Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring UK | Oxford

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

Oxford travel vocabulary for visiting and touring the UK: 100 useful English words and expressions with British-English pronunciation, English meanings, Simplified Chinese translations and bilingual example sentences.

From an Oxford word to a useful question

Oxford is a good place to practise the difference between seeing and explaining. You can admire an object immediately; explaining it asks for a little more care. Start with the language for colleges, libraries or collections. Use the Chinese meaning to establish the idea, then build an English question that you could genuinely ask.

牛津适合练习“看见”和“解释”的区别。你可以立刻欣赏一件物品;要解释它,就需要更仔细一点。先从学院、图书馆或藏品的语言入手。用中文释义理解概念,再组成一个自己真正会问的英语问题。

A worked example: separate observation from provenance

Imagine looking at an old book in a fictional display. “It looks old, so it belonged to a famous scholar” jumps from appearance to an unsupported ownership claim. A better question is: “What does the provenance record tell us about this book’s ownership?” Provenance concerns an object’s history, not simply its age. Read the label’s answer and keep uncertain details uncertain. Precise English makes room for what you do not yet know.

想象在虚构展览里看到一本旧书。“它看起来很旧,所以曾属于某位著名学者”把外观直接变成了没有依据的归属判断。更好的问题是:“来源记录告诉我们这本书曾由谁拥有?”provenance关注物品的来历,不只是年代。阅读说明牌的答案,未确定的细节仍应保留不确定性。准确的英语也能容纳自己尚不知道的事。

A small checkpoint before adding more words

Close the list and explain provenance in your own words. Then ask whether a reading room is included in a visitor tour without assuming access. For a stronger challenge, write two sentences: one observation and one question about evidence.

合上词表,用自己的话解释provenance。再询问游客导览是否包含阅览室,不要预先假定可以进入。想增加难度,可以写两句:一句观察,一句询问证据。

If you need to repair a meaning, return to its entry. If you can explain it, try the conversation without copying. If that feels comfortable, use it in your own paragraph. For a longer practice sequence, continue to How to Improve Vocabulary.

Choose a reading route or vocabulary group

Oxford is a cheerful invitation to ask better questions. A college doorway, a museum label and a bookshop shelf can all turn a sightseeing day into a day of discovery.

This Oxford English–Chinese guide focuses on university life, manuscript study, library records and museum interpretation. It helps you distinguish a college from the wider university, ask about visitor access and explain a collection label without losing the meaning in translation. Start with the setting that interests you most. For general transport and accommodation questions, use the linked Edinburgh guide below.

牛津旅行英语词汇:下面的100项词语和表达包含英语释义、英式英语音标、简体中文及双语例句。先挑选今天会用到的词,再开口练习,一次学几个就很好!

Make this city your next English classroom! This guide focuses on college life, historical manuscripts, library records and museum collections. Some terms are specialist words you may meet on signs, labels or tours; start with ten that match your plans, then try the bilingual examples aloud. For general travel language, the Edinburgh guide covers tickets, transport, hotels, meals and everyday help.

本篇重点是学院生活、历史手稿、图书馆资料与博物馆藏品。部分词是参观说明牌、展品标签或导览时会遇到的专业词。先选十个符合行程的词,读读双语例句,再慢慢扩展。通用交通、住宿与餐饮词汇可参阅爱丁堡篇。

Pronunciation key: / / contains IPA; ˈ marks main stress and ˌ marks secondary stress. These are broad British-English models. Local accents and proper-name pronunciations can vary. The 100 entries include words, useful phrases and local names; choose a themed section that fits your visit.

Choose your Oxford learning route

Here for a trip? Begin with a place or a question you expect to use. Here for English practice? Pick one small word group, check its meanings and work towards a sentence of your own. You can jump straight to the history, pronunciation or writing sections without reading all 100 entries first.

Find a group in the 100-entry list

先选与行程或兴趣有关的一组词。需要了解历史、辨别意思或练习写作时,可以直接跳到对应部分,不必先读完整个词表。每次学少量,能解释、能提问、能再次用出来,比一次记住所有拼写更有用。

Oxford: history you can see

An old university without a precise birthday

The University of Oxford states that it has no clear foundation date, but evidence of teaching exists from 1096. That is more precise than saying the university was definitely founded in that year. Use university for the wider institution and college for a community within its collegiate structure.

Libraries are places of work as well as wonder

The Bodleian is a major academic library system. A visitor tour and access to a working reading room are different arrangements. Reading room, manuscript and catalogue help you ask what the visit includes. Radcliffe Camera is a building name: camera here does not mean a device for taking photographs.

A museum object deserves a careful question

Oxford’s visitor information identifies the Ashmolean as the university’s museum of art and archaeology and describes other university museum routes. Choose one collection that interests you instead of hurrying through every building. Read the label, distinguish a specimen from an artefact and ask about provenance when the origin or ownership history matters.

A relaxed Oxford learning route

Choose a college visit with confirmed visitor access, then pair it with a library tour or museum rather than assuming every academic building is freely open. Leave time for a bookshop and a short walk. A river outing can add punting, punt and towpath to your vocabulary, but book and assess that activity separately. A photograph of a college does not tell you whether its courtyard or reading room is open today.

不必一天看完所有景点。把一个主要参观点、一次轻松散步和一段休息时间放进计划,会更容易享受旅行,也更有机会使用英语。具体开放时间、票价及无障碍条件,请以景点和交通运营方的信息为准。

Three conversations to practise

The replies below are practice examples, not promises from an attraction or operator. Adapt them to your actual booking and listen to the real answer.

At a college entrance

Traveller: Good morning. Is the college open to visitors today? Porter: Please check the visitor notice. Traveller: Thank you. Does admission include the chapel?

游客:早上好。学院今天对游客开放吗?门房工作人员:请查看游客告示。游客:谢谢。门票包含礼拜堂吗?

Choosing a library tour

Traveller: Which parts of the library does this tour include? Are we allowed to take photographs? Is there a step-free option?

游客:这个导览包含图书馆的哪些部分?允许拍照吗?有无台阶参观选择吗?

Reading an object label

Traveller: The label mentions provenance. Does that mean the object’s origin and ownership history? Guide: Yes. Traveller: Where can I read more?

游客:说明牌提到provenance。它指物品的来源和所有权历史吗?导游:是的。游客:我在哪里可以阅读更多资料?

When you need a little more time

“Could you say that again more slowly, please?” “Could you write the name down?” “Let me check that I have understood.” A successful conversation ends with the right meaning, even when you need a second attempt.

“可以请您再慢一点说一遍吗?”“可以写下这个名字吗?”“让我确认一下我理解得对不对。”不需要一次就听懂,确认意思比假装明白更有用。

English–Chinese distinctions that matter in Oxford

An Oxford college is not simply the American everyday use of college for an entire university. Quad is the shortened form of quadrangle in this context. A tutorial is a teaching session, not a visitor tour. Camera in Radcliffe Camera is part of a historical building name. Cherwell has a local pronunciation that is not an obvious letter-by-letter reading; ask a local speaker and listen without embarrassment.

A folio is one leaf with two sides; it is not just one numbered page. A facsimile reproduces an original, while digitisation describes conversion into digital form. A shelfmark identifies a library item so it can be located; a citation identifies a source used in writing. Borrowing and lending describe opposite sides of the same temporary arrangement. A fossil comes from ancient life, while a meteorite comes from space.

folio是一叶,有正反两面,不等于单独的一页。facsimile指摹真复制本,digitisation指转换为数字形式的过程。shelfmark帮助定位馆藏,citation说明写作中使用的信息来源。borrowing是借入,lending是借出,描述的是同一临时借用安排的两方。fossil来自古代生命的遗存,meteorite则来自太空。

Pronunciation that helps people understand you

Use the words in a complete question. Thesis begins with /θ/, and its plural is theses /ˈθiːsiːz/. In bibliography /ˌbɪbliˈɒɡrəfi/, the main stress falls on /ˈɒɡ/. Folio begins /ˈfəʊ/. Try “May I see a facsimile?” and “What does this shelfmark identify?” Keep the written code visible when asking about a library item.
把词放进完整问题中。thesis以/θ/开头,复数theses读/ˈθiːsiːz/;bibliography的主重音在/ˈɒɡ/,folio以/ˈfəʊ/开头。可以问:“我可以看摹真本吗?”或“这个馆藏定位号指什么?”询问馆藏时,把书面编号展示出来。

A local accent may change vowels or rhythm. Keep the written place name available on your phone, repeat what you heard and ask whether you have the right destination. The aim is a clear exchange, not an imitation of an accent.

Turn five words into a real travel skill

Choose college, reading room, provenance, tutorial and punt. Begin with tutorial: explain that it is a teaching session, not a sightseeing tour. Try “A tutorial is a lesson”, then expand the sentence with a learner’s action: “During a tutorial, a student explains an answer and discusses it.” Ask your partner to explain the distinction without reading the model. For reading room, practise asking which spaces a visitor tour includes; learning the term does not grant access. With provenance, separate the history recorded for an object from your own guesses about it. Finish by writing two sentences about one imagined museum object, marking any information you do not know. Progress means that the meaning survives when you change the sentence or translate it—not that you can repeat a polished model from memory.
先解释tutorial是教学活动,不是观光导览。写一句简单英文,再加入学生会做的动作,让同伴不看范例也能说清区别。reading room这个词不代表游客获准进入,仍须询问。使用provenance时,把有记录的物品来源与自己的猜测分开。改写或翻译后,意思仍然准确,才算真正会用。

  • Before leaving: choose five words and make one question with each.
  • At the place: read a real sign or label and check which meaning applies.
  • Afterwards: close the list and explain one experience in your own words.
  • The next day: retrieve yesterday’s five words before adding another five.

For a family, take turns being the traveller, the helpful staff member and the listener who checks the meaning. For an adult learning alone, record a short question, listen once and improve the unclear part. Keep the practice brief enough to enjoy.

家庭练习可以轮流扮演游客、工作人员和检查意思的听众。独自学习时,录下一句问题,听一遍,再改善不清楚的部分。短时间、能坚持的练习,比一次背完100项更轻松。

A short Oxford travel-writing model

The following paragraph is an original writing example, not an account of a documented eduKate visit.

At a college entrance, we asked before going inside. In the museum, we read the label twice: once to understand the object, and once to understand how it had reached the collection. Later, a bookshop gave us a quiet place to compare notes. Oxford felt less like a list of famous buildings and more like a city full of questions.

在学院入口,我们先询问,再进入。到了博物馆,我们把说明牌读了两遍:第一遍了解物品,第二遍了解它如何进入馆藏。后来,书店给了我们一个安静交流笔记的地方。牛津不再只是著名建筑清单,而像一座充满问题的城市。

Now write your own version with one place, one observation and one conversation. Replace a vague word such as nice with the actual feature you noticed. Preserve real names, dates and uncertainties when translating. If you did not enter an attraction, say that you saw its exterior.

Plan the visit with useful English

Pick a college, a library visit or a museum collection as the focus of your Oxford day. Colleges have their own visitor arrangements, so check the chosen college and ask the porter which areas you may enter. For a Bodleian tour, read the description of the rooms included. In a museum, choose one label to explore through provenance or natural history. A bookshop or a riverside walk makes a lovely place to compare notes afterwards. Use the University of Oxford college visitor guide to check your chosen stop.

At Oxford, turn college, porter and tutorial into a polite exchange: “May visitors enter this college today?” and “Could the porter tell us which areas are open?” A tutorial is teaching, not a tour package. For a library item, show the shelfmark when asking a question; for a source used in your writing, record its citation. The two labels help with different jobs.
在牛津,把college、porter和tutorial放进礼貌的交谈中:“游客今天可以进入这所学院吗?”或“门房工作人员可以告诉我们哪些区域开放吗?”tutorial是教学,不是观光套餐。询问馆藏时展示馆藏定位号;写作引用信息时记录出处。这两个名称承担不同用途。

Choose your Bodleian visit using the official tour descriptions and accessibility guidance. Ask which rooms are included and discuss any access needs before booking. A working reading room and a visitor exhibition are different spaces. Keep college access, library access and a riverside outing as separate arrangements, even when they fit into one enjoyable day.
