Dictionary skills are the ability to find the right entry, identify the right sense, read pronunciation and grammar information, interpret usage labels, understand examples and collocations, and decide what information is worth learning. Lexicography is the theory and practice of making dictionaries. Search questions such as “How do I use a dictionary properly?”, “What is a headword?”, “What are dictionary senses?”, “What do labels like formal, informal, countable or C1 mean?”, “How do dictionaries decide which words to include?”, “What is a guideword?”, and “How can a dictionary help vocabulary learning?” all point toward one broader problem: a dictionary entry is not a single definition. It is a structured model of how a lexical item behaves.
A strong learner does not stop at the first definition. They identify the correct headword, then the correct sense, check part of speech, pronunciation, grammar and register, inspect example sentences, notice collocations and phrase patterns, and verify whether the word belongs in the current context. This matters especially for polysemous words such as issue, charge, run, model, current and significant, where a familiar form can have several meanings. It also matters for near-synonyms, technical vocabulary and formal writing, where one dictionary label can prevent an otherwise plausible but inappropriate word choice.

The 60-Second Answer: How Should You Use a Dictionary?
Use a dictionary in this order: form → sense → pronunciation → grammar → labels → examples → collocations → verification → retrieval. First confirm that you have the correct spelling and headword. Then select the sense that fits the sentence. Check pronunciation and part of speech. Read grammar codes and labels such as formal, informal, technical, British, American, countable, uncountable or transitive. Study examples and common phrases. Only then decide what meaning, collocation or usage pattern to record.
Cambridge learner dictionaries explicitly use numbered senses and guidewords to help readers reach the correct meaning of polysemous headwords. They also provide grammar information, common usage patterns, IPA pronunciations, audio and corpus-based examples. Oxford’s 2026 English dictionary updates similarly added new headwords, phrases and senses and reviewed thousands of entries, illustrating that dictionaries are edited lexical systems that evolve as language usage changes.
Part I — The Anatomy of a Dictionary Entry
1. Headword
The headword is the word or phrase listed as the entry. Cambridge defines it as a word or phrase listed separately with its own definition, examples and related information. A headword may represent several senses and grammatical uses.
2. Lemma
In many dictionaries, the headword corresponds roughly to a lemma: a canonical form such as run rather than every inflected form runs, ran, running. Exact conventions vary by dictionary.
3. Part of speech
Entries identify noun, verb, adjective, adverb and other categories. This is not decorative. The correct sense may depend on whether the word is functioning as a noun or verb.
4. Pronunciation
Modern learner dictionaries typically provide IPA and audio. Cambridge offers British and American recordings for many entries. Pronunciation includes not only individual sounds but stress and sometimes variant forms.
5. Sense number
Polysemous words are divided into numbered meanings. The first sense is not automatically the correct one for the sentence being read.
6. Guideword
Cambridge uses guidewords to help users navigate major meaning groups. Guidewords are particularly useful when a headword has many meanings.
7. Definition
A definition describes the meaning under a particular sense. Learner dictionaries often use restricted defining vocabularies so explanations remain accessible.
8. Example sentence
Examples show the word in natural grammar and collocation. They often answer questions that the definition does not: which preposition follows, whether the word is countable, what nouns it modifies and what register it belongs to.
9. Grammar information
Entries may mark countability, transitivity, complement patterns, plural forms, irregular inflections and typical constructions. Cambridge explains that grammar labels can apply to the whole headword or to a specific sense.
10. Usage label
Labels can include formal, informal, slang, literary, old-fashioned, offensive, approving, disapproving, technical, law, computing, medicine, British, American and other regional/domain markers.
11. Collocations and phrases
Many dictionaries include common phrases or collocations. These reveal how the word naturally combines rather than only what it means in isolation.
12. CEFR or proficiency label
Cambridge entries may include A1–C2 labels from the English Vocabulary Profile, indicating typical learner levels for a word, phrase or meaning. These are learning-level signals, not universal measures of difficulty for every person.
Part II — Why the First Definition Is Often Wrong
13. Polysemy
Issue can mean problem, publication edition or the act of formally distributing something. Looking only at sense 1 can produce a wrong answer.
14. Part-of-speech shift
Record as noun and record as verb differ in grammar and pronunciation. The dictionary entry helps separate them.
15. Technical sense
Significant in statistics is not simply “important.” A domain label or example can reveal the specialised meaning.
16. Idiomatic phrase
A word can behave differently inside a fixed expression. Dictionaries often list idioms and phrasal verbs separately because literal word-by-word interpretation fails.
17. Regional sense
A word may carry a sense common in one variety of English and rare in another. Regional labels prevent misreading difference as error.
Part III — Guidewords and Sense Navigation
Guidewords solve one of the largest dictionary-reading problems: long entries. Instead of reading twenty definitions line by line, the learner scans semantic group labels and jumps to the relevant domain.
18. Use the sentence before the dictionary
Infer the likely sense from context first. Then use the dictionary to verify, not to search blindly.
19. Match grammar
If the sentence uses a verb, skip noun senses unless the form can plausibly change category.
20. Match domain
A physics passage makes electrical senses of charge/current/power more likely than everyday meanings.
Part IV — Pronunciation Information
21. IPA
The International Phonetic Alphabet gives a compact representation of pronunciation. Learners do not need to become phonologists, but recognising common English IPA symbols makes dictionary use more independent.
22. Audio
Audio resolves uncertainty that spelling alone cannot. It is especially important for stress, reduced vowels, borrowed spellings and words first encountered in print.
23. British and American variants
Many learner dictionaries provide more than one major pronunciation. Variation is not error; the user should identify the target variety relevant to context.
24. Stress marks
Stress can distinguish word classes and improve intelligibility: REcord versus reCORD, PREsent versus preSENT.
25. Pronunciation plus spelling
Use the dictionary to bind spoken and written forms. A word learned only in print can remain invisible in listening; a word learned only orally can remain hard to spell.
Part V — Grammar Codes and Sentence Patterns
26. Countable and uncountable nouns
A learner can know the meaning of advice and still write *an advice*. Dictionary grammar labels show whether a noun is countable, uncountable or both under different senses.
27. Transitive and intransitive verbs
Discuss normally takes a direct object—discuss the issue—while talk often takes a preposition—talk about the issue. Meaning overlap does not imply identical grammar.
28. Complement patterns
Entries may show verb + to-infinitive, verb + -ing, adjective + preposition and other frames. These patterns are part of vocabulary knowledge.
29. Irregular forms
Plural, comparative and verb forms may be listed when irregular: criterion → criteria, go → went, good → better.
30. Sense-specific grammar
A single word can behave differently under different meanings. Dictionary structure helps users avoid transferring grammar from one sense to another.

Part VII — Example Sentences Are Data
31. Collocation
Examples show which words naturally go together: heavy rain, strong evidence, pose a threat, reach a conclusion.
32. Grammar
Examples reveal whether a verb takes a direct object, a preposition or a clause.
33. Register
The surrounding sentence shows the social setting in which the word is normal.
34. Sense
Examples separate subtle meanings better than definitions alone. Two senses may share a broad gloss but occur in different contexts.
35. Phraseology
Some dictionary entries show fixed or semi-fixed phrases. These should often be learned as units rather than rebuilt word by word.
Part VIII — Collocations, Phrases and Idioms

36. Verb + noun
Make a decision, reach a conclusion, pose a risk, conduct research.
37. Adjective + noun
Strong evidence, severe shortage, plausible explanation, significant difference.
38. Noun + preposition
Increase in, reason for, access to, demand for.
39. Adjective + preposition
Responsible for, capable of, relevant to, susceptible to.
40. Idiomatic meaning
When a phrase’s meaning is not compositionally predictable, dictionaries may list it as an idiom or phrase entry.
Part IX — Frequency and Proficiency Information
41. CEFR labels
A1–C2 labels can help sequence learner vocabulary, but they do not mean every learner at that level knows the item or that higher-level words are inherently better.
42. Frequency
Some dictionary systems mark high-frequency words or use frequency-informed ordering. Frequency is descriptive evidence about usage, not a command to avoid precise low-frequency terms.
43. Sense frequency
Common words often have one dominant sense and several secondary senses. Sense order may be frequency-informed, but users still need context.
44. Range
Lexicographers also care where a word occurs—conversation, news, academic writing, particular regions or professions. A globally rare word can be common in one domain.
Part X — How Words Enter Dictionaries
Cambridge explains that its lexicographers examine the Cambridge English Corpus to see how often a new word appears and in what kinds of contexts. If a form is sustained across contexts rather than ephemeral, it can become a candidate for inclusion. Oxford similarly updates headwords, phrases, senses, definitions, examples and sensitivity information as usage evolves.
45. Attestation
Lexicographers need evidence that a word or sense is actually used. One viral post is not the same as sustained lexical adoption.
46. Frequency and range
Repeated usage across texts, speakers or contexts strengthens the case that a form belongs in a dictionary.
47. New sense, not only new word
Existing words regularly acquire new meanings. Dictionaries therefore add senses as well as headwords.
48. Editorial revision
Definitions and examples can change as language, knowledge and social norms change. Dictionaries are edited records of usage, not immutable tablets.
