation. References reduce reliance on vague memory.
11. Reference Is Not Copying
A reference provides evidence or a starting relation. Copying reproduces more directly. Both can be legitimate in learning, but published work requires awareness of authorship, context and intellectual property.
12. Influence
No artist develops outside culture. Influence becomes productive when it is understood, transformed and combined rather than merely repeated.
13. Collecting
Sketchbooks, photographs, notes, screenshots, colour samples, objects and quotations can form a working archive. The archive increases the number of connections available later.
14. Incubation
Some problems benefit from time away. Incubation allows associations to reorganise outside direct effort. It is useful when paired with prior work, not as a substitute for starting.
15. Sketching
A sketch is a low-cost experiment. It lets the artist externalise an idea before committing expensive material, time or scale.
16. Thumbnails
Small thumbnails are especially useful for composition because detail cannot dominate. Large value masses, placement and hierarchy become visible quickly.
17. Studies
A study isolates one uncertainty: colour, anatomy, light, material, movement or scale. Good studies answer questions rather than merely producing smaller versions of the final work.
18. Maquettes
Three-dimensional models allow artists to test mass, balance and site before full-scale fabrication. A maquette reduces cost while preserving key spatial relationships.
19. Prototypes
A prototype tests function or behaviour. Interactive, digital and installation art often require prototypes because the final work contains systems that must operate, not merely look correct.
20. Generate Alternatives
The first workable solution can feel convincing because there is nothing to compare it with. Generating alternatives reveals whether the first idea is genuinely strong or merely available.
21. Change One Variable
Keep composition constant and change colour. Keep material constant and change scale. Keep subject constant and change viewpoint. Controlled variation reveals causal relationships.
22. Change Everything
Occasionally the local search space becomes exhausted. A radical alternative—different medium, scale or framing—can reveal possibilities incremental revision cannot reach.
23. Divergence
Divergent phases generate options without judging too early. Their job is breadth.
24. Convergence
Convergent phases compare options against the project’s aims and constraints. Their job is selection.
25. Do Not Confuse the Two Phases
Criticising every idea during generation can kill exploration. Generating endlessly during final selection can prevent commitment. Strong workflows alternate expansion and narrowing deliberately.
26. Selection
Selection is one of the central creative acts. The maker decides which possibility deserves resources and which does not.
27. Selection Needs Criteria
Criteria can include conceptual fit, visual strength, material behaviour, originality, feasibility, audience experience, safety, cost and ethical implications. Different projects weight these differently.
28. Making Produces New Information
The plan is never the whole work. Once material is handled, unexpected evidence appears: a colour behaves differently, scale feels wrong, a join becomes beautiful, a surface fails. Making updates the model.
29. Follow Useful Accidents
An accident is valuable when it solves or reframes the artistic problem. Preserve it long enough to test rather than automatically correcting it back to the plan.
30. Do Not Worship Accidents
Unexpected does not mean good. Selection remains necessary. Chance produces candidates; judgment determines what belongs.
31. Failure Is Measurement
A failed attempt tells the maker that a prediction was wrong. The useful response is diagnostic: what exactly failed—structure, material, composition, communication, scale or execution?
32. Separate Failure Types
A technically failed casting and a conceptually weak sculpture are different problems. Repair depends on identifying the layer that failed.
33. Keep Failure Records
Photographs, notes and rejected studies prevent the same failure from being rediscovered repeatedly. They also reveal progress that memory hides.
34. Revision
Revision changes a work in response to evidence. It may involve adding, removing, moving, simplifying, clarifying, obscuring or rebuilding.
35. Revision Is Not Decoration
Adding more detail can feel like progress while avoiding the actual structural problem. Revision should target causes rather than symptoms.
36. Subtraction
Removing an element can improve hierarchy, unity and clarity. Every part consumes attention. If an element contributes little, its absence may strengthen the whole.
37. Simplification
Simplification preserves the important relation while reducing noise. It is not the same as making a work simplistic.
38. Reordering
Sometimes all necessary elements exist but their sequence or placement is wrong. Reordering can transform narrative, hierarchy or rhythm without adding anything new.
39. Scaling
Changing size can solve or create problems. An idea that feels trivial at postcard scale may become immersive at wall scale; a monumental idea may become intimate when reduced.
40. Material Change
If the current material fights the idea continuously, changing medium may be more productive than forcing technique harder. Material fit is part of revision.
41. Feedback
Other viewers reveal what the maker can no longer see because familiarity has normalised the work. Feedback is evidence about reception, not an instruction to obey every opinion.
42. Ask Better Critique Questions
“Do you like it?” produces preference. “Where did you look first?” “What did you think this material was doing?” and “Where did the work become confusing?” produce more diagnostic information.
43. Critique Is Not Voting
A majority preference does not determine the work. The artist interprets feedback against the project’s aims.
44. Distance
Physical distance can reveal composition. Temporal distance can reveal attachment. Leave a work for a day or week and familiar decisions may become visible again.
