Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring EU | Ghent is an English–Chinese learning guide built around four things that make Ghent unusually rewarding for a curious traveller: the Ghent Altarpiece, industrial textile history, a medieval canal city shaped by trade, and a food-and-visitor culture that mixes tradition with new accessibility tools. Every numbered entry includes IPA, simplified Chinese, Mandarin pinyin, a clear meaning, an example sentence and a usage distinction.
Ghent’s advantage as a vocabulary city is that one object can open several layers of thinking. The Altarpiece is painting, theology, material object and moving panel structure. A spinning mule is machinery, labour history and energy system. A quay is architecture, transport and commerce. A bowl of waterzooi is culture, ingredients and service. The best English question is therefore often: Which layer am I talking about right now?
This page owns a protected 100-word bank within the EU branch. Its numbered headwords were collision-checked against every repaired EU guide plus the new Rotterdam and Antwerp pages. Ghent therefore does not borrow Antwerp’s diamond/conservation/fashion vocabulary or Rotterdam’s port/flood vocabulary. Familiar ordinary words may still appear naturally in explanations.
城市:Ghent /ɡent/ — 根特 (gēn tè), in Belgium. Belgium is an EU member state and uses euros (EUR). The main local language in Ghent is Dutch. Keep names such as Sint-Baafskathedraal, Gravensteen, Graslei and Korenlei exactly as official maps show them, then explain the concept in English.
Pronunciation: IPA here is a broad learner guide for English headwords. Dutch names and local food names may have local pronunciations. Pinyin reads the Mandarin meaning, not the English pronunciation. Practise one complete sentence so the technical word stays attached to its job.
给中文读者:根特很适合练“分层阅读”。看《根特祭坛画》先分“画板结构、人物、象征”;看工业博物馆先分“纤维处理、纺纱、织布、动力、劳动制度”;看城市先分“城堡、防御、行会、运河、仓库”;吃饭时分“菜名、配料、饮食选择”。
Current visitor note — checked 3 October 2026: the Ghent Altarpiece restoration continues through 31 December 2026. Official visitor information says the upper register of the inner panels is currently under restoration at MSK, with restorers visible live from Tuesdays to Fridays; open and closed views can be seen during the first and last time slots. The St Bavo visitor centre offers an augmented-reality experience, with a tablet alternative for visitors unable to wear AR glasses, and the cathedral/visitor centre/Altarpiece route is described as wheelchair accessible. Advance booking is strongly recommended.

Ghent vocabulary 1–25 | The Ghent Altarpiece: panels, figures and visual structure
The Ghent Altarpiece is a multi-panel visual system, so these words teach you to read arrangement before interpretation. Keep panel structure, represented object and theological meaning separate, and use the official visitor centre when identifying details.

Use the words in clear sentences
1. polyptych
Meaning: an artwork made from several hinged or connected panels. 中文:多联画 (duō lián huà).
Say it: “The Ghent Altarpiece is a polyptych rather than a single-panel painting.”
Use it well: Polyptych describes a multi-panel format. It does not tell you whether every panel is visible at the same time.
2. hinged wing
Meaning: a movable side panel attached by hinges to an altarpiece or similar object. 中文:铰接翼板 (jiǎo jiē yì bǎn).
Say it: “The hinged wing can close over the central panels.”
Use it well: Wing describes the movable side panel, not a literal architectural wing or a bird’s wing.
3. closed view
Meaning: the arrangement visible when the movable panels of an altarpiece are shut. 中文:闭合视图 (bì hé shì tú).
Say it: “The closed view presents a different sequence of figures from the open view.”
Use it well: Closed and open views are two planned display states, not simply front and back.
4. open view
Meaning: the arrangement visible when an altarpiece’s movable wings are opened. 中文:开启视图 (kāi qǐ shì tú).
Say it: “The open view reveals the central sacred scenes.”
Use it well: Use the term for the artwork’s display state. Current viewing arrangements can depend on restoration and time slot.
5. upper register
Meaning: the upper horizontal tier of scenes or figures in a multi-level artwork. 中文:上层画带 (shàng céng huà dài).
Say it: “The upper register contains monumental seated figures and angels.”
Use it well: Register is an art-historical term for a horizontal visual zone, not a written list.
6. lower register
Meaning: the lower horizontal tier of scenes in a multi-level artwork. 中文:下层画带 (xià céng huà dài).
Say it: “The lower register draws the eye toward the central Lamb scene.”
Use it well: Keep upper and lower register separate from foreground and background; they describe vertical tiers in the composition.
7. predella
Meaning: a low horizontal section or platform beneath an altarpiece. 中文:祭坛画下座 (jì tán huà xià zuò).
Say it: “The museum model explains where a predella would sit below the main panels.”
Use it well: Not every altarpiece has a surviving predella. Use the term only when the object’s structure supports it.
8. donor portrait
Meaning: a portrait of the person or people who commissioned or funded an artwork. 中文:捐赠者肖像 (juān zèng zhě xiào xiàng).
Say it: “The donor portraits identify the patrons who commissioned the altarpiece.”
Use it well: Donor or patron portraits represent commissioners; they should not automatically be read as saints or historical witnesses to the sacred scene.
9. grisaille figure
Meaning: a figure painted mainly in shades of grey to imitate sculpture or stone. 中文:灰色单色人物画 (huī sè dān sè rén wù huà).
Say it: “The closed panels include grisaille figures that resemble carved statues.”
Use it well: Grisaille is a painting technique or colour effect. The figure may look sculpted while still being painted.
10. illusionistic niche
Meaning: a painted niche designed to create the illusion of real architectural depth. 中文:错视壁龛 (cuò shì bì kān).
Say it: “The grisaille figure appears to stand inside an illusionistic niche.”
Use it well: The niche is pictorial, not necessarily a physical recess in the wooden support.
11. sacred lamb
Meaning: the symbolic lamb at the centre of the altarpiece’s principal scene. 中文:神圣羔羊 (shén shèng gāo yáng).
Say it: “The sacred lamb stands at the visual and theological centre of the lower scene.”
Use it well: Use the term for the symbolic figure within the Christian iconography, not for an ordinary animal study.
12. central throne
Meaning: the principal throne placed on the central visual axis of a composition. 中文:中央宝座 (zhōng yāng bǎo zuò).
Say it: “The central throne dominates the upper register.”
Use it well: Throne describes the seat and authority symbolism. The identity of the enthroned figure should follow the museum’s interpretation.
13. fountain of life
Meaning: a symbolic fountain associated with spiritual life or salvation. 中文:生命之泉 (shēng mìng zhī quán).
Say it: “The fountain of life appears below the Lamb in the central composition.”
Use it well: This is an iconographic concept, not a literal drinking-water facility.
14. processional cross
Meaning: a cross carried in a religious procession. 中文:游行十字架 (yóu xíng shí zì jià).
Say it: “A processional cross is shown among the approaching groups.”
Use it well: Processional describes liturgical use. A cross depicted in the painting is not itself the physical object used in a modern procession.
15. haloed figure
Meaning: a represented person shown with a halo or nimbus. 中文:带光环人物 (dài guāng huán rén wù).
Say it: “Several haloed figures are distinguished from surrounding crowds.”
Use it well: A halo is an iconographic attribute. It does not by itself identify the specific saint without other evidence.
16. prophet scroll
Meaning: a scroll held by a prophetic figure and bearing written text. 中文:先知卷轴 (xiān zhī juǎn zhóu).
Say it: “The prophet scroll carries text that contributes to the altarpiece’s meaning.”
Use it well: Read the actual inscription or museum translation before paraphrasing its message.
17. sibyl figure
Meaning: a represented sibyl, a female prophetic figure from classical tradition. 中文:女预言家形象 (nǚ yù yán jiā xíng xiàng).
Say it: “A sibyl figure appears alongside prophetic imagery in the upper arrangement.”
Use it well: Sibyl is a specific classical prophetic type, not a generic word for every female figure holding text.
18. angel choir
Meaning: a group of angels depicted singing together. 中文:天使合唱团 (tiān shǐ hé chàng tuán).
Say it: “The angel choir is painted with close attention to faces and music-making.”
Use it well: Choir describes the represented group. It does not guarantee that the written music can be performed directly without specialist interpretation.
19. organ loft
Meaning: an elevated gallery or platform associated with an organ in a church. 中文:管风琴阁楼 (guǎn fēng qín gé lóu).
Say it: “The cathedral’s organ loft belongs to the building, not the painted panel.”
Use it well: Keep real cathedral architecture separate from architectural elements represented inside the altarpiece.
20. singing angel
Meaning: an angel represented in the act of singing. 中文:歌唱天使 (gē chàng tiān shǐ).
Say it: “A singing angel turns toward the group as if following the music.”
Use it well: The phrase describes the represented action. It is an observation about the image, not proof of a specific vocal part.
21. music-making angel
Meaning: an angel depicted performing or participating in instrumental music. 中文:奏乐天使 (zòu yuè tiān shǐ).
Say it: “The music-making angels are shown with instruments and concentrated gestures.”
Use it well: Name the instrument only when it is identifiable from the painting or reliable interpretation.
22. jewelled cope
Meaning: a richly decorated ceremonial cloak represented with jewels or gem-like ornament. 中文:镶宝石斗篷 (xiāng bǎo shí dòu péng).
Say it: “The jewelled cope creates a dense field of colour and reflected light.”
Use it well: Cope is a ceremonial vestment form. Painted jewels are representations, not actual gems attached to the panel.
23. brocade imitation
Meaning: a painted or relief technique imitating luxurious woven brocade. 中文:锦缎仿饰 (jǐn duàn fǎng shì).
Say it: “The garment surface includes brocade imitation rather than real fabric.”
Use it well: Imitation here describes a crafted visual effect. It should not be confused with deception about the artwork’s material.
24. tin relief
Meaning: thin worked tin used to create raised decorative relief beneath or on a painted surface. 中文:锡箔浮雕 (xī bó fú diāo).
Say it: “Tin relief can imitate the texture of rich textile ornament.”
Use it well: This is a materials-and-technique term. It should be confirmed by technical study rather than inferred from shine alone.
25. frame polychromy
Meaning: multi-coloured painting or decoration applied to an artwork’s frame. 中文:画框彩绘 (huà kuāng cǎi huì).
Say it: “Frame polychromy helps integrate the frame with the painted panels.”
Use it well: The frame can be an important historical component. Do not treat all later-looking paint on a frame as modern repainting without evidence.
Ghent vocabulary 26–50 | Textile machinery and industrial work
Ghent’s Museum of Industry preserves textile machinery and working-life stories. These terms follow fibre preparation, spinning, weaving, steam power and labour organisation. They are explanatory museum vocabulary, not instructions for operating historic machinery.

Use the words in clear sentences
26. spinning mule
Meaning: a textile machine combining drawing and spinning actions to make yarn. 中文:走锭纺纱机 (zǒu dìng fǎng shā jī).
Say it: “The Museum of Industry explains how the spinning mule transformed yarn production.”
Use it well: Mule names a specific spinning-machine family. It is not a general synonym for every spinning frame.
27. self-acting mule
Meaning: a mechanised spinning mule in which major operating movements are automated. 中文:自动走锭纺纱机 (zì dòng zǒu dìng fǎng shā jī).
Say it: “The self-acting mule reduced some manual steps in spinning.”
Use it well: Self-acting refers to automation of the machine cycle. It does not mean the machine required no workers or maintenance.
28. carding engine
Meaning: a machine that disentangles and aligns textile fibres before spinning. 中文:梳棉机 (shū mián jī).
Say it: “The carding engine prepares cotton fibres for later drawing and spinning.”
Use it well: Carding opens and aligns fibres; it does not twist them into finished yarn.
29. drawing frame
Meaning: a textile machine that combines and draws fibre slivers to make them more even. 中文:并条机 (bìng tiáo jī).
Say it: “The drawing frame reduces irregularity before the next spinning stage.”
Use it well: Drawing here means elongating and evening fibres, not making an illustration.
30. roving frame
Meaning: a machine that draws fibre into a thinner strand and adds slight twist before final spinning. 中文:粗纱机 (cū shā jī).
Say it: “The roving frame produces material suitable for the spinning machine.”
Use it well: Roving is an intermediate fibre strand. It is not yet the final yarn used for weaving.
31. ring spinner
Meaning: a spinning system using a ring and traveller to insert twist while winding yarn. 中文:环锭纺纱机 (huán dìng fǎng shā jī).
Say it: “The ring spinner winds the newly spun yarn continuously.”
Use it well: Ring spinning differs mechanically from mule spinning. Compare the motion and winding process rather than treating both machines as identical.
32. spinning spindle
Meaning: a rotating shaft used in spinning to twist and wind yarn. 中文:纺纱锭子 (fǎng shā dìng zi).
Say it: “The spinning spindle rotates rapidly during yarn formation.”
Use it well: A spindle is one component of a spinning system, not the whole machine.
33. bobbin creel
Meaning: a frame holding multiple bobbins so threads can feed into a textile process. 中文:筒子架 (tǒng zi jià).
Say it: “The bobbin creel supplies several yarns at the same time.”
Use it well: Creel describes the holding frame. The bobbins and threads remain separate components within it.
34. warp beam
Meaning: a large roller that holds prepared warp yarns on a loom. 中文:经轴 (jīng zhóu).
Say it: “The warp beam releases the lengthwise yarns under controlled tension.”
Use it well: The beam stores warp; it does not insert the weft across the loom.
35. loom reed
Meaning: a comb-like loom component that spaces warp threads and beats weft into place. 中文:筘 (kòu).
Say it: “The loom reed pushes each new weft pick toward the cloth edge.”
Use it well: A reed spaces and beats yarns. It is different from heddles, which lift selected warp threads.
36. heddle frame
Meaning: a frame carrying heddles that raise and lower selected warp threads. 中文:综框 (zōng kuāng).
Say it: “The heddle frame opens the shed for the shuttle to pass.”
Use it well: Heddles control warp position. The reed performs a different job after the weft is inserted.
37. picking mechanism
Meaning: the loom mechanism that propels or inserts the weft carrier across the shed. 中文:投梭机构 (tóu suō jī gòu).
Say it: “The picking mechanism sends the shuttle across the loom.”
Use it well: Picking here is a technical weaving term, not hand-selecting fibres.
38. shuttle race
Meaning: the track or path along which a loom shuttle travels. 中文:梭道 (suō dào).
Say it: “The shuttle race guides the shuttle from one side of the loom to the other.”
Use it well: Race describes the shuttle path. It should not be confused with the moving shuttle itself.
39. line shaft
Meaning: a long rotating shaft used to distribute mechanical power to multiple machines. 中文:总传动轴 (zǒng chuán dòng zhóu).
Say it: “A line shaft once powered several factory machines from one drive source.”
Use it well: Line-shaft systems distribute power mechanically through shafts and belts. They differ from individually motorised machines.
40. belt drive
Meaning: a power-transmission system using flexible belts between rotating pulleys. 中文:皮带传动 (pí dài chuán dòng).
Say it: “The belt drive transfers motion from the line shaft to the loom.”
Use it well: Belts transmit rotation; guards and safe clearances are essential in real machinery.
41. flywheel
Meaning: a heavy rotating wheel that stores rotational energy and smooths machine motion. 中文:飞轮 (fēi lún).
Say it: “The flywheel helps even out the engine’s power cycle.”
Use it well: A flywheel stores rotational energy. It is not the same as a drive pulley even when both rotate.
42. speed governor
Meaning: a mechanism that regulates machine or engine speed. 中文:调速器 (tiáo sù qì).
Say it: “The speed governor responds when the engine begins to run too fast.”
Use it well: A governor controls speed within a system; it does not generate the machine’s main power.
43. steam cylinder
Meaning: a cylinder in which steam pressure moves a piston. 中文:蒸汽缸 (zhēng qì gāng).
Say it: “Steam enters the cylinder and drives the piston through a stroke.”
Use it well: The cylinder converts steam pressure into motion within the engine. It is not the boiler where steam is generated.
44. boiler house
Meaning: a building or room containing boilers that generate steam or hot water. 中文:锅炉房 (guō lú fáng).
Say it: “The old boiler house once supplied steam power to the factory.”
Use it well: The boiler house produces steam or heat; the engine room uses that energy for mechanical work.
45. mill chimney
Meaning: a tall chimney serving an industrial mill or factory boiler system. 中文:工厂烟囱 (gōng chǎng yān cōng).
Say it: “The mill chimney remains visible above the former textile site.”
Use it well: A surviving chimney can mark industrial heritage even after the machinery it served has disappeared.
46. factory floor
Meaning: the main production area where industrial work takes place. 中文:工厂车间 (gōng chǎng chē jiān).
Say it: “Noise and movement once filled the factory floor.”
Use it well: Factory floor can mean the physical work area and, figuratively, production workers. Make the intended sense clear.
47. piecework
Meaning: a payment system based on the quantity of items or units produced. 中文:计件工资 (jì jiàn gōng zī).
Say it: “Some workers were paid through piecework rather than by fixed hourly wage.”
Use it well: Piecework is a labour-payment system. It does not describe the quality of the individual pieces produced.
48. shift system
Meaning: a work schedule dividing labour into different time periods or shifts. 中文:轮班制度 (lún bān zhì dù).
Say it: “The shift system allowed machinery to operate for longer hours.”
Use it well: A shift system organises time and labour. Historical hours and conditions should be supported by the museum or documentary sources.
49. industrial espionage
Meaning: the secret acquisition of industrial knowledge, designs or processes from a competitor. 中文:工业间谍活动 (gōng yè jiàn dié huó dòng).
Say it: “The museum story includes episodes of industrial espionage linked to machinery transfer.”
Use it well: Use the term only when secrecy and unauthorised knowledge transfer are documented; ordinary imitation is not automatically espionage.
50. machine guarding
Meaning: protective barriers or systems that separate people from dangerous moving machine parts. 中文:机器防护 (jī qì fáng hù).
Say it: “Modern demonstrations use machine guarding around dangerous mechanisms.”
Use it well: Guarding is a safety system. Historical machines may have operated with very different standards, so never approach moving exhibits beyond visitor barriers.

Meaning: a building associated with a craft or merchant guild. 中文:行会会馆 (háng huì huì guǎn).
Say it: “The waterfront guild house reflects the commercial importance of medieval Ghent.”
Use it well: Guild house describes institutional association, not necessarily the private home of one craftsperson.
52. stepped gable
Meaning: a gable whose outline rises in a series of step-like levels. 中文:阶梯山墙 (jiē tī shān qiáng).
Say it: “A stepped gable gives the façade a distinctive northern European silhouette.”
Use it well: The stepped outline is a façade form. It does not alone establish the exact building date.
53. corbel arch
Meaning: an opening formed by successive projecting courses that meet toward the top. 中文:叠涩拱 (dié sè gǒng).
Say it: “A corbel arch is built by overlapping masonry rather than by true radial voussoirs.”
Use it well: Corbelled and true arches work differently structurally. Use the term only when the construction form is visible or documented.
54. sandstone coping
Meaning: a protective top course of sandstone placed on a wall or parapet. 中文:砂岩压顶 (shā yán yā dǐng).
Say it: “The sandstone coping sheds water away from the wall below.”
Use it well: Coping protects an exposed wall top. It is different from decorative stone cladding across an entire façade.
55. gatehouse
Meaning: a fortified or controlled building around an entrance gate. 中文:门楼 (mén lóu).
Say it: “The castle gatehouse controls the approach to the inner complex.”
Use it well: Gatehouse is an entrance structure, not the whole castle or keep.
56. keep tower
Meaning: the principal fortified tower or stronghold within a castle. 中文:主堡塔 (zhǔ bǎo tǎ).
Say it: “The keep tower rises above the surrounding walls.”
Use it well: Keep refers to the main fortified core. The term should follow the site’s historical interpretation because castle plans vary.
57. draw well
Meaning: a well from which water is drawn upward using a bucket or lifting mechanism. 中文:提水井 (tí shuǐ jǐng).
Say it: “The castle draw well provided access to water inside the defended area.”
Use it well: A well is a water source. It should not be confused with a drawbridge merely because both use the word draw.
58. arrow loop
Meaning: a narrow opening in a fortified wall designed for shooting arrows while offering protection. 中文:箭孔 (jiàn kǒng).
Say it: “The arrow loop is narrow outside and widens toward the interior.”
Use it well: Arrow loops are defensive openings. Not every narrow slit in an old wall had the same military function.
59. murder hole
Meaning: an opening in a gate passage or ceiling used to attack intruders from above. 中文:防御投射孔 (fáng yù tóu shè kǒng).
Say it: “The interpretation panel explains the defensive role of the so-called murder hole.”
Use it well: The dramatic English term is conventional but should be tied to documented defensive function, not every hole in a gatehouse ceiling.
60. civic charter
Meaning: a formal document granting or confirming rights and privileges to a town or civic body. 中文:城市特许状 (chéng shì tè xǔ zhuàng).
Say it: “The civic charter helped define rights within the medieval city.”
Use it well: A charter records legal status or privileges. It is not the same as a later historical narrative about those rights.
61. market privilege
Meaning: a legally granted right to hold or regulate a market. 中文:市场特权 (shì chǎng tè quán).
Say it: “The town’s market privilege supported regular trade activity.”
Use it well: Privilege is a legal right in a historical system, not simply an advantage enjoyed informally.
62. toll house
Meaning: a building where tolls or duties were collected from travellers or goods. 中文:收费所 (shōu fèi suǒ).
Say it: “The toll house stood near a controlled route into the trading area.”
Use it well: The function should be supported by historical evidence. A small gate building is not automatically a toll house.
63. canal basin
Meaning: a widened canal area used for turning, mooring or loading boats. 中文:运河港池 (yùn hé gǎng chí).
Say it: “The canal basin gives boats more room than the narrow channel.”
Use it well: Basin describes the widened water area. It is different from a lock chamber or ordinary river bend.
64. mooring ring
Meaning: a fixed metal ring used to secure a boat with a rope or line. 中文:系船环 (xì chuán huán).
Say it: “Old mooring rings remain set into the stone quay.”
Use it well: A mooring ring is hardware for securing boats. Its age or original use should not be inferred from rust alone.
65. towpath
Meaning: a path beside a canal once used by people or animals towing boats. 中文:纤道 (qiàn dào).
Say it: “The former towpath is now part of a waterside walking route.”
Use it well: Towpath describes historical function; modern use may be walking, cycling or mixed access.
66. boat landing
Meaning: a place where passengers board or leave a small boat. 中文:船只登岸点 (chuán zhī dēng àn diǎn).
Say it: “The guided canal trip departs from a nearby boat landing.”
Use it well: Landing describes a boarding place. It is not necessarily a full pier, terminal or ferry station.
67. low-clearance bridge
Meaning: a bridge with limited vertical space for vessels passing underneath. 中文:低净空桥 (dī jìng kōng qiáo).
Say it: “The canal boat lowers its canopy before the low-clearance bridge.”
Use it well: Visitors should follow the operator’s instructions; bridge clearance is an operational navigation issue.
68. swing span
Meaning: a bridge span that rotates horizontally to open a navigation channel. 中文:旋转桥跨 (xuán zhuǎn qiáo kuà).
Say it: “The swing span turns aside so taller vessels can pass.”
Use it well: Swing describes the opening mechanism. It differs from a bascule bridge that lifts vertically.
69. stone quay
Meaning: a stone-built waterfront edge used for access, loading or mooring. 中文:石砌码头岸壁 (shí qì mǎ tóu àn bì).
Say it: “The stone quay creates a firm edge beside the canal.”
Use it well: Quay describes the working waterfront edge. It is different from a natural riverbank.

Say it: “The warehouse conversion keeps the old structure while introducing new uses.”
Use it well: Conversion changes use. It is different from demolition and complete reconstruction.
72. brownfield regeneration
Meaning: the redevelopment of previously used or industrial land. 中文:棕地再生 (zōng dì zài shēng).
Say it: “Brownfield regeneration can combine cleanup, new buildings and public space.”
Use it well: Brownfield describes previously developed land; regeneration is a broader process than one building renovation.
73. industrial archaeology
Meaning: the study of material remains from industrial production and infrastructure. 中文:工业考古 (gōng yè kǎo gǔ).
Say it: “Industrial archaeology uses machinery, buildings and documents to reconstruct working life.”
Use it well: It studies industrial material culture. It is not limited to ancient history or underground excavation.
74. canal-side terrace
Meaning: an outdoor terrace or seating area beside a canal. 中文:运河边露台 (yùn hé biān lù tái).
Say it: “We found a canal-side terrace for a quiet afternoon break.”
Use it well: Terrace describes the outdoor seating or platform. It does not imply the space is public or free to use.
75. bicycle street
Meaning: a street designed or regulated to prioritise bicycle movement. 中文:自行车优先街道 (zì xíng chē yōu xiān jiē dào).
Say it: “The route enters a bicycle street near the historic centre.”
Use it well: Traffic rules vary by jurisdiction. Follow current signs rather than applying a generic cycling rule.

What to visit and understand in Ghent
The Ghent Altarpiece: begin with structure before symbolism
Official Ghent visitor material describes the Van Eyck brothers’ Altarpiece as an eighteen-panel work completed in 1432 and now experienced through both the cathedral and its visitor centre. The easiest mistake is to jump directly into interpretation without first understanding what physically opens, closes and moves. Polyptych, hinged wing, closed view, open view, upper register and lower register give you a map before you discuss meaning.
Once the structure is clear, add represented objects and figures: a sacred lamb, donor portrait, prophet scroll, sibyl figure, angel choir. Then add technique cautiously: grisaille can imitate sculpture; brocade imitation can imitate precious fabric; frame polychromy can integrate the framing architecture. The word imitation here describes artistic technique, not dishonesty.

Restoration in public: the artwork has a present tense
The Altarpiece is not only historical; its conservation is happening now. Official Ghent information notes that the upper register of the inner panels is being restored and that visitors can see restorers at work at MSK on specified days. This makes live restoration, viewing glass, time-slot ticket and advance booking real travel words rather than abstract museum vocabulary.
It also gives you a writing discipline. “The upper register is under restoration” is a current programme fact. “The painting originally looked exactly like this restored section” would be a larger interpretive claim. Keep current treatment, historical original and present display arrangement separate.
Museum of Industry: follow cotton through the machines
Ghent’s Museum of Industry occupies a former cotton mill and keeps textile machinery at the centre of the story. The official museum describes spinning machines, looms and sewing machines as part of its permanent textile exhibition, including the Mule Jenny as a major showpiece. Start with process: card fibres, draw sliver, make roving, spin yarn, prepare warp, weave cloth. Then add machine-specific words.
A carding engine prepares fibres. A drawing frame evens them. A roving frame creates an intermediate strand. A spinning mule or ring spinner makes yarn. The warp beam, heddle frame, shuttle race and loom reed belong to weaving. When you can place the machine in the process, the museum stops being a room full of mysterious iron.

Labour and power: a machine changes the factory around it
A machine does not operate alone. Steam can move a piston in a steam cylinder; a flywheel smooths motion; a line shaft distributes rotation; a belt drive transfers power to individual machines. The factory floor then becomes a social system organised by shift system, piecework, supervision and safety practices.
This is where industrial history becomes human. “The self-acting mule automated more of the machine cycle” is technical. “Automation removed all labour” would be false. Workers still set up, monitored, repaired, cleaned and handled materials. Vocabulary should reveal the redistribution of work, not erase workers from the story.
Gravensteen and civic Ghent: defence, rights and trade
The Castle of the Counts gives you defensive vocabulary—gatehouse, keep tower, arrow loop, draw well. The medieval commercial city gives you legal and institutional words—guild house, civic charter, market privilege, toll house. They belong to different systems: one protects and controls space; the other structures rights, trade and civic organisation.
A dramatic castle feature invites overconfident storytelling. Use the interpretation panel before assigning a defensive function to every hole or stair. Likewise, an ornate waterfront façade may belong to a guild, merchant or later reconstruction history that deserves actual sourcing.

Ghent from the water: the canal is a transport system and a viewing system
Boat trips through Ghent make the city’s waterside vocabulary easy to use. A stone quay creates a working edge. A mooring ring secures a boat. A boat landing handles passengers. A low-clearance bridge constrains vessel height. A former towpath can become a modern pedestrian or cycling route. One canal can therefore carry traces of several transport eras.
Official Visit Gent information notes that traditional boat trips operate daily and that some operators assist wheelchair users with boarding when contacted appropriately. That is a useful reminder: wheelchair route inside a museum and accessible boarding on a boat are separate questions. Accessibility is a chain, not one yes/no label.
Visit Gent: boat trips in Ghent.
Ghent food culture: local dishes and the city’s vegetarian identity
Ghent’s official tourism site highlights both traditional food and its unusually strong vegan/vegetarian scene, including the city’s “Thursday Veggie Day” initiative. That makes waterzooi, stoverij and cuberdon sit alongside plant protein, seitan, tempeh and Vegetarian Thursday. The city’s food story is not one cuisine replacing another; it is layers of tradition and adaptation.
For ordering, keep the cultural name and ask the practical question. “Is today’s waterzooi chicken or fish?” “Does the stoverij sauce contain beer?” “Is this seitan dish prepared separately from meat?” The dish name gives identity; the current kitchen gives ingredients and preparation.

Make Ghent vocabulary part of your own English
Learn the map before the detail
For the Altarpiece, start with polyptych → hinged wing → open view/closed view → upper/lower register. Only then add figures and symbols. For the textile factory, start with carding → drawing → roving → spinning → weaving. For the city, start with castle → market rights → canal → warehouse → conversion. A map makes detailed vocabulary easier because every new word already has a place to land.
The Fencing Method: let each added phrase answer a new question
Start with “The machine spins yarn.” Improve it: “The spinning mule draws and twists roving into finer yarn.” Add power: “A line-shaft system can distribute mechanical power to factory machinery.” Add history: “The museum uses the machine to explain changing labour and production.” The sentence grows because each phrase adds mechanism, energy or context.
Try the Altarpiece: “The figure is painted in grisaille.” Add effect: “The grisaille makes the figure resemble sculpture.” Add location: “It appears in the closed view.” Add evidence: “The visitor-centre interpretation identifies the figure and its role.” You have moved from technique to illusion to structure to meaning.
A 90-minute three-person lesson
Spend ten minutes choosing one system; fifteen minutes arranging ten words into a process or spatial map; twenty minutes rotating visitor, explainer and checker roles; ten minutes taking a break; twenty minutes solving a changed scenario; ten minutes repairing unsupported claims; and five minutes setting a later retrieval task. The checker’s question is simple: “Which word tells me the object, which tells me the process, and which tells me the interpretation?”
Write a Ghent paragraph using three time layers
Past: “The factory once used steam and line shafts to power machinery.” Present: “The Museum of Industry now interprets that machinery for visitors.” Ongoing: “The Ghent Altarpiece continues to undergo restoration, with selected panels and work visible according to the current programme.” Travel writing becomes stronger when dates and ongoing processes are not flattened into one timeless description.
Review with category switches
Take one word and deliberately move it into the wrong system, then repair it. Predella is not a loom part. Warp beam is not a castle feature. Civic charter is not a food label. Vegetarian Thursday is not an art technique. The exercise trains category boundaries and makes the city-specific bank genuinely distinct.
Use Ghent vocabulary to trace layers, processes and access
Ghent’s four banks share a hidden method: trace what changes when something opens, moves, is powered, is reused or is interpreted. A hinged panel changes a composition. A line shaft transfers motion. A warehouse conversion changes use. An AR layer changes what a visitor can see without altering the original object. Vocabulary becomes a model of transformation.
Worked example 1: open view is not “more complete” than closed view
The open and closed states of a polyptych are both designed compositions. The closed view is not merely the artwork hiding its “real” picture. It presents donor portraits, grisaille figures and annunciatory imagery in its own arrangement. The open view reveals another programme. A more accurate sentence is: “Opening the wings changes which visual programme is presented.”
This matters for current viewing too. If restoration or display practice means some panels are temporarily elsewhere, your visit is one moment in the object’s long history. Use current visitor information rather than assuming every photograph online matches today’s arrangement.
Worked example 2: a textile machine is a chain of functions
The easiest way to understand a factory is to ask what enters a machine and what leaves it. Loose fibre enters the carding engine; a more ordered fibre web or sliver leaves. Sliver enters a drawing frame; a more even strand leaves. Roving enters a spinning mule or another spinner; yarn leaves. Prepared warp and weft enter a loom; cloth leaves.
Now connect power: steam may move a piston, the engine turns a flywheel, a line shaft carries rotation, belts transmit power to machines. Then connect labour: workers load, monitor, join broken threads, move materials, clean, maintain and inspect. Mechanisation changes the work; it does not remove the system of human tasks.
Worked example 3: industrial archaeology reads absence as well as survival
Imagine a former mill converted to housing. The machinery may be gone, yet a mill chimney, large windows, floor loading patterns or a canal-side service edge can survive. Industrial archaeology reads buildings, infrastructure, objects and documents together. A warehouse conversion tells you the use changed; brownfield regeneration tells you a larger previously developed area may be transforming.
This is also an evidence lesson: an old-looking brick building is not automatically a factory, and a converted warehouse does not preserve every historical feature. State what survives and what the source identifies.
Worked example 4: accessibility is a route made of links
A venue can be described as wheelchair accessible while still requiring you to plan the exact route. A wheelchair route may use a different entrance or lift. AR glasses may not suit every visitor, so a tablet alternative matters. A time-slot ticket controls timing. Advance booking affects availability. These are four different access dimensions.
For a canal boat, accessibility changes again: boarding assistance, gangway angle, seating and operator arrangements matter. One city-wide label cannot answer every step. Good travel English asks about the chain.
Worked example 5: food identity, ingredient safety and civic policy
Waterzooi and stoverij are dish identities. Seitan and tempeh are ingredients or protein foods. Vegetarian Thursday is a civic initiative. A dish can be vegetarian without using either seitan or tempeh. A restaurant can participate in plant-based culture without serving a traditional Ghent dish. Keep cuisine, ingredient and policy separate.
For allergy safety, the useful questions are specific: wheat/gluten in seitan, shellfish in shrimp croquettes, dairy in creamy waterzooi, alcohol or beer in some stew sauces. Cultural familiarity never replaces the current kitchen’s ingredient information.
Worked example 6: three kinds of “view”
Ghent gives you at least three meanings of view. The open view and closed view are states of the Altarpiece. A canal boat gives a physical city view from water level. Viewing glass is a protective barrier through which you observe conservation work. Same ordinary word family, three different systems. Context makes the meaning.
Repair the exact mistake
Altarpiece mistake: “Closed view means the artwork is unavailable.” Repair: closed view is a designed composition. Industry mistake: “The line shaft makes steam.” Repair: the boiler/engine system provides power; the shaft distributes rotation. City mistake: “Every old warehouse is industrial archaeology.” Repair: archaeology is the study of material evidence, not the building type itself. Food mistake: “Vegetarian Thursday means every restaurant is vegetarian.” Repair: it is a civic initiative encouraging meat-free choices.
Try before opening the suggested responses
A. Explain open view versus lower register.
B. Explain carding engine versus spinning mule.
C. Explain guild house versus toll house.
D. Explain warehouse conversion versus brownfield regeneration.
E. Explain AR glasses versus tablet alternative.
Suggested responses and what to check
A: Open view describes the whole display state with the wings opened; lower register describes one horizontal tier within the composition.
B: A carding engine disentangles and aligns fibres; a spinning mule draws and twists prepared fibre into yarn.
C: A guild house is associated with a craft or merchant organisation; a toll house is associated with collecting duties or tolls.
D: Warehouse conversion changes the use of one warehouse; brownfield regeneration can transform a larger previously developed area.
E: AR glasses are a wearable interpretation device; the tablet alternative provides similar or related digital content without requiring the wearable glasses.
Leave with a Ghent systems paragraph
Try this: “The polyptych changes meaning as its wings open and close. The spinning mule changes fibre into yarn within a larger factory system. A warehouse conversion changes an industrial building’s use. Augmented reality changes the visitor’s information layer without changing the cathedral itself. Ghent is full of transformations—and each kind needs its own vocabulary.”

Frequently asked questions about Ghent vocabulary
Are these 100 words distinct from Antwerp and Rotterdam?
Yes. The numbered bank was collision-checked against the repaired EU branch plus both newly published cities. Ghent owns this Altarpiece, textile-industry, civic/canal and visitor-access set.
Can I see the Altarpiece in both open and closed views?
Official visitor information says both open and closed panels can be admired during the first and last time slot. Current restoration can affect what is on display, so confirm the live booking page.
Can I see restoration work in October 2026?
Official Ghent information states that the upper register restoration is visible live at MSK from Tuesdays to Fridays, with panels arranged for public viewing on weekends and holidays. Recheck the schedule before travelling.
What if I cannot wear the AR glasses?
The visitor centre states that a tablet alternative is available for people who cannot wear the AR glasses.
Is the visitor centre wheelchair accessible?
Official Visit Gent information describes the cathedral, new visitor centre and Ghent Altarpiece as fully wheelchair accessible. For a specific route or mobility requirement, confirm current lift and access details.
Is Vegetarian Thursday a rule for all restaurants?
No. It is a Ghent initiative encouraging meat-free eating, not a compulsory rule for every restaurant or resident.
Why include textile machinery in a travel vocabulary guide?
Because Ghent’s Museum of Industry makes the city’s industrial past tangible. Learning machine roles turns a room of unfamiliar equipment into an understandable production system.

Cambridge Dictionary: English pronunciation and usage
Ghent is a city of things that open, spin, flow, convert and reappear. A painted wing opens. A spindle spins. A canal carries. A warehouse changes use. A digital layer changes what the visitor can understand. Follow the transformation, and the vocabulary becomes a story rather than a list.
