Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring Korea | Sunchang

Top 100 Vocabulary for Visiting and Touring Korea | Sunchang

Welcome to Sunchang! Gochujang is not simply ‘red sauce’: it is a system of chili, grain, soybean material, malt enzymes, salt, earthenware jars, microorganisms, maturation, tasting and culinary use. These 100 English words and expressions follow that system from ingredients to festival culture, with simplified Chinese meanings and bilingual examples.

VISITKOREA describes Sunchang Gochujang Village as a centre of traditional gochujang craft where visitors can join hands-on food experiences. The 2026 Sunchang Jangryu Festival is scheduled for October 15–18 around Gochujang Village and the Fermentation Theme Park, with food, exhibitions, performances and fermentation-learning programmes.

Food-safety note / 食品安全说明: This is a language-and-culture guide, not a home-fermentation safety manual. Fermentation requires suitable hygiene, salt, temperature and process control; follow a verified recipe or supervised programme rather than improvising.

Why Sunchang makes these words useful / 为什么顺昌适合学习这些词

Sunchang is useful because one familiar condiment can be unpacked into an entire food system. Grain supplies starch, malt enzymes help create sugars, soybean material contributes protein and savoury compounds, chili supplies colour and heat, salt shapes the fermentation environment, and time allows the flavours to mature.

The jar landscape adds another layer. Onggi, jangdokdae, sunlight, temperature change and careful handling turn food vocabulary into material culture. The Fermentation Theme Park then adds the scientific language of microbes and enzymes.

Questions to ask in the village / 在民俗村可以问什么

Ask which grain and soybean ingredients are used in the specific gochujang you are tasting. Traditional recipes can differ.

Ask how long the paste was matured and whether the producer uses traditional onggi or another vessel.

During a workshop, distinguish mixing from fermentation. The hands-on activity may demonstrate part of the process rather than reproduce months of maturation.

At the Fermentation Theme Park, connect a sensory word such as aroma or sweetness with a mechanism such as starch conversion, protein breakdown or microbial activity.

A short conversation / 简短对话

Visitor: Is this gochujang made with rice or barley? / 游客:这款辣椒酱是用米还是大麦做的?

Producer: This batch uses rice. The grain affects sweetness, texture and the fermentation process. / 生产者:这一批用米。谷物会影响甜味、质地和发酵过程。

Visitor: How long was it matured? / 游客:它熟成了多久?

Producer: Please check the batch label; the maturation period differs between products. / 生产者:请看批次标签,不同产品的熟成期不同。

Turn the visit into a paragraph / 把旅行写成一段话

Model paragraph — an imagined visit: In Sunchang, I stopped treating gochujang as one flavour. The workshop separated the ingredients first: chili powder, rice, fermented soybean material, malt and salt. Then the fermentation exhibit explained how starch conversion and microbial activity change the paste over time. Outside, rows of onggi jars made the science visible as material culture. By the tasting table, sweetness, heat, aroma and fermented depth finally had precise names.

中文参考: 在顺昌,我不再把辣椒酱看成一种单一味道。体验课先把配料分开:辣椒粉、米、发酵大豆材料、麦芽和盐。接着,发酵展览解释淀粉转化和微生物活动如何随时间改变酱料。户外一排排韩式陶缸又把科学变成可见的物质文化。到了品鉴桌,甜味、辣感、香气和发酵层次终于都有了准确名称。

Learn, compare and use the words / 学习与练习

Compare carefully: Gochugaru is chili powder; gochujang is a fermented paste. Saccharification breaks starch toward sugars; proteolytic activity breaks proteins into smaller components. Onggi is the jar; jangdokdae is the platform or area where jars are kept.

Build precision: Replace “The sauce tasted strong” with “The aged gochujang had a thick viscosity, lingering heat and deep fermented savour.” Continue that evidence habit with The Fencing Method for Vocabulary.

Recall tomorrow: Draw the chain from grain starch to mature gochujang using at least fifteen terms. Then add three words for tasting and three for packaging.

Questions before you go / 出发前的小问题

When is the 2026 Sunchang Jangryu Festival?

VISITKOREA lists the 2026 festival for October 15–18 around Sunchang Gochujang Village and the Fermentation Theme Park. Check the current notice before travel.

Is all gochujang made exactly the same way?

No. Grain choice, soybean material, sweetness, salt, fermentation method and maturation period can differ among producers.

Can I safely ferment gochujang just by copying a short tourist demonstration?

A visitor workshop is not necessarily a complete food-safety protocol. Use a verified recipe or supervised method with appropriate hygiene and process controls.
