Lexical familiarity is useful because it tells us something about accumulated exposure and processing readiness. It is dangerous when the feeling of knowing is accepted as proof of accurate knowledge.
The mature learner treats familiarity as a starting signal: familiar words are tested for meaning, sense, form, retrieval and use. Some pass immediately; others reveal hidden gaps that are inexpensive to repair because the lexical form is already partly established.
“I know this word” should be a hypothesis, not the end of the test.
