Ten Thinking Words That Travel Everywhere

The first ten words—compare, contrast, classify, identify, describe, explain, predict, estimate, observe and investigate—tell a learner what mental operation to perform. Misunderstanding the command can produce a wrong answer even when the child knows the content.

For example, “identify the material” may require only naming it. “Describe the material” needs relevant properties. “Compare the materials” requires a relationship. “Explain why the material is suitable” requires a reason. The topic stays the same while the academic verb changes the task.

The Task-Word Problem

A child can know the science concept and still answer poorly because the task word is misunderstood. Kai Kai: Confuses Evidence With Opinion

Kai Kai says, “The character is kind because I like him.” The statement gives an opinion about the character, not evidence from the text. He learns to separate the two: opinion = my view; evidence = detail from the passage.

He revises: “The character is kind because he shares his lunch with the new pupil.” Now the claim is supported.

Identify asks for recognition or naming. Describe asks for relevant features. “Identify the shape” → triangle. “Describe the shape” → three sides, three corners, perhaps size or orientation if relevant.

A child who describes when asked to identify may write too much. A child who identifies when asked to describe may write too little.

Describe tells what something is like or what happened. Explain tells how or why. “The ice became water” describes the change. “The ice became water because it gained heat” begins an explanation.
