How Museum Works | Documentation Backlog Is Institutional Debt

Museum documentation backlogs, retrospective documentation, cataloguing backlogs, undocumented collections and inventory reconciliation are not merely clerical inconvenience: they are accumulated uncertainty about what a museum holds, where it came from, where it is, what status it has and what the institution is responsible for. A museum can inherit decades of accession cards, uncatalogued boxes, temporary numbers, incomplete provenance, old spreadsheets, missing locations and objects whose physical identity no longer maps cleanly to the database. The collection may still be physically present while institutional knowledge has fallen behind.
