Top 100 vocabulary for visiting and touring Johor Bahru
Choose ten words for a task you actually want to discuss. Read the example, then change the quantity or question. Native English speakers learning Chinese can try the translation before checking its Pinyin. Table scenarios are fictional practice: their quantities, times, prices and services do not describe actual Johor Bahru offers or facilities. A useful language lesson begins by knowing what a number refers to.

Johor Bahru history and important visiting notes
Read the city’s dates as separate events
Johor’s official royal history dates the foundation of Iskandar Puteri at Tanjong Puteri to 1855 and its renaming as Johor Bahru to 1866. The city council’s background records city status on 1 January 1994. These dates identify different changes. When writing a history sentence, say whether you mean the settlement’s foundation, its name or its later municipal status. Read the royal historical account; check the city council’s chronology.
中文:柔佛官方王室历史记载,1855年在Tanjong Puteri建立Iskandar Puteri,1866年改名Johor Bahru。市政厅背景资料另记载1994年1月1日取得城市地位。这些日期代表不同变化;写作时应说明是聚落建立、改名,还是后来的市政地位。
Explore the Chinese Heritage Museum’s community story
The official Visit Johor listing places the Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum at 42 Jalan Ibrahim and describes its focus on the Chinese community’s roots and contributions. It offers a meaningful place to connect language learning with local stories. Choose one object or account to discuss instead of treating every display as a number to complete. Explore the official museum introduction.
中文:Visit Johor官方资料列出新山华族历史文物馆位于Jalan Ibrahim 42号,主题涉及华人社群的根源与贡献。可把语言学习与当地故事联系起来,选一个物件或记述讨论,不必把每件展品当作必须完成的数量。
Approach Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque respectfully
The tourism listing places Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque on a hill overlooking the Straits of Johor and highlights its Victorian and Moorish architectural influences. A religious site calls for respectful attention. Ask the actual venue about visitor access, appropriate clothing and photography before planning an interior visit. A tourism listing is not blanket permission to enter every space. Read the official destination introduction.
中文:旅游资料介绍苏丹阿布峇卡清真寺位于俯瞰柔佛海峡的山丘,并指出维多利亚与摩尔式建筑影响。宗教场所需要尊重;安排进入前,应向场所确认游客开放、衣着与摄影要求。旅游介绍不等于可以进入每个区域。
Distinguish the palace building from its museum role
The official tourism account locates the Royal Abu Bakar Museum in Istana Besar, the Grand Palace, and dates the building’s completion to 1866. It describes a later conversion to a museum setting around 1990. Do not turn the palace’s construction date into a claim that the museum opened in 1866. Confirm current access before including it as a stop. Read the palace and museum introduction.
中文:官方旅游资料说明阿布峇卡皇家博物馆位于Istana Besar大皇宫,并记载建筑于1866年完成,后来约于1990年转为博物馆展示用途。不能把皇宫建成日期当作博物馆于1866年开放的证据;安排参观前应确认当前开放条件。
Consider a manageable outdoor pause
The city council’s destination page describes Hutan Bandar on Jalan Tasek Utara as a family recreation park and dates its public opening to 1987. Use the official information to investigate an outdoor addition to the day, then confirm the facilities and conditions you need. Fewer stops can leave more room for questions, a rest and a relaxed conversation. Explore the council’s destination page.
中文:市政厅景点页面把Jalan Tasek Utara的Hutan Bandar介绍为家庭休闲公园,并记载1987年向公众开放。可据官方资料考虑户外休息站,再确认所需设施与实际条件。少安排几站,反而能留出提问、休息和轻松交流的空间。
Check exact names and current arrangements
Johor is the state; Johor Bahru is a city within it. The official tourism directory also separates destinations such as Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Muar. Check the exact address of each place rather than assuming a Johor attraction is in central Johor Bahru. For bookings or purchases, ask what a quoted quantity includes and confirm the currency, unit and conditions shown by the provider. Use the official Johor tourism directory.
中文:柔佛是州,新山是其中的城市。官方旅游目录也分别列出古来、哥打丁宜和麻坡等目的地。应核对具体地址,不能认为柔佛所有景点都在新山市中心。预约或购物时,询问所列数量包含什么,并核对服务方标示的币种、单位与条件。
Six English–Chinese travel conversations
These fictional exchanges practise clear questions. They do not record actual offers, venue promises, prices or visitor arrangements.

Checking a number you heard
Visitor: Did you say thirteen or thirty? / Helper: Thirteen: one, three. Please check the written number too.
中文:游客:您说的是十三还是三十?/协助者:十三,一、三。也请核对写下的数字。
Choosing a relaxed plan
Traveller: Could we choose fewer stops? / Companion: Yes. That would leave more time for the museum.
中文:旅客:可以少选几个停留点吗?/同伴:可以,这样博物馆就能多留一点时间。
Asking about a portion
Customer: What does one portion include? / Server: Let us check the description before you decide how many to order.
中文:顾客:一份包含什么?/服务人员:我们先看说明,再决定点多少份。
Checking a calculation
Customer: Could you explain the calculation for these two items? / Helper: Let us check each amount and any additional charge shown.
中文:顾客:可以解释这两件商品怎样计算吗?/协助者:我们核对每项金额及列出的额外费用。
Confirming a meeting plan
Traveller: Have we left enough time to return? / Companion: Let us check the route rather than rely on an approximate guess.
中文:旅客:回程时间留够了吗?/同伴:我们核对路线,不只凭大概猜测。
Meaning differences worth noticing
Thirteen and thirty need a deliberate check
In these pronunciation guides, the teen ending receives stress in thirteen, while the first syllable is stressed in thirty. Context can change natural emphasis. When a quantity matters, ask for the written number or repeat its digits: “one, three” and “three, zero”. Forty is spelled without a u.
中文:本表thirteen把重读放在teen结尾,thirty重读首音节;实际语境会影响强调方式。数量重要时,可核对书面数字,或逐位复述“一、三”与“三、零”。Forty拼写没有u。
Two, 二 and 两
English two can correspond to 二 or 两. Chinese commonly uses 两 before a measure word when counting things, such as 两个人, while 二 appears in numbers such as 二十. The table shows both because translating a number requires the surrounding phrase.
中文:Two可对应二或两。中文计数时,量词前常用“两”,如“两个人”;“二”则用于“二十”等数词。表中并列两者,提醒你结合完整表达翻译。
A million is not a 万, and a billion is not an 亿
One million is 1,000,000, or 一百万. One billion is 1,000,000,000, or 十亿. Chinese commonly groups large numbers around 万 and 亿; English uses thousand, million and billion. Write the digits before translating a large quantity.
中文:一百万是1,000,000;英语one billion是1,000,000,000,即十亿。中文常按万与亿分组,英语常按thousand、million和billion表达。翻译大数前,先写出数字。
Fewer, less, few and little
Use fewer with countable things, as in fewer stops, and less with uncountable amounts, as in less time. Few and little often suggest a shortage; a few and a little emphasise that some is available. Chinese translations need that context rather than one fixed equivalent.
中文:Fewer通常配可数事物,如较少停留点;less通常配不可数量,如较少时间。Few与little常暗示不足,a few与a little则强调仍有一些。中文应根据语境翻译。
A number, a digit and a numeral
A number is a numerical value or count. A digit is one symbol from 0 to 9 in decimal notation. A numeral is the written representation: 12 is a numeral containing two digits. Chinese 数、数字 and 数字符号 can overlap in everyday use, so explain the distinction when teaching it.
中文:Number指数值或数目,digit在十进制记法中指0至9的单个符号,numeral指写下的表示形式:12由两个数字构成。中文“数”“数字”“数字符号”的日常用法有重叠,教学时应说明区别。
The same word can do a different job
Product means the result of multiplication here, though it can also mean goods for sale. Average means arithmetic mean here; other uses are broader. Quarter means one fourth, not a city district. Twice in row 89 means two occasions; “twice as much” instead compares quantities.
中文:本表product指乘积,也可在其他场景指商品。Average在此指算术平均数;其他用法更广。Quarter在此指四分之一,不是城区。第89词twice指两次;twice as much则比较数量。

A short Johor Bahru writing model
Fictional learning model: this passage demonstrates language choices, not an actual itinerary or a promise of visitor access.
Our group of four planned a gentle Johor Bahru morning. We chose one museum stop rather than several hurried visits and checked the current arrangements before leaving. At the Chinese Heritage Museum, each of us prepared a question about a community story. Later, we read that the settlement was founded in 1855 and renamed Johor Bahru in 1866. Those dates described different events, which made our history notes clearer. During a fictional shopping exercise, I asked whether a quantity was thirteen or thirty and checked the written digits. We compared the amounts before deciding what to share. By the end, our notebook contained more than numbers: it showed how careful questions helped us understand the day.
Your turn: count, compare and explain
Write 100–150 words using eight headwords. Include a group size, a comparison, a confirmation question and one sourced Johor Bahru history detail. Translate it into Chinese, checking 二 or 两 and any large-number grouping. For speaking practice, one partner reads a quantity and the other confirms its digits and what it refers to.
中文:用八个词写100至150词,加入同行人数、一次比较、一个确认问题和一项有来源的新山历史细节。翻译成中文后,核对二或两及大数分组。口语练习时,一人读数量,另一人确认数字及其所指。
- Shared cards: divide twelve cards among three people. Each receives four. Explain the calculation in a sentence.
- Remaining cards: subtract three from ten. Seven remain. State what the numbers represent.
- Part of a group: a quarter of twenty is five. Explain the whole before naming its quarter.
These are learning examples, not actual prices or venue offers. Clear language helps you check a calculation before trusting it.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a travel guide teach numbers?
Numbers help you confirm group sizes, quantities, order and approximate time. They also help you avoid misunderstanding a spoken amount.
Can native English speakers practise Chinese here?
Yes. Try the Chinese quantity expression, then check the Pinyin and surrounding grammar. Pay attention to 二 and 两 and to 万 and 亿.
Does this list give actual Johor Bahru prices?
No. The examples teach language and calculations. Check the provider’s current written offer, currency and conditions.
Do the historical dates all describe the city’s founding?
No. The notes distinguish foundation in 1855, renaming in 1866 and city status in 1994. A date needs an event label.
Does an attraction listing guarantee entry today?
Check the actual venue’s current arrangements. The historical or destination description does not establish access for a particular day or visitor.
How should I start with all 100 words?
Choose ten for a real task: counting companions, comparing plans or checking an order. Use them in a short conversation before adding more.
