Three secondary students review open books and notes together in a classroom.

Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring Korea | Hampyeong

Welcome to Hampyeong! Hampyeong County offers a lively setting for learning about butterflies. The useful language reaches far beyond the word butterfly itself—from antennae, wing scales and caterpillar instars to host plants, monitoring transects, live exhibits and festival programmes. These 100 English words and expressions are built around that full life-cycle-and-ecology system, with simplified Chinese meanings and bilingual examples.

The 28th Hampyeong Butterfly Festival was held from April 24 to May 5, 2026 at Hampyeong Expo Park under the theme “Dreaming Butterflies, A Journey Begins.” VISITKOREA lists butterfly releases, feeding experiences, performances, parades and flower displays among the programme.

How to use this guide / 使用说明: Pronunciation cues are approximate rather than IPA. Observe butterflies gently: do not handle wild individuals unless an authorized activity specifically permits it. Ecology terms here are for learning and responsible observation.

Your destination / 目的地: Hampyeong — 咸平 — 함평. Save the Korean festival name and Hampyeong Expo Park before travelling.

Why Hampyeong makes these words useful / 为什么咸平适合学习这些词

Hampyeong is useful because visitors can see several stages and scales of butterfly biology in one trip. A magnified exhibit explains anatomy; pupal displays explain metamorphosis; a butterfly house reveals adult behaviour; gardens reveal host and nectar plants; and festival activities turn the science into an accessible public experience.

Use these words to connect butterfly anatomy with life cycles, identification and monitoring. For a different angle on living landscapes, compare the Suncheon and Goyang guides.

Observation questions to ask / 观察蝴蝶时可以问什么

Ask whether you are seeing a nectar plant or a larval host plant. Adult food and caterpillar food are not always the same.

When identifying a butterfly, compare both dorsal and ventral wing surfaces if the insect naturally shows them. Wing patterns can look very different above and below.

At a pupal display, look for stage rather than trying to predict an exact emergence time. Development depends on species and conditions.

If you join a citizen-science activity, record date, location and weather as carefully as the species name.

A short conversation / 简短对话

Visitor: Is this plant food for the adult butterfly or for the caterpillar? / 游客:这种植物是成蝶吃的,还是毛毛虫吃的?

Guide: This one is a larval host plant. The adult uses different flowers for nectar. / 向导:这是幼虫寄主植物,成蝶会到其他花上吸食花蜜。

Visitor: Why is the underside of the wing so different? / 游客:为什么翅膀下面看起来差别这么大?

Guide: The ventral wing pattern can help with camouflage and identification. / 向导:翅腹面的纹样既可能帮助伪装,也有助于识别。

Turn the visit into a paragraph / 把旅行写成一段话

Model paragraph — an imagined visit: In Hampyeong, I stopped thinking of a butterfly as one finished animal. The exhibit began with a tiny egg, moved through caterpillar instars and a chrysalis, then ended with wing expansion after eclosion. In the garden, another system appeared: larval host plants supported caterpillars while nectar plants fed adults. The vocabulary made the life cycle feel connected rather than separate.

中文参考: 在咸平,我不再把蝴蝶只看成一个已经完成的成虫。展览从小小的卵开始,经过不同幼虫龄期和蝶蛹,最后来到羽化后的翅膀展开。到了花园,又出现另一套系统:幼虫寄主植物养活毛毛虫,而蜜源植物给成蝶提供花蜜。词汇让整个生命周期变得连贯,而不是几个分开的阶段。

Learn, compare and use the words / 学习与练习

Compare carefully: Forewing and hindwing are anatomical structures; wing pattern is a visible design; wing scale is a microscopic surface feature. A caterpillar is the larval stage; a chrysalis is the pupal stage.

Build precision: Replace “The butterfly was colourful” with “The ventral wing surface had a brown cryptic pattern, while the dorsal surface carried bright eyespots.” Continue that observation habit with The Fencing Method for Vocabulary.

Recall tomorrow: Draw the four main stages—egg, larva, pupa and adult—and attach at least five vocabulary terms to each stage or its ecology.

Questions before you go / 出发前的小问题

When was the 2026 Hampyeong Butterfly Festival?

VISITKOREA lists the 2026 event from April 24 to May 5 at Hampyeong Expo Park.

Is every flowering plant a butterfly host plant?

No. Adult butterflies may visit many nectar flowers, while caterpillars can depend on specific larval host plants.

Should visitors catch wild butterflies for identification?

No. Observe and photograph responsibly unless an authorized scientific or educational programme specifically directs otherwise.
