Write the current goal in a few words, locate the last step you can still explain and resume from there. If the same distraction recurs, redesign the conditions rather than relying indefinitely on willpower. Move the phone, close the unrelated tab, shorten the work interval, clarify the question or schedule the competing task so it no longer has to be mentally rehearsed.

For teachers, attention design means making the important distinction visible without decorating every element as important. For parents, it means protecting workable conditions without becoming the child’s permanent attention controller. For students, it means learning to notice the moment the task goal has been lost and having a routine for returning. The goal is increasing self-regulation, not an environment that can function only when someone else continuously removes every possible distraction.

The later test is transfer. After the cue, layout or familiar example changes, does the learner still notice the relevant feature? If yes, attention has contributed to a more usable representation. If not, ask whether the learner attended to a surface clue instead of the governing relationship. Change one feature, compare examples and make the decision rule explicit. Attention becomes educationally valuable when better selection produces better understanding and later action.
