Fatigue and machine translation

Machine translation can reduce typing but increase monitoring demands.

Fluent machine output can require sustained skepticism.

The reviewer must repeatedly ask:

  • Is the meaning complete?
  • Did the system invent certainty?
  • Is terminology correct?
  • Did it preserve negation?
  • Did it resolve ambiguity correctly?
  • Is this merely fluent or actually faithful?

That vigilance is tiring.

Do not assume post-editing is cognitively light because the target text already exists.

In some projects, verification fatigue is the main bottleneck.

Use micro-breaks to protect decision quality

A break does not need to be long.

Short resets can interrupt the accumulation of visual and cognitive strain.

Useful micro-breaks may include:

  • looking away from the screen;
  • standing;
  • stretching;
  • drinking water;
  • walking briefly;
  • relaxing the hands;
  • changing focal distance.

The purpose is not to optimize wellness theatrically.

It is to restore enough attention that the next translation decision is made deliberately.

Do not turn break optimization into another task

A fatigue system can become absurdly elaborate.

You do not need a spreadsheet of every blink, cup of water and minute of focus.

Use the smallest structure that changes behavior.

For many translators, three things are enough:

  1. identify the high-load work;
  2. notice clear fatigue signals;
  3. stop or switch tasks before errors compound.

Complex tracking is useful only when the problem is hard to see.

Build a personal fatigue profile

Different translators fatigue differently.

One person loses lexical speed first.

Another begins making formatting errors.

Another becomes overly literal.

Another starts over-editing simple sentences.

Track the earliest reliable sign.

For one week, make a brief note when you notice a quality drop:

  • time into session;
  • task type;
  • first symptom;
  • whether a break helped;
  • whether errors had already increased.

Patterns will emerge.

The purpose is prediction.

If you know your first warning sign, you can respond before the session deteriorates.

Worked example: lexical fatigue

A translator who normally retrieves common phrases quickly begins searching for simple words after ninety minutes.

The source has not become harder.

This is a signal.

Instead of spending more time on each ordinary phrase, the translator takes a short reset or switches to a numbers-and-formatting pass.

Later, lexical fluency returns.

The fatigue-aware workflow protects both time and confidence.

Worked example: over-editing fatigue

Another translator becomes less decisive when tired.

A clear sentence is rewritten four times.

The final version is not meaningfully better.

This is a different fatigue pattern.

The response may be a revision stop rule: if the first accurate natural version passes the meaning and register checks, move on unless a specific defect is identified.

Fatigue budgeting is therefore partly about knowing which inefficient behavior appears under strain.

Sleep and multi-day projects

For long projects, fatigue budgeting extends across days.

Late-night work can borrow attention from the next morning.

A useful project plan asks not only:

How many words can I translate today?

but:

How much high-quality decision capacity do I need tomorrow?

This matters near deadlines.

A heroic final night can create a weak final review.

When possible, reserve fresh attention for the most consequential verification pass.

Use session boundaries to improve restart speed

Fatigue and interruption recovery interact.

Before ending a session, leave a restart packet:

  • last completed segment;
  • next task;
  • unresolved term;
  • current review mode.

This reduces the cognitive cost of beginning again.

The next session does not waste fresh attention reconstructing yesterday’s state.

Fatigue-aware scheduling by document structure

A long document may contain sections of very different difficulty.

Before the session, scan and label sections:

  • hard;
  • routine;
  • mechanical.

Then match them to expected energy.

For example, put the dense methodology section early, routine descriptive sections in the middle, and table verification later.

This is a lightweight form of workload shaping.

The document still gets completed.

The hardest decisions are simply moved to better conditions.

Team translation and fatigue

In team projects, fatigue can affect consistency across translators and reviewers.

Useful practices include:

  • clear handoff notes;
  • shared terminology;
  • limits on excessively long review blocks;
  • second review for high-risk material;
  • avoiding last-minute global terminology changes without verification.

The point is not to police individual stamina.

It is to design a process that does not depend on perfect concentration indefinitely.

Failure mode: using fatigue as an excuse for every hard sentence

Not every struggle means you need a break.

Some sentences are genuinely difficult.

Check whether difficulty is local or global.

If one sentence is hard but the next five are normal, solve the sentence.

If many ordinary sentences have become hard, fatigue is more plausible.

Failure mode: forcing the same pace all day

A fixed words-per-hour target can encourage bad behavior when cognitive conditions change.

Use productivity measures over larger windows.

The objective is completed, verified translation—not maintaining a perfectly flat hourly graph.

Experienced performance often has waves.

The workflow should support them.

Failure mode: doing all QA when exhausted

Mechanical QA may be lower-load than difficult drafting, but final semantic verification still requires attention.

Do not interpret “save QA for later” as “save all quality work for your worst state.”

Match the QA type to the available attention.

A final meaning check deserves enough freshness to detect subtle errors.

A fatigue-budget checklist before a long session

Before beginning, ask:

  • Which section requires the most reasoning?
  • Which decisions have the highest consequence?
  • Which work can be batched later?
  • When will I check whether quality is dropping?
  • What is my stop-loss signal?
  • What lower-load task can I switch to if drafting quality falls?
  • What must remain for a fresh final review?

This takes less than a minute.

It can change how the entire session is allocated.

Transfer: studying

Students can use the same idea.

Do demanding problem solving when concentration is strongest.

Use lower-energy periods for flashcards, organization or routine review.

Do not judge the whole subject as difficult merely because you are trying to learn it while exhausted.

Transfer: writing

Writers can draft complex arguments when fresh and leave formatting, citations or mechanical cleanup for later.

Again, the principle is task-energy matching.

Transfer: decision work

Any work that depends on repeated judgment has a fatigue curve.

Translation makes the curve visible because every sentence is another decision.

The general rule is:

spend your best attention on the decisions whose errors are most expensive.

That is the heart of fatigue budgeting.
